6:02 FIRST ALERT FORECAST ON THE 2'S-WX WALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

We'll wrap up the month of September on a high note in the weather department as bright, sunny skies dominate yet another day.

With that said, we'll still keep a chance of rain in the forecast as a few isolated showers develop during the afternoon and evening, but the rain shouldn't cover a whole lot of ground.

Here's how our Sunday should set up: the first part of the day will pretty much stay rain free; our sky will stay nice and sunny with temperatures starting in the 70s and warming to near 90 by midday. By the middle of the afternoon and through the evening, a few pockets of heavy rain and storms will develop, but the chance of any one spot getting hit by rain will be around 30%. We're just not expecting a whole lot of rain today with our atmosphere staying somewhat stable and tranquil.

Like last night, a few storms may linger past sunset, especially for locations deeper inland. Otherwise, look for a few clouds to hang around overnight with temperatures cooling to the mid 70s.

We'll start to notice some changes in our weather by Monday as a weather system approaches from the northwest. Ahead of this weather system, an onshore flow will develop across Southwest Florida, which will usher in a decent amount of tropical moisture. While we don't expect a complete washout from this weather pattern, we do expect to see more cloud cover along with a better chance of rain, not just for Wednesday but also for most of the upcoming week.

One thing to prepare for during the first half of the week is the potential for an earlier start to the rain, which we often see with our winds coming off the Gulf. Some mid to late morning shower activity will be possible Monday through Wednesday, but the good news for those with outdoor afternoon plans is the bulk of the afternoon and evening rain will get pushed deeper inland.

By Thursday, we'll get back to seeing our afternoon showers and storms, which should be fairly numerous considering all the moisture we'll have around the area. Higher than normal rain chances look to continue through the end of the upcoming week and into next weekend as well. Return to index of stories...

6:32 FIRST ALERT FORECAST ON THE 2'S-WX WALL

"People love meat."

MEAT HAS PRIDE OF PLACE AT JAMIE STACHOWSKI'S BUTCHER SHOP IN WASHINGTON.

"What can I get for you, my friend?"

HAM.PASTRAMI.STEAK.IT'S ALL HERE.

"We're a meat eating country and no matter what, people are going to find a way to get meat."

BUT WITH PRICES FOR PORK AND BEEF EXPECTED TO RISE NEXT YEAR.

THIS LONG-TIME MEAT MAN SAYS CONSUMERS WILL HAVE TO PAY MORE -- OR GET USED TO NEW CUTS.

"What happened in the last increase is people went from eating a lot of primals to NY strips, the porterhouses - they went to eating secondary cuts."

"Everybody loves bacon."

THE COMING STICKER SHOCK WILL IMPACT NOT JUST BUTCHERS BUT RESTAURANTS AND DINNER TABLES ACROSS THE COUNTRY.

"THE WORST DROUGHT IN DECADES MEANS HIGHER COSTS FOR ANIMAL FEED AND LOWER PROFITS FOR FARMERS. FARMS LIKE THIS ONE HERE IN MARYLAND HAVE ALREADY HAD TO RAISE PRICES TO KEEP UP. "

"What you doing, honey?"

JULIE GRAY STINAR RUNS A SMALL FARM NEAR THE WEST VIRGINIA BORDER.

WHERE SHE RAISES HENS, HOGS AND CATTLE.

A THIRD OF HER COSTS GOES TO ANIMAL FEED -- WHICH IS MOSTLY CORN AND SOY.

PRICES FOR CHICKEN AND PIG FEED HAVE SKY-ROCKETED SINCE JULY.

Stinar: It was $14.77 on July 2nd. Now it's $16.79 so it's gone up by two dollars in two months.

Athena: That's fair-- a significant amount.

Stinar: And so then here we have the pig pellet was 12.22 and now the pig pellet is 15.06.

Athena: So it's gonna get worse?

Stinar: Oh it'll get a lot worse.

SHE'S NOW CHARGING A DOLLAR A POUND MORE FOR HER SAUSAGE, PORK CHOPS AND BACON AND PLANS TO SWITCH FROM CORN-BASED HOG FEED TO SORGHUM TO SAVE MONEY.

"It's requiring a lot more creativity. You have to be really good at adapting."

SINCE SHE DOESN'T RAISE BROILER CHICKENS -- THE KIND YOU EAT -- IN WINTER, STINAR IS HOPING TO AVOID THE WORST OF THE PRICE SPIKE FOR THEIR FEED.

AND UNLIKE MOST AMERICAN FARMERS, SHE GRASS FEEDS HER CATTLE -- MEANING SHE WON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT GRAIN PRICES FOR THEM.

BACK IN WASHINGTON, STACHOWSKI'S CUSTOMERS ARE PREPARING THEMSELVES.

"The quality is worth it. I don't mind spending the money."

"There is a limit to what any person would pay."

ONE TONGUE-IN-CHEEK SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM.

"Eat more tofu."

THEN AGAIN - TOFU IS MADE OF SOY.
