This is all pushing in due to two systems I've been talking about for days now. First is a low pressure swinging through the Deep South, and it's giving them several inches of rain. CAPE CORAL'S FIRE CHIEF IS ASKING CITY LEADERS FOR MORE THAN A MILLION DOLLARS TO EXPAND THE EMERGENCY OPERATION CENTER--

NBC-2'S ALEX BOYER REPORTS. Return to index of stories...

CAPE EOC EXPANSION PROPOSAL-PKG-BNR

This is where Ellen seeley spends her day - working out of a pantry inside the city's emergency operations center. And she's not alone.

-bill van helden/cape coral fire chief-"we have some of our staff that are in spaces that weren't designed to be office space. One person is in a former closet. We have other members congregating into one large setting.

Cape coral fire chief bill van helden is asking council for an estimated $1.2 million dollars in order to expand the existing E-O-C. Adding about 4-thousand square feet to the rear of the building.

-van helden-"were going to be able to add offices to the EOC."

The money would come from the "all hazards fund."

-rana erberick/cape councilwoman-"this is probably a very good use of these funds."

Cape coral fire union president brendan fonock agrees.

-brendan fonock/cape coral fire union-"this isn't money that's coming out of the general fund that would go towards operating fire trucks or personnel."

Which is why the money *cant be used to address dwindling response times.

Last month chief van helden cautioned against *increasing response times - due to budget constraints. This year, the cape coral fire department responded to just 37-percent of all calls in 5-minutes or less.

So while the chief looks for a financial fix to help stablize response times, the fire union supports funding the expansion of the E-O-C.

-fonock-"its still tax dollars but still something that's needed to run the administration.

Getting fire personnel - like seeley - out of the food pantry and into an office of her own.
