IT'S NOT JUST HAPPENING IN FLORIDA. FIVE OTHER BATTLEGROUND STATES INCLUDING NORTH CAROLINA, COLORADO, NEVADA AND VIRGINIA HAD PROBLEMS AFTER THE REPUBLICANS PAID THE CORPORATION NEARLY $3-MILLION DOLLARS TO REGISTER VOTERS.

We got a voter registration application, and when we sent the card to him, his mother called back said ' well it couldn't have been him, he's in prison.' so i don't know where they did the voter registration drive but usually prison's not a good place to do it.

SHARON HARRINGTON// 02:32:16 They start getting lazy - the workers - and want to meet a certain quota and so they start doing all these on their own. 02:32:21

WORKERS GOT PAID BY THE NUMBER OF REGISTRATIONS TURNED IN.

AND THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF THESE QUESTIONABLE FORMS IN FLORIDA; ALL TURNED OVER TO F-D-L-E FOR INVESTIGATION.

A quiet lake

Nats

Is stirring up the caloosahatche river.

Take sound

"snook like running water, that's usually when they hit."

A billion gallons flows everyday from lake o into the Caloosahatchee. The release has been happening since September 19th-when the army corps of engineers decided the water levels were getting too high. It's a tough decision, knowing that too much fresh water can hurt marine life in local estuaries.

Take sound

Kurt Harclerode

"they're walking a tight rope saying we want to keep as much water in the lake so we're not blowing out the estuaries either on the east coast or west coast, but we need to have some room, some storage room within the lake in case that storm comes in the next month."

The lake has had its levels go from

Just under 12.5 feet above sea level to now 15.64 feet above sea level in months, and if gets higher, it could eventually put too much stress on an aging dike. So while a release is a solution, it's also causing an unsettling environment for marine life in our estuaries.

Take sound

"right now we've gone from a saline system to a very fresh system to the point where some of the marine organisms that need more of the salt water can be affected by these conditions."

Kurt Harclerode says oysters are a becoming a concern, but nothing to panic about yet. But as long as the water keeps flowing, locals can count on finding their next big catch.

Take sound

" When the water is running, I'll be here once or twice a week." Return to index of stories...
