MENINGITIS OUTBREAK-VIDBOX

IN TENNESSEE, DOCTORS ARE CONCERNED ABOUT A RECENT OUTBREAK OF MENINGITIS.

SO FAR, 14 CASES HAVE BEEN REPORTED-

TWO PEOPLE HAVE DIED.

DOCTORS SAY THE OUTBREAK IS LINKED TO AN OUTPATIENT CLINIC THAT USED STEROID INJECTIONS TO TREAT PAIN.

NBC'S ERIKA EDWARDS PICKS UP OUR STORY. Return to index of stories...

MENINGITIS OUTBREAK-PKG

"This is st. thomas. checking on our patients"

THIS IS THE VOICEMAIL MESSAGE A PATIENT NAMED "LAURIE" RECEIVED -- AFTER GETTING A ROUTINE STEROID INJECTION TO TREAT HER CHRONIC PAIN.

"I have 2 bulging discs. They sit on a main nerve that runs through my leg. They wanted to go in and put this steroid in."

WHAT THE VOICEMAIL DID NOT ADDRESS -- WAS THAT LAURIE WAS ONE OF HUNDREDS WHO MAY HAVE BEEN GIVEN MEDICINE CONTAMINATED WITH A DEADLY FUNGUS CALLED as-puh-JILL-uhs.

IT APPEARS THAT FUNGUS HAS LEAD TO AN OUTBREAK OF A RARE FORM OF MENINGITIS AMONG PATIENTS AT THIS OUTPATIENT NEURO-SURGERY FACILITY IN TENNESSEE.

"This is an evolving situation, and the data and materials are being continuously reviewed."

WHAT INVESTIGATORS DO KNOW -- IS THAT THE CONTAMINATED STEROID CAME FROM A COMPOUNDING PHARMACY IN THE NORTHEASTERN PART OF THE U-S. AND WAS SENT TO A NUMBER OF PAIN CLINICS IN 23 STATES ACROSS THE COUNTRY.

OFFICIALS ARE NOT DIVULGING THE NAME OF THE PHARMACY OR WHICH CLINICS IN WHICH STATES ARE IMPACTED. BUT INFECTIOUS DISEASE EXPERTS AT THE EPICENTER OF THE OUTBREAK SAY THE SCOPE OF THE PROBLEM IS WIDE.

"Many patients have been exposed and they're all now in the process of being contacted, they're being informed and they're being told that if they have any kind of symptom they should immediately seek medical care."

THOSE SYMPTOMS INCLUDE SEVERE HEADACHES, NAUSEA, STIFF NECKS. SLURRED SPEECH. EVEN STROKES.

FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

The stream of tropical moisture that brought on and off rain Tuesday is still flowing through Southwest Florida, keeping a good chance for scattered showers and storms in our forecast.

Through the mid day hours, temperatures will warm into the lower 80s, as a bit more sunshine is filtering through the clouds. As the atmosphere heats up into the afternoon and highs reach the mid to upper 80s, more showers and storms will start to build and develop. Like yesterday, some of the rain will be heavy at times, and we'll even see thunderstorms in the mix, too.

A strong steering flow from south to north will keep the rain that develops moving northward pretty swiftly, and we'll continue to squeeze in lots of dry, sunny spells in between the passing downpours. Overall, our rain chances will be close to 60%, so most of us should expect to see rain at some point during the day.

A few showers will continue to roam into Southwest Florida this evening and tonight, and the air will stay quite mild and muggy once again. Low temperatures should only cool into the mid to upper 70s through the overnight into early Thursday morning.

Thursday will be the day we start to see improvements, but scattered showers and storms will still make an appearance. The change we'll notice is a trend away from the morning rain with the best chance of rain coming during the afternoon and evening. The rain coverage will also drop a bit, going from 60% today to 40% Thursday. We also expect to see more sunshine and as a result, temperatures will warm into the low 90s.

Friday will feature another round of scattered afternoon and evening rain, but the first half of the day will be sunny and mostly dry; afternoon highs will climb into the low 90s.

As we head into the upcoming weekend, expect a more normal weather pattern across Southwest Florida with morning sun, afternoon storms, and highs staying in the low 90s.

In the tropics, Nadine continues to bring tropical storm conditions to parts of the Azores and will more than likely become a post tropical cyclone by the end of the week and into the weekend. Tropical Depression #15 formed at 11am, but it's not expected to last too long, as atmospheric conditions will remain unfavorable. Return to index of stories...

FORECAST OPEN Return to index of stories...
