FORECAST OPEN
Return to index of stories...
Yesterday's official reading at Page Field was 69°. This marked the first time that temperatures dipped into the 60s since the middle of May.
Our hint of Autumn weather will continue once again this morning, as temperatures will be a few points lower. Along the urban corridor, expect a refreshing start to the day as numbers hover in the upper 60s, with a few middle 60s on the thermometer across our inland and northern cool spots.
Friday will dawn bright and sunny with the dry weather pattern prevailing as we round out the work week. Breezes will be out of the northeast between 10-15 mph with higher gusts and that will keep the slightly drier air pouring into Southwest Florida. Highs will eventually warm quickly into the upper 80s, however with lower humidity levels, our afternoon will feel quite comfy.
A few fair weather clouds will dot the sky late in the day, however with a dry and stable atmosphere rain prospects remain slim to none. Mostly clear skies along with lighter winds, will translate into another cool night as overnight lows range from the mid to upper 60s by morning.
A quiet weather pattern will stay in place through the weekend, with a few more clouds pushing in as an easterly flow develops by Sunday. This will bring an influx of some moisture across the Peninsula resulting in the chance for an afternoon stray/isolated shower. Otherwise much of next week, looks mainly dry and warm with highs in the upper 80s to near 90°.
THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

The Space Shuttle Endeavour is on its final journey. After 25 missions to
space, Endeavour is now on what they are calling "Mission 26".the trip
from LAX to its retirement home at the California Science Center. People
lined the route to catch the once in a lifetime sight.
SOT-MOS WOMAN 1: "This is the only time you're going to be able to see it
this time, this way, going down the street.
SOT-MOS WOMAN 2: "Coming along the boulevard it was just absolutely fabulous
SOT-MOS WOMAN 4 "I even watched it fly over the other day. Well this is
exciting; you can't beat this."
It's a complicated move, but also a surreal view. The Shuttle Endeavour --
used to soaring above the Earth at more than 17-thousand miles an hour, is
now reduced to crawling on a California highway at just 2 miles per hour. At
that leisurely pace, it's going to take two days for the five-story, 165,
000 pound shuttle to travel the 12 miles to reach its destination. Work
crews cut down hundreds of trees and dozens of power lines were to
accommodate the size of the spacecraft.
Marty Fabrick/project manager -
MOVING SOMETHING THE SIZE OF THE SPACE SHUTTLE WITH A 78 FOOT WINGSPAN
THROUGH THE CITY STREETS IS MAYBE NOT ROCKET SCIENCE BUT IT'S NOT TOO FAR
FROM IT.
Mark Kelly was Endeavour's last commander. He's says he's glad the shuttle
will have a west coast home.
Kelly: it is really nice to see it go into the California Science center
because they get a lot of people that go through there every year, millions
of visitors.
The Endeavour is being moving on a specialized carrier typically used to
haul oil rigs, bridges and heavy equipment. The wheels can spin in any
direction, an operator using a joystick can zigzag past any obstacles on
the street.

2:13 Spinal fusion is a surgery where we remove the disc material and we basically fuse, or we join two of the adjacent segment vertebrae together.
AMY OSHIER/REPORTING
RUNS:
Spinal fusion is a solid option, but not always a welcome one. Patients lose flexibility in their back and may face additional pressure on adjacent joints. But a new option is helping people beat back pain.
DR. DEAN LIN/NEUROSURGEON
RUNS:
3:39 Decades ago in orthopedics if you had a bad knee or a bad hip it got fused. That's currently what we do right now in the lumbar spine and it works well. Newer technologies are available to preserve motion in the lumbar and cervical spine and those are disc replacements.
SURGERY TO IMPLANT THE ARTIFICIAL DISC IS PERFORMED THROUGH THE FRONT OF THE BODY. DOCTORS REMOVE ANY DISC FRAGMENTS, THEN PULL APART THE SPINE AND PUT THE NEW JOINT IN PLACE. THERE ARE LIMITATIONS ON WHERE IT CAN BE USED, AND WHO CAN GET AN ARTIFICIAL DISC IMPLANT.
DR. DEAN LIN/NEUROSURGEON
RUNS:
5:20 There are a lot of patients who are interested in the replacement as opposed to fusion. 6:16 Right now, it's only FDA approved for one level.
STILL IT'S A FIRST STEP IN TAKING ON TROUBLESOME BACK PAIN. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER.

"Ben was not only running but he was passing other contestants. He was doing
really well and we were watching him for a second. All of a sudden, his
prosthetic failed and he fell flat on his face," said PFC. Matthew Morgan.
"By the time we ran over there he'd already jumped up and tried to fix it
while continuing the race,"
BEN REALIZED HE COULD NOT FINISH THE RACE ON HIS OWN -- SO THE MARINES PICKED HIM UP, AND RAN WITH HIM FOR THE REST OF THE RACE.
THEY WERE ALL CHEERED ON AS THEY CROSSED THE FINISH LINE.
