Today's Weather Story
THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
Sunshine will be prevalent through our Monday, but enough moisture will still be around to spark a few hit or miss afternoon showers. The chance of getting hit by a shower today will be close to 30%, and the rain that manages to develop will stay pretty isolated and widely spaced.
Despite the rain chance today, most of us will enjoy warm sunshine and clear skies through the morning and then a mix of sun and clouds during the afternoon. Temperatures will start in the low 70s and warm into the upper 80s through the second half of the day.
Winds won't be as blustery as the last couple days. The wind direction will still be predominantly out of the northeast, but wind speeds should stay between 5-10 mph instead of gusting up to 20-25 mph like Saturday and Sunday.
By Tuesday we expect to get another little dose of dry air, which will work to keep our weather dry and fairly pleasant. We'll notice a slight dip in humidity, too, which will make the air feel a little more comfortable. We may even see a few spots cooling off into the upper 60s Wednesday and Thursday morning, but it's doubtful these 60s will be as widespread as what we had last week.
The next little wrinkle to mention in the forecast for Wednesday is the potential for a little more cloud cover and some light scattered showers in association with a little weather system that will swing in from the west. Our rain chance shouldn't be too high, but we'll likely be tracking a few showers through the day. Another side effect of this system will be slightly lower temperatures as highs only warm into the mid 80s.
It looks like we'll have to keep the rain chance in our forecast from Thursday through the weekend as a cool front attempts to slowly move down the peninsula. There's still some uncertainty in terms of how far south the front will be able to advance. If the front stalls out over us and loses steam, a noticeable cool down and drop in humidity won't be as likely. We'll just have to keep tracking this front through the week and keep tweaking the forecast accordingly.

AN AUSTRIAN MAN JUMPS FROM MORE THAN 24-MILES IN THE SKY, FALLING FOR MORE THAN FOUR MINUTES AND REACHING SPEEDS OF MORE THAN 700 MILES PER HOUR.

REPORTER BRIAN TODD SHOWS YOU.

WITH A HEART-POUNDING HOP INTO THE STRATOSPHERE, FELIX BAUMGARTNER MAKES HISTORY.
HE JUMPS FROM 128-THOUSAND FEET ABOVE THE EARTH -- 24-MILES UP; HIGHER THAN ANYONE BEFORE HIM.
DURING FREE-FALL, HE SPUN FOR A FEW HARROWING MOMENTS BUT STABILIZED QUICKLY.
"Starting spinning so violent. It spun me around in all different axes, you know, and I was always trying to figure out how to stop this. I was putting one arm out, it didn't work, then putting the other arm out, but you're always late, because at that speed. When you travel at that speed, with that suit , you don't feel the air at all."
IN THOSE FIRST SECONDS, HE BROKE ANOTHER RECORD: NO ONE HAD EVER GONE THROUGH THE SOUND BARRIER OUTSIDE A VEHICLE.
BAUMGARTNER REACHED A TOP SPEED OF MORE THAN 700 MILES AN HOUR -- WELL PAST THE SPEED OF SOUND.
FREE-FALL LASTED FOUR-MINUTES-19-SECONDS BEFORE HIS PARACHUTE OPENED.
THAT'S SHORT OF THE RECORD FOR THE LONGEST FREE-FALL IN HISTORY, BUT AFTER HE SAFELY TOUCHED DOWN, THE MAN KNOWN AS 'FEARLESS FELIX' WAS HAILED AS AN AEROSPACE PIONEER.
"It's hard to realize what happened right now, because there's still so many emotions. I had tears in my eyes when I was coming back a couple of times, because you're sitting there and you thought about that moment so many times -- how it would feel and what it would look like -- and this is way bigger than I had anticipated."
THIS MISSION HAD BEEN FIVE YEARS IN THE PLANNING.
IN BAUMGARTNER'S EAR DURING THE ASCENT: COLONEL JOE KITTINGER, THE MAN WHOSE RECORD BAUMGARTNER BROKE.
KITTINGER HAD JUMPED FROM 102-THOUSAND FEET IN 1960.
I INTERVIEWED BAUMGARTNER AND KITTINGER TOGETHER, EARLIER THIS YEAR.
"Are you jealous of Felix that he's going to break your record?"
"Oh, no. I'm delighted. I'm delighted he's going to do it. He's advancing science, and he'll do a great job."
MISSION LEADERS AND SPACE OFFICIALS HOPE THIS JUMP WILL SHOW THEM IF ASTRONAUTS, SPACE-TOURISTS, OR HIGH-ALTITUDE PILOTS CAN SURVIVE FOR ANY EXTENDED PERIOD OUTSIDE A VEHICLE IF THERE'S A MALFUNCTION.
IF IT HELD UP AS EXPECTED, BAUMGARTNER'S HIGH-PRESSURE SUIT COULD BE THE NEXT-GENERATION SUIT FOR FUTURE MISSIONS.
WHAT WILL FELIX BAUMGARTNER DO NEXT?
HE TOLD ME THAT AFTER THIS JUMP, HE WANTS TO PURSUE AN OCCUPATION AS A HELICOPTER RESCUE PILOT.
.MIGHT BE A BIT OF A LET-DOWN.

Weather Trends
