DECISION 2012 - 22 DAYS UNTIL THE NOVEMBER ELECTION.
LOOKING LIVE AT THE SITE OF TONIGHT'S DEBATE AT HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY IN NEW YORK.
PRESIDENT OBAMA AND MITT ROMNEY WILL FACE-OFF IN THEIR SECOND DEBATE.
A VICTORY FOR EITHER CANDIDATE COULD CREATE A SENSE OF MOMENTUM THAT COULD BE TOUGH TO STOP BEFORE ELECTION DAY.
NBC'S CHUCK TODD REPORTS.
Return to index of stories...
It's Round 2 for President Obama and Mitt Romney. squaring off in tonight's town hall debate.
Both spent Monday hidden from the media as they finished up their debate preparations: Mr. Obama in Williamsburg, Virginia. Romney near his home in Massachusetts.
Campaigning in Pennsylvania, Ann Romney said her husband is ready for tonight.
SOT:
15:49:44
MITT'S PREPARED, MITT'S UM, CONFIDENT, MITT'S GOT A GOOD PRESENCE ABOUT HIM, AND MITT'S RUNNING BECAUSE HE BELIEVES IN AMERICA.
In a debate that will tackle both domestic and foreign policy issues, the president's handling of Libya and the security lapses are sure to come up.
Traveling in Peru Monday, Secretary Clinton did a series of interviews claiming what she called "full responsibility" for the security lapses in Benghazi, but to NBC NEWS, she made a plea to take politics out of the discussion:
SOT:
22:14:35
I DON'T THINK WE WANT TO GET INTO ANY BLAME GAME. I THINK WHAT WE WANT TO DO IS GET TO THE BOTTOM OF WHAT HAPPENED.
Clinton also weighed in on the stakes for her boss in tonight's debate:
SOT:
I THINK HE WILL DO FINE. I THINK HE JUST HAS TO GET OUT THERE AND TALK ABOUT WHAT HE'S DONE FOR THE COUNTRY AND WHAT HE WANTS TO DO FOR THE NEXT 4 YEARS.
Tonight's town hall format comes with risks and rewards for both candidates.
For Mr. Obama, it's a chance to bolster his likability advantage over Romney -- and make up for lost ground after his widely panned performance in the first debate.
NATSOT - FIRST DEBATE
"YOU KNOW. FOUR YEARS AGO."
For Romney, who's done more town halls than the president this year, it's an opportunity to break the stereotype created by the Obama campaign that ROMNEY'S PRIVILEGED AND OUT of touch.
OVER THE WEEKEND, PAUL RYAN TRIED TO HELP BREAK THAT IMAGE FOR THE GOP TICKET WITH A photo-op at an Ohio soup kitchen. The charity's president IS NOW TELLING the Washington Post that volunteers let the campaign in without permission, and the dishes Ryan was washing were already clean.
In fact, town hall debates have proven in the past, it's not always what the candidates say that matters, but how they say it. You don't want to sound too cranky.
SOT:
YOU KNOW WHO VOTED FOR IT? YOU MIGHT NEVER KNOW. THAT ONE.
Or look disengaged.
And of course, body language can trump all of that.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
A dose of dry air will arrive in Southwest Florida today, keeping rain out of the forecast and lowering humidity a few notches by this afternoon.
The slight dip in humidity should make the air feel a little more comfortable as we progress through the afternoon and evening, which will also set the stage for a nice and quiet overnight period with clear skies and lows temperatures close to 70.
The drier air mass will work to keep our sky mainly sunny through our Tuesday, and even with all the sunshine in place, temperatures should stay below 90 with most spots warming into the mid to upper 80s.
Our wind flow will primarily be out of the north and northeast today from 5-10 mph, helping to guide some of that dry air into Southwest Florida.
The sunny, dry weather won't be locked in for long. Another disturbance will swing in Wednesday, ushering in more cloud cover and producing a few isolated showers. Most of Wednesday showers should be inland, but a few coastal showers can't be ruled out either. The cloud cover will help to limit daytime heating tomorrow, so look for highs to only warm into the mid 80s.
The cloud cover and rain will fade Thursday as dry air takes control of the area once again. Look for lots of sunshine with highs in the upper 80s and very slim rain chances.
Friday should be a repeat performance of Thursday as our sky stays mostly sunny and rain free, but a weakening front will attempt to settle into Southwest Florida Saturday, which should manage to spark some isolated showers.
Earlier in the week, it looked as through this weekend's cool front could bring us a nice dip in temperatures and humidity, but models now suggest the front will be too weak to give us much of a change in those categories. Instead, it appears our temperatures will stay close to average through the weekend with highs reaching the upper 80s and lows falling to the low 70s. Rain chances should continue to stay relatively low, though, with rain coverage only near 20-30% both Saturday and Sunday.

BRING HOME A NEW BABY AND YOU BRING HOME A HOUSE FULL OF NEW EQUIPMENT. PRODUCTS PARENTS PRESUME ARE SAFE TO USE.
"One of the most serious challenges there are products that may appear to give parents a false sense of security."
DAVID BUTLER IS DEPUTY DIRECTOR FOR CONSUMERS UNION IN WASHINGTON D.C.
C-U SAYS PRODUCTS ARE DESIGNED AND SOLD, AND ONLY AFTER BEING USED BY CHILDREN DO SOME SAFETY PROBLEMS SURFACE.
"That's always the challenge is making sure that those products are the very safest that they can be and when necessary trying to get these dangerous products off the store shelves but it is a very complex process that can take a while."
THE U.S. CONSUMER PRODUCT SAFETY COMMISSION IS IN CHARGE OF TRACKING INJURIES AND WORKING WITH MANUFACTURERS TO REDESIGN PRODUCTS AND SOMETIMES ISSUE A RECALL.
HERE AT THE C-P-S-C'S LAB. PRODUCTS ARE TESTED FOR SAFETY AND DANGEROUS DESIGNS DISCOVERED. FOR STARTERS, DROP SIDE CRIBS. MORE THAN ELEVEN MILLION HAVE BEEN RECALLED.
"It was specifically the drop side detached hazard and what happens the baby can get caught, feet first. get caught at the head and neck area and strangle."
32 BABIES HAVE DIED.
BEWARE OF SOFT BEDDING. THE C-P-S-C SAYS NEARLY HALF OF ALL CRIB DEATHS ARE FROM SUFFOCATION.
IT WARNS NEVER PUT PILLOWS, QUILTS, CUSHIONS OR EVEN BUMPERS IN THE BABY'S CRIB.
AND SLEEP POSITIONERS. THE CPSC SAYS DON'T USE THEM. THERE HAVE BEEN AT LEAST 12 DEATHS.
"Never want to use a sleep positioner, baby can turn to their side, get caught at the head area on the bolster and suffocate."
ANOTHER WORRY. BABY SLING CARRIERS. AT LEAST 14 DEATHS HAVE BEEN REPORTED.
"The commission is concerned about babies suffocating with the fabric against the nose and mouth or when the baby is in a curved position and gets caught chin to chest and can no longer breathe."
REPORTER: "How do you want parents to use these safely?"
CPSC: "Consumers should always make sure baby's head is exposed when using the sling carrier."
FALLS ALSO INJURE CHILDREN.
RECENTLY. BUMBO SEATS WERE RECALLED FOR A FIX.
21 SKULL FRACTURES WERE REPORTED AFTER BABIES FELL OUT OF SEATS PLACED ON ELEVATED SURFACES.
"You want to get the restraint strap and add it to your bumbo seat. A safer place is to always use the bumbo seat on the floor."
BABY BATH SEATS ARE ANOTHER PROBLEM.
THE SEAT CAN TIP OVER AND THE BABY CAN SLIP THROUGH THE LEG OPENING AND DROWN.
REPORTER: "Baby walkers have been dangerous of stairs right?"
CPSC: "Stairs and falls being the number one injury there."
REPORTER: "They fall off."
CPSC: "Extremely dangerous and can be deadly. Here we have the newer style with the anti-skid device, it stops at the top of stairs."
"When you're setting up a house for a baby it's overwhelming the number of products being marketed to you and the essential things that you really do need that's why it's so important to do your homework to find out what you really need and what is considered safe."
