FORECAST OPEN
Return to index of stories...
THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
After a day of sunshine and comfortable humidity levels, moisture will return to Southwest Florida on our Wednesday.
Through the mid day hours, clouds will continue to thicken up across the area, keeping our skies mostly cloudy through the afternoon. This will keep our temperatures a bit lower compared to yesterday's high of 89°, while many of us top out in the middle 80s. A few scattered showers are possible as we head into the late afternoon/early evening hours, however the rain will not be widespread and any rain that develops will more than likely come to an end after sunset.
Tonight, clouds will linger across Southwest Florida with a couple of leftover showers as lows settle into the lower 70s by morning.
Thursday will offer more sunshine across the area as the clouds exit to the east and our atmosphere begins to dry out. Expect mostly sunny skies and a mainly dry weather pattern with highs closing in on the upper 80s. Partly sunny skies will continue through our Friday, but with just enough moisture an isolated shower or two can't be ruled out during the afternoon and early evening hours.
The remnants of a weak front will wash out across Southwest Florida on Saturday continuing the chance for a couple of showers and storms. High pressure building in across the southeast and mid Atlantic states will be in control of our weather through the early part of the week, with mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the middle to upper 80s as rain prospects remain next to none.

IT LOOKS AND SOUNDS LIKE ANY BEAUTY SALON.
"I really enjoy it, every day it's like I love doin' hair a little more, I've learned a whole lot."
"When I started out, I didn't know how to do anything."
BUT THIS IS NO ORDINARY BEAUTY SCHOOL. CASEY FORWARD IS SERVING TIME FOR SECOND DEGREE MURDER. KEOSHA CURRIE IS DOING 3 TO 5 FOR ASSAULT. ALL THESE STUDENT STYLISTS ARE INMATES AT THE LARGEST WOMEN'S PRISON IN NORTH CAROLINA.
HERE AT THE PRISON, THESE INMATES TAKE THE SAME TWO YEAR, 15-HUNDRED HOUR COSMETOLOGY PROGRAM THEY TEACH AT THE LOCAL COMMUNITY COLLEGE.
"We get to serve the inmate population as well as we have staff coming in and they get services as well. "
THEY DON'T PAY TUITION, OR GET PAID FOR THEIR WORK. BUT WHAT THEY DO GET IS A VALUABLE SKILL SET.
"Seeing 'em leave happy, it makes you feel good that they feel better about themselves, more of a woman."
64 PERCENT OF THE WOMEN BEHIND BARS HAVE NOT FINISHED HIGH SCHOOL. 50-PERCENT WERE UNEMPLOYED IN THE MONTH BEFORE THEIR ARREST. IF THEY LEAVE THE PRISON WITHOUT ANY NEW TRAINING, ANY NEW SKILLS, 58 PERCENT WILL BE BACK BEHIND BARS WITHIN THREE YEARS.
"If we give them the tools that they need to be successful on the outside then that's what the whole purpose of the program is."
PRISONS IN OREGON, MICHIGAN, MISSIOURI AND HERE IN NORTH CAROLINA ARE LEADING THE WAY IN EDUCATING INMATES, WORKING TOWARD A SECOND CHANCE.
"I want to own a salon when I get out. Think you can do it? Yes, maam I can do anything I put my mind to."
WORKING TOWARDS A NEW LIFE, ONE STYLE AT A TIME.

"Hello Mr. Yakamotto. Welcome back to the gap. How'd those assorted tank tops work out for you? Mr. Yakamotto?"
MINORITY REPORT WASN'T TOO FAR OFF.
A NEW APP COULD SOON START SENDING YOU DEALS TO YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANTS AND STORES -- JUST BY SCANNING YOUR FACE.
IT'S CALLED FACEDEALS.
HERE'S HOW IT WORKS -- WHEN USERS OF THE APP WALK INTO A STORE, A CAMERA SCANS THEIR FACE.
FACIAL RECOGNITION SOFTWARE THEN MATCHES THAT SCAN WITH THE PERSON'S FACEBOOK PROFILE.
AND A COUPON GETS SENT TO THAT PERSON'S SMARTPHONE, BASED ON THEIR ONLINE INTERESTS.
People are checking in using Facebook and foursquare already. We're just making it more intuitive for them to check in.
TIM MCMULLEN IS THE CEO OF RED PEPPER -- THE COMPANY DEVELOPING THE FACEDEAL APP.
the platform's being developed to being as secure as any other platform you'd give information to.
SECURITY MEASURES INCLUDE:
-THE USES OF A "DOUBLE-OPT-IN" SYSTEM. MEANING YOU HAVE TO CONFIRM YOUR CONSENT A MULTIPLE TIMES
- AND *YOU* GRANT THE APPLICATION ACCESS TO YOUR FACEBOOK PROFILE
STILL WE WANTED TO KNOW WHAT PEOPLE THOUGHT OF THE FACE SCANNING DEAL-MAKER.
"It's not something I'd opt into and even if I were to, it's not something I'd want to get out of the blue. It's an invasion of privacy more so than anything else."
"That's what Facebook is for. It's for people to know. It's the social network. So, I've got it there for a reason. Evidently I've got it there for people to know. I think I would enjoy that very much."
"I think that's way too high tech for someone like me. I think if it was printed somewhere or email, I might print it out and take it with me. But if it's something scanning my face, I might be a little intimidated and walk away."

WHILE MAMMOGRAMS REMAIN THE GOLD STANDARD IN BREAST CANCER SCREENING, THERE ARE CONCERNS WOMEN WITH DENSE BREAST TISSUE MAY HAVE THEIR CANCER PICKED UP LATER.
BUT A NEW FDA APPROVED TECHNOLOGY MAY CHANGE THAT. AMY OSHIER REPORTS IN TODAYS HEALTH MATTERS.

UP TO 40% OF WOMEN HAVE DENSE BREAST TISSUE AND THERE IS A GROWING CONCERN IT MAY BE HARDER FOR THEM TO DETECT GROWING CANCERS WITH A TRADITIONAL MAMMOGRAM.
DR. GAIL SANTUCCI/DIAGNOSTIC RADIOLOGIST
RUNS:
10:56: What we are talking about is the ratio of fatty and fibro glandular elements within a particular patients breasts.
FOUR BASIC CATEGORIES CLASSIFY BREAST TISSUE:
DR. GAIL SANTUCCI/DIAGNOSTIC RADIOLOGIST
RUNS:
11:20: The main one is Mostly Fatty tissue, which is very easy to see a small lesion on mammography. Then there are people with Scattered Fibroglandular density, who have some density but there still is a lot fatty tissues. Then you move on to Heterogeneously Dense meaning that they have a lot of glandular tissue and then the final density category is Predominantly Fibroglandular.
HERE'S WHAT DOCTORS ARE FACING.
RUNS:
01:43: This patient has what we would describe as extremely dense breast tissue and the difference should be fairly readily apparent.
IN THIS MAMMOGRAM, GLANDULAR ELEMENTS MAKE UP MOST OF THE BREAST TISSUE, MAKING IT HARD TO SPOT SMALL LESIONS.
DR. GAIL SANTUCCI/DIAGNOSTIC RADIOLOGIST
RUNS
16:35 You might not be able to see something until it is bigger and can show through that dense breast tissue.
AMY OSHIER/REPORTING
RUNS:
Studies show adding ultrasound in women with dense breast tissue increases the likelihood of finding early cancer. Now the FDA approved a new, automated technology which scans the entire breast.
THE 'AUTOMATED BREAST ULTRASOUND' PROVIDES 3D IMAGES THAT CAN SEE THROUGH DENSE TISSUE.
DR. GAIL SANTUCCI/DIAGNOSTIC RADIOLOGIST
RUNS:
14:48 It is significant because besides the mammography it's the only technology that's been FDA approved for screening. That does not unfortunately mean your insurance will pay for it.
LACK OF INSURANCE COVERAGE AND LIMITED AVAILABILITY ARE OBSTACLES DURING THIS TRANSITIONAL PHASE.
DR. GAIL SANTUCCI/DIAGNOSTIC RADIOLOGIST
RUNS:
13:13 As we move forward, we'll be able to clarify what the best screening of women with different breast densities is.
THE GOAL IS TO FIND CANCER EARLY IN EVERYONE. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER.
