WINDS PICK UP

As we continue to track Tropical Storm Sandy in the Caribbean we will also see our winds increase here in Southwest Florida. For the next 2 days we will track a few clouds at times and very little rain shower activity on our side of the state. Some brief and fast-moving showers will try to ride over here from the east coast, but only a few will actually put down rain on our side of the state. Winds will be northeasterly tomorrow at 15 - 20 mph and gusty. Boaters should plan on the same kind of windy weather for the rest of the week. High temperatures will continue to top out in the upper 80's and overnight lows will be around 70 for several more days.

Tropical Storm Sandy is still on a northerly track and a hurricane warning is posted for Jamaica tomorrow. The storm should pass about 300 miles east of here on Friday/Saturday. This track should keep us on the drier side of the storm; however, a few showers are certainly possible these days. The bigger story will be the wind. We will see wind speeds come up to 20 - 30 mph by Friday with higher gusts possible. Return to index of stories...

Just two days after Michael g rippe parkway opened, we went out with

deputies today to see if drivers were obeying the speed limit. We were

in the car for no more than 30 seconds when the deputy clocked a driver

going 68 miles per hour. When a new road opens, The LCSO traffic unit

goes out to make sure people know the posted speed limits. Today, in

less than an hour, we caught three people who were speeding.

MEREDITH CRONIN AND ERINI BONOU-PRICE HAVE SOMETHING IN COMMON.

ERINI BONOU-PRICE/BREAST CANCER SURVIVOR

RUNS:

4:43 I'm a breast cancer survivor.

MEREDITH CRONIN/BREAST CANCER SURVIVOR

RUNS:

1:44 When they did the lumpectomy is when they found the cancer.

BOTH WOMEN HAD BREAST CANCER, BUT IT DOESN'T MEAN THEY HAD THE SAME CANCER.

DR. SCOTT DUNBAR/ONCOLOGIST

RUNS:

2:50: Something that's been known in the oncology arena is that breast cancer doesn't represent just one disease. There are other faces of it. Some of which behave better and worse then others and that the different ways that they are treated can sometimes be dramatically different.

THAT THEORY IS NOW BACKED UP BY A MASSIVE RESEARCH PROJECT CALLED THE CANCER GENOME ATLAS. THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF HEALTH RECENTLY FINISHED MAPPING ALL THE GENETIC VARIANCES IN BREAST CANCER.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

This huge genome project is taking breast cancer down to the molecular level. Understanding each cancer mutation will help doctors develop better treatments.

DR. SCOTT DUNBAR/ONCOLOGIST

RUNS:

2:50: Being able in the future to offer more tailored, individual care to a woman's cancer, based on the profile or its expression, personality, that the genes will tell us.

ALREADY, THE RESEARCH YIELDED ONE SURPRISE. THAT ONE OF THE MOST DEADLY FORMS OF BREAST CANCER, KNOWN AS TRIPLE NEGATIVE, IS GENETICALLY CLOSER TO OVARIAN CANCER THAN OTHER BREAST CANCERS.

DR. SCOTT DUNBAR/ONCOLOGIST

RUNS:

5:35: Which may allow of management and treatment with chemotherapy regimens which have been developed to treat ovarian cancer which has been a lot less toxic then some of the traditional breast cancer regimens.

SO THIS CELLULAR SUPER-SLEUTHING IS HELPING UNLOCK THE MYSTERY OF BREAST CANCER.

ERINI BONOU-PRICE/BREAST CANCER SURVIVOR

RUNS:

:13 I am the first person, from my mother's and my father's family to have any type of cancer.

MEREDITH CRONIN/BREAST CANCER SURVIVOR

RUNS:

IMPAC PROPERTY VOTE-OC

PLANS TO CHANGE THE ECONOMIC LANDSCAPE IN CHARLOTTE COUNTY CAME TO A SCREECHING HALT TODAY.

COMMISSIONERS DECIDED AGAINST INVESTING 3.1 MILLION DOLLARS IN A BUSINESS INCUBATOR.

NBC-2'S CHARLIE KEEGAN HAS REACTION FROM BOTH SIDES. Return to index of stories...

IMPAC PROPERTY VOTE-PKG

PACKED IN THE COMMISSION CHAMBERS WAITING TO SPEAK THEIR MINDS, RESIDENTS NEVER GOT THE CHANCE.

"This is just going to waste a lot of time, it's not going to pass." Commissioner Chris Constance, Charlotte County

GOING INTO TODAY'S MEETING, COMMISSIONERS WERE SPLIT ON THE IDEA OF SPENDING 3.1 MILLION DOLLARS TO PURCHASE THIS BUILDING AND TURN IT INTO A CENTER TO SUPPORT ENTERPENEURS AND BOOST THE ECONOMY.

"it's our jobs to weight the pros and cons and it's with sadness that I have to say that I've made that decision." Commissioner Tricia Duffy, charlotte county

TRICIA DUFFY WAS THE ONLY UNDECIDED COMMISSIONER, UNTIL SHE TOLD THE PUBLIC SHE WOULDN'T SUPPORT THE IDEA.

SHE SAYS ASPECTS OF THE PROJECT HAVE CHANGED PUTTING MORE RESPONSIBILITY IN THE HANDS OF THE COUNTY AND NOT PRIVATE PARTNERS.

"and I don't want the county running anything like that." Commissioner Tricia Duffy, charlotte county

SHE WASN'T ALONE, TAX PAYERS HAVE BEEN VOICING THEIR OPPOSITION TO THE PURCHASE AND SHOWED UP IN NUMBERS TODAY.

"the idea of a business incubator should also be private, and real estate needs to be private, the government needs to stay out of it." Dave Kesselring, charco resident

COMMISSIONERS STARR AND DUETSCH WERE AGAINST THE PLAN FROM THE START.

"there's absolutely no way I could have voted for this." Commissioner Stephen R. Deutsch, Charlotte County.

COMMISSIONER SKIDMORE POINTS OUT THE BOARD ASKED THE

COUNTY'S ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT TO BE BOLD AND COME UP WITH IDEAS LIKE THIS. NOW, HE WORRIES TODAY'S DECISION MIGHT HURT FUTURE PROPOSALS.

"what's happened is every time we vet something it seems some people can organize a group against it and we start to get on shaky ground and that's not fair to anyone." Commissioner Robert Skidmore, Charlotte County.

FORECAST-wxwall

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

HE AND HIS BEST FRIEND FROM THEIR U-DUB DAYS FOUND THERE WERE SO MANY EVENTS ON SOCIAL MEDIA - WITHOUT A WAY TO CELEBRATE.

We felt like that was a real market need that wasn't being served.

THEY DECIDED TO SERVE UP THEIR OWN CELEBRATION - INVENTING AN APP THAT HELPS YOU "TOAST" A FRIEND - IN REAL TIME.

Right here we have a bunch of upcoming events and birthdays?

IT MARRIES SOCIAL MEDIA LIKE FACEBOOK.

SHOWS YOUR FRIENDS, WHO'S GOT BIRTHDAYS, AND MORE

He needs a drink, so?

SHARING A COCKTAIL. UNCORKING AN EXPERIENCE

It tastes better when your best friend's paying for it.

THE APP IS CALLED "GRATAFY" - SINCE THE IDEA IS INSTANT GRATIFICATION.

We actually use it all the time.

IT OFFICIALLY LAUNCHES TOMORROW - WITH 40 RESTAURANTS IN WESTERN WASHINGTON.

THE SOFT LAUNCH HELPED MICHELLE STRUB SEND A FRIEND SOME WINE OVER THE WEEKEND.

We were having brunch and I was like, well, I can't go to your dinner tonight so we were having this brunch and I figured, I'm going to buy you a drink instead

A NEW WAY TO SEND A DRINK, RAISE A GLASS, AND A TOAST.

ONE COCKTAIL - AND CELL PHONE - AT A TIME.

We love being able to create those memories. We think Gratafy is basically an extension of that. Return to index of stories...

A MARYLAND MOM WANTS JUSTICE AFTER SHE SAYS HER DAUGHTER DIED FROM DRINKING HIGHLY CAFFEINATED ENERGY DRINKS.

NOW THE FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION IS INVESTIGATING FIVE OTHER DEATHS THAT COULD BE LINKED TO THE COMPANY - MONSTER.

AS NBC'S CHRIS CLACKUM REPORTS THE COMPANY IS FIRING BACK. Return to index of stories...

MONSTER DRINK DEATH-PKG

THE FDA'S DECISION TO INVESTIGATE MONSTER ENERGY DRINKS IS BASED PARTLY ON WHAT HAPPENED LAST DECEMBER TO WENDY CROSSLAND'S DAUGHTER.

"I visit the cemetery every day!"

14 YEAR OLD ANAIS FOURNIER WENT INTO A COMA AFTER DRINKING TWO LARGE CANS OF MONSTER ENERGY.AND DIED A FEW DAYS LATER.

SHE INGESTED IN ONE DAY AN AMOUNT OF CAFFEINE EQUIVALENT TO 14, 12 OUNCE CANS OF SODA.

THE OFFICIAL CAUSE OF DEATH.CARDIAC ARRHYTHMIA DUE TO CAFFEINE TOXICITY.

HER HEART CONDITION OF MITRAL VALVE PROLAPSE WAS NOT REFERENCED.

.BUT HEALTH EXPERTS ON TODAY SAID MIGHT MAKE HER AND OTHERS SUSCEPTIBLE TO TOO MUCH CAFFEINE.

"they haven't established a direct link but what we do know is that toxic levels of caffeine can cause pretty dangerous heart rhythm problems 5831

"if you are very young, very old, have heart conditions.if you take certain medications you have to be aware. So, you have to look for this information.so, always a good idea"

BUT FINDING THAT INFORMATION IS PART OF THE PROBLEM..ENERGY DRINKS AREN'T REGULATED.AND AREN'T REQUIRED TO POST CAFFEINE CONTENT OR WARNING LABELS.

"They need to be regulated. They regulate ice.they regulate bandaids"

LACK OF DISCLOSURE IS PARTLY BEHIND A WRONGFUL DEATH LAWSUIT ANAIS' FAMILY JUST BROUGHT AGAINST THE MONSTER BEVERAGE CORPORATION.

. WHICH SAID RECENTLY IT'S UNAWARE OF ANY FATALITY ANYWHERE THAT HAS BEEN CAUSED BY ITS DRINKS.

STILL, THE FDA IS LOOKING AT FIVE SUCH DEATHS OVER THE LAST THREE YEARS.ALL INVOLVING MONSTER ENERGY.

CHRIS CLACKUM, NBC NEWS. Return to index of stories...
