MARKETS WERE LITTLE CHANGED TODAY WITH THE DOW UP 26 POINTS.
STOCKS SEEM TO BE STUCK IN A RUT AS 3RD QUARTER CORPORATE EARNINGS HAVE DISAPPOINTED INVESTORS.
OUR WELLS FARGO ADVISOR NICK CHLUMSKY IS HERE TO TALK ABOUT THIS DOWNWARD TREND AND WHAT WE CAN EXPECT FOR THE END OF THE YEAR.
NICK?
Return to index of stories...
You know, I'm not really sure just how much of this little pullback in stocks is all about the results of this last quarter's corporate earnings. Remember, markets are prospective in nature. They tend to look out into the future 6 to 8 months and trade based on what will happen and how earnings will look.
Return to index of stories...
I think the reality is that investors have a whole lot on their minds right now. There's a whole lot of noise out there right now and in the world of technology that we live in today, where information travels at the speed of light, we are constantly bombarded by news. And there a quite a few notable things weighing heavily on investor's minds right now.
First, although some progress has been made with the EuroZone debt crisis, it appears European leaders have a long way to go and things could get worse there before they get better there.
Second, there's been a tremendous amount of anticipation and anxiety over the presidential election and at this point, it's anybody's guess who will win. And the mere uncertainty of this outcome has investors and the markets on edge.
Third, I think everyone's a little unnerved by the threat of the US going over the fiscal cliff if our leaders in Washington don't come to some compromises over legislation surrounding taxes and government spending.
So, I think the recent 5% pullback in stocks or the rut we're experiencing right now is more the result of uncertainties surrounding Europe, the election, and the Fiscal Cliff.
As for where stocks go from here…I personally believe that we will trade in a relatively narrow range leading up to the election and regardless of who wins, I think the market will begin to rally into the end of the year. I think investors are grasping for a little bit more certainty before they dive deeper into the market.
Warren Buffet kind of said the same thing this last week saying he thinks the economy will improve no matter whether President Obama or Mitt Romney wins. He cites an improving housing market and other positive economic indicators as boding well for the economy and thus markets going into 2013.
I think what it really boils down to is that investors are waiting to make large investments in anything, whether it be into their business, the stock market, etc. until they understand what the rules are in regard to taxes and deductions and what the business environment looks like moving forward into the future…and I think the environment will become much clearer as we approach the end of the year.
Return to index of stories...
Remember, there are trillions of dollars just waiting to come off the sidelines and we continue to find ourselves in a zero interest rate environment. That money has got to go somewhere. My guess is that we'll see both a Santa Claus rally and a good year for stocks in 2013.

DANTE CANO IS A BUSY 11-YEAR-OLD PLAYING SOCCER, HELPING CARE FOR HIS SPECIAL NEEDS SISTER.
That's the smile I'm looking for.
AND WHILE WATCHING A GIANTS GAME HE NOTICED PLAYERS WEARING PINK DURING BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH. DONTE FIGURED "WHAT ABOUT ALL OF THOSE PENALTY FLAGS THROWN DURING GAMES."
So why not make it pink so to raise awareness for breast cancer.
HE GOT OUT A PEN AND WROTE A LETTER.
HIS FAMILY IN MARLBORO, NEW JERSEY GOT A QUICK RESPONSE, YES THE LEAGUE WOULD DO IT. THEY WOULD CHANGE THE COLOR OF THE PENALTY FLAGS TO PINK AT THIS WEEK'S JETS GAME.
I'm in the car, it's like, 'Dude do you understand what's going on? This is so cool!'" said , "and he's in the car and he's reading his nook, and I'm, like, on the phone calling people!"
DANTE SAID WATCHING HIS 14-YEAR OLD SISTER HAS GIVEN HIM SO MUCH INSPIRATION. NIKKI SUFFERS FROM AICARDI SYNDROME, AND CAN'T WALK OR TALK.
"Well, I want her to be normal; to be able to do things she can't do now."
DANTE'S YOUNGER SISTER, DANIELLA, WAS DELIGHTED HER BROTHER IS BEING HONORED, BUT…
"I do feel jealous, he gets all the credit.there we go!"

IN HIS FINAL DAYS, IT WAS DIFFICULT FOR 93-YEAR-OLD FRANK TANABE TO SPEAK OR EVEN OPEN HIS EYES. YET HE WAS DETERMINED TO EXERCISE HIS RIGHT TO VOTE, FILLING OUT THE ABSENTEE BALLOT WITH THE HELP OF HIS DAUGHTER, FORMER KHON2 NEWS ANCHOR BARBARA TANABE.
He has never missed an election in his entire life and he wasn't going to let this one go either.
THAT WOULD BE HIS FINAL VOTE. TANABE PASSED AWAY PEACEFULLY AT HOME, SURROUNDED BY FAMILY. BUT HIS PATRIOTISM CONTINUES TO SERVE AS AN INSPIRATION
Well I thought, like a good soldier, you know, do his duty and he voted until the last minute.
GLEN ARAKAKI, SERVED IN THE MILITARY INTELLIGENCE SERVICE JUST LIKE TANABE. BOTH ATTENDED LAST YEAR'S CONGRESSIONAL GOLD MEDAL CEREMONY AT OUR NATION'S CAPITAL. ARAKAKI DOESN'T UNDERSTAND WHY TANABE'S VOTE IS TECHNICALLY INVALID.
Even though the law says shouldn't count, in this particular case, I think, it should count.
ACCORDING TO STATE LAW, IF A PERSON VOTES BY MAIL AND DIES BEFORE THE POLLS CLOSE ON NOVEMBER 6TH, THAT VOTE, WILL NOT COUNT. THAT APPLIES TO EVERYONE, INCLUDING THOSE DEPLOYED IN THE MILITARY.
My feeling is it should be just once you voted, that's it, unless there's some fraud involved.
REPRESENTATIVE KARL RHOADS, WHO'S ALSO VICE CHAIR OF THE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE, BELIEVES THE LAW SHOULD BE CHANGED, ESPECIALLY SINCE EXECUTING THE LAW WOULD BE VERY TOUGH.
Once you've already voted, it's very difficult to fish one ballot back out.
THE OFFICE OF ELECTIONS CONFIRMS, WHEN SOMEONE PASSES AWAY, THE CITY CLERK NEEDS TO RECEIVE A NOTIFICATION OF DEATH, THEN, FIND AND PULL THAT PERSON'S BALLOT, WHICH OFFICIALS SAY, IS LIKE FINDING A NEEDLE IN A HAYSTACK. STILL, TANABE'S FINAL ACT AS AN AMERICAN CITIZEN, COULD LEAVE BEHIND A VALUABLE LEGACY.
If this photo encourages more people to vote that would be the ultimate honor for my father.
