HELLO-2 SHOT PUSH-CLIP

GOOD MORNING AND WELCOME TO NBC-2 NEWS TODAY.

I'M JOE ROETZ,

AND I'M KELLY CRESWELL

TODAY IS SUNDAY, OCTOBER 28TH.

THE BIG STORY THIS MORNING --- A TSUNAMI WARNING IN HAWAII THAT FORCED EVACUATIONS, HAS NOW BEEN DOWNGRADED TO AN ADVISORY.

MORE ON THAT IN A MOMENT BUT FIRST --- MILLIONS OF EASTCOAST RESIDENTS ARE BEING URGED TO EVACUATE AHEAD OF HURRICANE SANDY.

WHICH COULD COME ASHORE TUESDAY SOMEWHERE NEAR DELAWARE.

LET'S GO STRAIGHT TO METEORLOGIST JASON DUNNING IN THE NBC-2 FIRST ALERT HURRICANE TRACKING CENTER, GOOD MORNING JASON. Return to index of stories...

WEATHER-WX CENTER

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

We're on the verge of seeing a refreshing cool spell across Southwest Florida as a batch of dry, chilly air gets wrapped around Hurricane Sandy and heads southward.

This dry, cool air will start sliding down the Florida peninsula today, keeping our highs for the day comfortably in the upper 70s and low 80s.

One thing we're not done with is the windy weather. Hurricane Sandy's massive field is expanding, and that will keep our winds coming in swiftly from the northwest from 15-25 with some gusts up to 25-30 mph.

Our sky should feature a nice supply of sunshine through the day with the exception of some fair-weather clouds coming in off the Gulf that will dot the sky at times.

By tonight, the winds will relax a little, but conditions will still be rather breezy. The northerly winds will help to pull down a nice surge of cool air into Southwest Florida tonight, allowing our overnight temperatures to cool into the upper 50s and low 60s!

Monday and Tuesday will be even cooler. High temperatures Monday will only manage to climb into the mid 70s, and Tuesday will be the coolest day of the week with highs in the low to mid 70s. Our lows will even get lower Monday night into Tuesday morning as temperatures across urban Southwest Florida cool into the low to mid 50s and while our inland communities potentially get down into the upper 40s and low 50s.

We begin a slow warming trend through the second half of the week as high temperatures start to climb into the low to mid 80s Thursday and Friday.

A weak cool front will attempt to slide through the area Thursday, which will likely produce a little more cloud cover along with a few light showers.

Enjoy the nice cool down! Return to index of stories...

TWO HIGH END BURGLARIES TAKE PLACE WITHIN TWO WEEKS OF EACH OTHER IN A GATED COMMUNITY, WITH MORE THAN HALF A MILLION DOLLARS IN JEWELRY STOLEN. CRIME STOPPERS-PKG

When a Fort Myers man slipped a wedding ring on his wife's finger in November 1965, he knew it was a keepsake item the couple would cherish for years. But now, an unknown thief has stolen that precious item - and replaced it with an unshakable sense of violation.

Victim #1 - "The scariness of knowing someone was in your home and you might have been right there and not knowing what the outcome of that might have been."

Two weeks ago, a couple in a south Lee County gated community came home after dinner with friends to find their house broken into, and nearly $500,000 in jewelry swiped from their second story bedroom.

Victim #1 - "You look at it and it takes five minutes for it to sink in and know what the story is. We were afraid to go in the rest of the house because we didn't know."

But that Friday night burglary wasn't the only episode. This past week, another house just a few blocks away was targeted - this time with a brand new $11,000 Breitling watch snagged, as well as a 4 carat engagement ring worth well over $50,000.

Victim #2 - "Everything else bothers me, too, but the worst part is somebody coming into the house."

Trish Routte: Despite the fact that both crimes occurred in a very well protected gated community, it just goes to show that no one is immune. Both victims think the crimes are related, with the suspects possibly being someone who may do contract work in the area, and knew which houses to hit - and when.

Victim #1 - "They seemed to know what was valuable. Because they didn't take my watches, which were right there. They didn't take lesser expensive jewelry."

In the first crime, the thief broke in through a lanai door, then had free reign into the unlocked sliding glass doors. In the second instance, the thief used a small tool to pry a side door open.

Victim #2 - "The door was loose - then I walked back to this door and I found that it was broken. Then I knew what happened."

Detectives are searching for any possible suspects, who may be trying to fence rare and very expensive jewelry items - including two Brietling watches, several Rolexes and a tennis bracelet valued at roughly $90,000.

Both victims say they're both tightening up security, but more important than anything, they want their jewelry back. They're also prepared to ensure they won't be targeted again.

Victim #2 - "All I'd have to say is they better never come back in my house again."

For Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers, I'm Trish Routte. Return to index of stories...

LANDFILL CONCERNS-SOTVO

Our other big concern is its quiet out here it's beautiful, you've been around a landfill how many thousand sea gulls do you see flying around and just what that would mean for us.

We submitted an extensive operating plan that detailed what will be done on a daily basis to ensure that odors and pests and those sorts of things will not have an impact on the surrounding properties.

THE ATTORNEY WITH CALUSA GREEN SAYS THEY WILL MEET WITH ANYONE WHO HAS CONCERNS ABOUT THE LANDFILL.

THE PROJECT HAS BEEN VOTED DOWN BY THE PUNTA GORDA ZONING COMMITTEE.

BUT THE COUNTY STILL HAS A SAY. Return to index of stories...

WE ALL KNOW BY NOW THAT EXERCISE DOES THE BODY GOOD, BUT IT IS ALSO THERAPEUTIC FOR PEOPLE WITH A CIRCULATORY CONDITION CALLED LYMPHODEMA. AMY OSHIER REPORTS IN TODAYS HEALTH MATTERS. Return to index of stories...

HEALTHBEAT-PKG

A BUILD-UP OF EXCESS FLUID IN THE ARMS AND LEGS, LYMPHEDEMA IS A COMMON SIDE AFFECT FOLLOWING CANCER SURGERY. WHEN LYMPH NODES ARE REMOVED, THE SYSTEM HAS FEWER PLACES TO DRAIN. THE RESULT CAN BE SWELLING, TIGHTNESS AND PAIN.

JACKIE SPEAS/LYMPHEDEMA THERAPIST

RUNS:

1:52 When it first starts it's mild and it can kind of come and go. As it progresses, it'll keep accumulating fluid over years and as it accumulates, it'll kind of harden and become fibrotic and then it's more severe.

TREATING LYMPHEDEMA BECOMES A MATTER OF MANAGEMENT. IT NEVER GOES AWAY, BUT IF DETECTED EARLY ENOUGH, YOU CAN SLOW THE RATE OF PROGRESSION.

JACKIE SPEAS/LYMPHEDEMA THERAPIST

RUNS:

2:53 We train people how to control it themselves so they know how to do all their self care.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

People with advanced or severe cases of lymphedema rely on compression wraps or custom garments to help squeeze and drain fluid. But therapists also teach patients who to use movement to their benefit.

JACKIE SPEAS/LYMPHEDEMA THERAPIST

RUNS:

5:30 We have them do an exercise program, because when they exercise with a compression on it helps to reduce it also.

EXERCISE IS MEANT TO BE THERAPEUTIC, NOT STRENUOUS. MOVEMENTS SHOULD BE SLOW AND MEASURED.

JACKIE SPEAS/LYMPHEDEMA THERAPIST

RUNS:

10:34 There are precautions with exercise. You cant just go and do an extreme exercise program. If you're not used to exercising, you have to gradually build up the intensity.

THERAPISTS ALSO TEACH MASSAGE TECHNIQUES TO IMPROVE CIRCULATION. IT PROVIDES PAIN AND SYMPTOM RELIEF, BENEFITS ALSO GAINED FROM EXERCISE.

JACKIE SPEAS/LYMPHEDEMA THERAPIST

RUNS:

10:47 People that exercise regular actually have less self reported problems with their lymphedema, so its actually very good.

USING SIMPLE, GENTLE MOTIONS TO GET YOUR BODY, AND IT'S FLUIDS, MOVING. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...
