TRACKING HURRICANE SANDY-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

SANDY CONTINUES TO IMPACT THE EAST COAST

Sandy is bringing a mixed bag of weather to much of the East Coast.

As she hones in on the Northeast, she's driving in a dry, cool air mass to south Florida. We're going to see overnight lows drop to 52 degrees, and some areas will be even cooler. Highs will only be in the low 70s during the daytime. As we progress through the week temperatures will gradually warm up, but they will stay fairly cool by our standards.

Mostly sunny skies will be the rule through the entire week, and we'll stay dry with the exception of Thursday. Isolated showers are possible on that day, but that's it! No more. In fact, the weekend looks spectacular. If you're heading to Taste of the Town - you're in for a delight.

Our weather is great, but that's not the case for our friends and family up north. Sandy is honing in on the Northeast very quickly.

It's nearing CAT 2 strength, too, with sustained winds of 90 MPH and gusts over 115.

Hurricane wind gusts are being felt 175 miles out from the center, and tropical storm force winds up are being detected nearly 500 miles out. Winds alone will cause damage across their region. Remember - leaves are still on the trees, and heavy rain will help weigh them down. Sustained winds over 50 MPH will easily bring them to the ground. This will result in widespread power outages.

Some 55 million people are going to be affected.

Besides the winds, storm surge is a major hazard. There's a full moon out which will cause the tides to be higher than normal. When you factor in Hurricane Sandy and her winds - storm surge will be up to 12 feet in some areas. Water levels are already higher than forecasted.

It's too late to evacuate if they haven't done so already.

Flooding due to heavy rains will be another concern. Also, blizzard conditions across the higher elevations of the Appalachians as Sandy pulls in some very cold air from the west.

It's a dynamic system that will be talked about for years to come. Return to index of stories...

QUESTIONED FROM THE BEGINNING, DETECTIVES HAD A HUNCH DAVID MCMANNIS AND PHIL BARR PLAYED A ROLE IN TARA SIDAROVICH's DEATH.

NEW EVIDENCE LINKED THE PAIR TO THE MUURDER AND NOW ONE SUSPECT IS BEHIND BARS.

STATE RESEARCHER DAN WOLF TESTS FOR A DIFFERENT PROBELM--

A DEADLY VIRUS CALLED NEWCASTLE DISEASE.

more than likely it's red tide, but we can never be sure and if we have a bird with neurologic signs it would be wrong not to test these

BOTH NEWCASTLE DISEASE AND RED TIDE TOXIN SHOW SIMILAR SYMPTOMS--

SO WOLF AND HOSPITAL DIRECTOR DOCTOR HEATHER BARRON TEAMED UP TO STUDY NEARLY 20 DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS.

they're acting drunk they're weaving maybe they're weak or down in the rear

MOST RECENTLY IN FLORIDA, THE DISEASE TURNED UP TWO YEARS AGO--IN BIRDS NEAR TAMPA AND ST. PETERSBURG.

IT RARELY AFFECTS HUMANS, BUT CAN WIPE OUT CHICKENS BY THE THOUSANDS--

AND BARRON SAYS, LEAD TO THE UNESSECARY EUTHANASIA OF WILDLIFE THAT COULD BE REHABBED.

it's really important that we not just euthanize them or panic and think oh my goodness this could be newcastles disease

WOLF SAYS TODAY'S TESTS WILL HELP HIM DETERMINE HOW THE DISEASE TURNS UP IN FLORIDA.

did they cause any Newcastle disease in the resident birds or is it already here?

THE ANSWER COULD SAVE CORMORANTS THAT ARE NOT INFECTED, AND HELP PROTECT THE POULTRY INDUSTRY FROM OUTBREAK.

FIREFIGHTERS- GEARING UP FOR BATTLE.

Andy Percival- 23:37 no water application til I say so. :39

A SCENE TOO FAMILIAR FOR THOMAS LAUZON OF CAPE CORAL.

Thomas Lauzon 54:35 you don't even know. it was bad. I mean, I think about it today and I still get choked up about it. :42

IN JANUARY-- THE MAINE HOME LAUZON PURCHASED FOR HIS DAUGHTER.

CAUGHT FIRE.

Thomas Lauzon 51:33 the whole west side of the house was all blown out. 3/4 of the house was all blown out. :39

BUT IT SURVIVED.

HE CREDITS THE 200-YEAR-OLD *LUMBER FROM WHICH THE HOME WAS BUILT.

Thomas Lauzon 53:46 I absolutely positively think the house was saved by the way it was constructed. :49

Captain Rusty Godette 44:55 they had true lumber. a lot of real wood. versus today a lot of manufactured wood like chipboard and stuff like that. :03

GOLDEN GATE FIRE CAPTAIN RUSTY GODETTE SAYS *NEW- SYNTHETIC MATERIAL USED TO BUILD AND FURNISH HOMES-- BURNS FASTER- AND HOTTER.

PUTTING NEW HOMES AT GREATER RISK.

Captain Rusty Godette 45:47 it's going to burn a lot hotter and it's going to be a lot darker vs. something that has more moisture in it. :57

THE NBC-2 INVESTIGATORS PUT THAT THEORY TO THE TEST-

PAIRING A SYNTHETIC COUCH AND A CORKBOARD COFFEE TABLE-- ALONGSIDE A STURDY- SOLID WOOD BOOKSHELF--

AND LIT THEM UP.

rusty Godette 31:49 right now the temperature is at 900. 700, 800. degrees on the couch. :59

MEASURING THE *HEAT ON EACH SURFACE AS THE FIRE SPREAD--

Andy Percival- 32:28 what temperature you got, Captain?:30 Highest temperature right now is 1,013. 1,013. :35

AND WATCHING THE BEHAVIOR OF THE BLAZE AS IT GREW.

Rusty Godette 30:46 see how the smoke coming out is dark? that's telling you the type of material inside-- KR- the darker the smoke, the more synthetic? Right. :56

THE SOLID WOOD STANDING UP THROUGH BILLOWING FLAMES.

Rusty 33:20 the wood is only about 600. 627- 640, 700. :28

Andy Percival 34:32 alright, hit it! :33

STANDUP 8:07 Turns out just living in Florida makes your home more susceptible to damage in a house fire. What's built to withstand hurricanes- also traps a lot of heat. :17

LAUZON FEARS THE FIRE THAT DAMAGED HIS HOME IN MAINE--

WOULD HAVE *DESTROYED HIS HOME IN THE CAPE.

Thomas Lauzon 53:37 I think it would have totalled the house. :39

WITH LITTLE CONTROL OVER *WHAT YOUR HOME IS MADE OF--
