TRACKING SANDY-WX ANIBOX

It's going to be another cool and crisp start across Southwest Florida with temperatures starting as low as the 40s across our inland communities and mid 50s through the urban corridor.

Temperatures will struggle to warm much past 70 this afternoon as a stiff, cool breeze continues from the north. Winds won't be quite as strong as yesterday, but we could easily see some gusts up to 20 mph.

Our sky will stay sunny and blue for most of the day as rain chances stay incredibly low with so much dry air in place.

Temperatures tonight will still be cool, but we don't expect to get quite as chilly as last night. Look for temperatures to dip into the low 50s inland and upper 50s to low 60s across the urban corridor.

Wednesday will be another dandy, but we'll likely have a few more patchy clouds around as our winds come off the Gulf. Daytime temperatures will rebound a little with highs expected to reach the upper 70s.

A weak cool front will slide through the area late Thursday, which could generate some isolated light showers along with some more cloud clover. Our rain chance, however, will only be around 30%.

Thursday's front should give us a nice reinforcing shot of cool, dry air, which will set things up perfectly for Friday and the upcoming weekend.

Pleasant, sunny days and cool nights will be in the cards for us from Friday through Sunday with highs comfortably in the low 80s and lows near 60. Return to index of stories...

VIOLENT WINDS AND RAGING FLOOD WATERS THAT TURNED DEADLY OVERNIGHT. MORE THAN 2 DOZEN PEOPLE DIED IN THE STORM. AND THERE'S FEAR TONIGHT THAT NUMBER COULD CLIMB.

HALLOWEEN IS TOMORROW --

BUT N-B-C 2 FOUND OUT SOME SOUTHWEST FLORIDA CHILDREN WON'T BE ALLOWED TO TRICK-OR-TREAT IN SEVERAL NEIGHBORHOODS.

MANY COMMUNITIES HAVE SET UP SYSTEMS TO KEEP CROWDS DOWN.

NBC2S GABY FLEISCHMAN JOINS US LIVE FROM INDIGO LAKES IN COLLIER COUNTY--

WHERE YOU'LL NEED A PASS TO GET IN TOMORROW NIGHT. Return to index of stories...

NEIGHBORHOOD TRICK OR TREAT-REM 26

indigo lakes is known to draw a huge crowd on halloween. Residents here are ready for tomorrow night-- decorations are up, they've stocked up on candy-- but they also needed to make sure they have passes to get in to the neighborhood. Return to index of stories...

NEIGHBORHOOD TRICK OR TREAT-PKG

In the past, the crowds of trick-or-treaters from around the county showing up at indigo lakes got out of hand-- with cars backing up at the front gate-- making for a traffic nightmare on collier blvd.

So the community decided to put some regulations in place-- only allowing residents and their guests to get in on halloween night.

Residents get two passes and one guest pass-- they are allowed to request more.

There are several other communities across southwest florida that are making trick-or-treating more exclusive-- setting up a similar pass system. Residents at stonybrook in lee county need to pre-register their guests.

The pass systems aim to make halloween safer and more enjoyable for families in the neighborhood.

Naomi leamon, indigo lakes resident

TEEN SEX SMARTPHONES-VO

NEW RESEARCH SUGGESTS TEENS WITH SMARTPHONES ARE MORE LIKELY TO BE INVOLVED IN RISKY SEXUAL BEHAVIOR.

THE U-C-L-A STUDY REVEALS ABOUT ONE-THIRD OF ADOLESCENTS USE SMARTPHONES.

THOSE TEENS WERE ONE AND A HALF TIMES MORE LIKELY THAN NON-SMARTPHONE USERS TO BE SEXUALLY ACTIVE.

SMARTPHONE USERS WERE ALSO TWICE AS LIKELY TO HAVE BEEN SOLICITED FOR SEX ONLINE.

RESEARCHERS SAY PARENTS SHOULD BE AWARE OF THESE RISKS AND TALK TO THEIR TEENS ABOUT BEING CAREFUL OF MEETING PEOPLE ONLINE. Return to index of stories...

MILLIONS OF AMERICANS UNDERGO JOINT REPLACEMENT SURGERY EACH YEAR.

THERE'S A LOT AT STAKE WHEN IT COMES TO PUTTING AN ARTIFICIAL IMPLANT INTO THE BODY.

NOWADAYS, PEOPLE MAY BE CONSIDERING 'DESIGNER JOINTS'.

IN YOUR HEALTH MATTERS - AMY OSHIER BREAKS DOWN WHAT YOU'RE GETTING. Return to index of stories...

IT'S A DECISION THAT'S GOING TO STAY WITH YOU. TODAY THERE ARE MORE CHOICES THAN EVER BEFORE WHEN IT COMES TO ARTIFICIAL JOINTS.

DR. ED HUMBER/ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON

RUNS:

:25 Such as custom knee replacements, robotic knee replacements, computer assisted knee replacement.

YOUNG PATIENTS IN THEIR 30s AND 40s WANT JOINTS THAT WILL LAST A LONG TIME. THAT MAY REST WITH NEWER MATERIALS.

DR. ED HUMBER/ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON

RUNS:

5:58 There's ceramic articulating surfaces that should not wear out as quickly but the risk of ceramics with the hip would be that ceramic is a glass material so there's risk for a fracture or a crack.

TYPICAL AGE OF KNEE OR HIP REPLACEMENT IS OVER 70. THOSE PATIENTS MIGHT BE WELL SERVED BY TRIED AND TRUE.

DR. ED HUMBER/ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON

RUNS:

5:58: Which would be a standard hip replacement, a metal ball and plastic liner.

9:59: Technology that we've had around for 25 or 30 years that I know in my heart is going to take that patient until they are 100 years old.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

Size matters when it comes to an artificial joint. Major manufacturers have sizes to fit almost everyone. Branded products are based on variations, for example: the Female Knee.

DR. ED HUMBERT/ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON

RUNS:

Joint Demo- Knee

The female knee is a narrowed femoral component- though that narrow component is actually needed for some men.

FOR ALL THE BUZZ ABOUT CUSTOM JOINTS, IT'S REALLY A CUSTOM FIT YOUR GETTING.

DR. ED HUMBERT

RUNS:

02:53 The implant itself is not the custom part. The guide that we get designed for that patient is the custom part of the knee.

SURGEONS SAY THE IMPLANT THAT WORKS BEST, IS THE ONE THAT'S PUT IN PROPERLY.

DR. ED HUMBERT/ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON

FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

IT RATES 45-HUNDRED HOSPITALS WITH A CLOSE LOOK AT PATIENT SURVIVAL RATES, LISTING HOSPITALS THAT PROVIDE THE BEST CARE FOR HEART ATTACKS, PNEUMONIA AND OTHER ILLNESSES.

IT'S EASY TO FIND A HOSPITAL'S RANKING.

"And so, doing that research in advance. and knowing where you're going to get your care really does mean the difference between life and death."

DR. ARCHELLE GEORGIOU IS AN EXPERT ADVISOR TO HEALTHGRADES. SHE SAYS IF YOU'RE TREATED AT A 5-STAR HOSPITAL, YOU HAS A 75 PERCENT LOWER CHANCE OF DEATH, AND A 61 PERCENT LOWER RATE OF COMPLICATIONS THAN AT A 1-STAR HOSPITAL.

"What was surprising to us - and pretty disappointing - was that people spend more time researching the next refrigerator they're going to buy or their mobile phone plan than they spend researching the doctor or hospital that's going to provide care,"

BUT THE CHIEF OF STAFF FOR ALVARADO HOSPITAL SAYS THE DATA DOESN'T ALWAYS TELL THE STORY.

"The problem with some of these things like HealthGrades and other ratings services is they often use. we'd call it hearsay or case report data, and it's not necessarily statistically valid." Return to index of stories...
