ALMOST UNBELIEVABLE --

Nat

A YOUNG CAT-

INTENTIONALLY SET ON FIRE.

56:43 "she was burned on her head and her back."

HER EARS AND HEAD ARE BADLY BURNED-

HER FUR- SINGED.

THE CAT WAS FOUND HIDING UNDER A CAR IN LEHIGH ACRES BY BROWN DIMAS.

2:13 "yeah, it was crying under the truck."

BUT FIRST HE AND HIS FAMILY NOTICED THE VERY SMALL FIRE IN THE FIELD ACROSS THE STREET ON PAISLEY AVENUE IN LEHIGH ACRES.

THEY CALLED 911-

AND FIREFIGHTERS PUT OUT THE FLAMES.

THEN, ATTENTION SHIFTED TO THE INJURED ANIMAL.

58:33 "if the infections had gotten bad- we could have lost her"

THE LEHIGH ACRES FIRE DEPARTMENT TELLS US THEY BELIEVE THE FIRE WAS INTENTIONALLY SET,

AND THAT SOMEONE LIT THE CAT ON FIRE.

YOU CAN SEE HER PAWS AREN'T BURNED-

AND THE FIRE MARSHAL TELLS US ALONG WITH THAT BEING AN INDICATOR-

HE SAYS THE CAT WOULD LIKELY HAVE BEEN ABLE TO GET AWAY FROM A FIRE THAT SMALL IF IT HAD BEEN ACCIDENTAL.

Nat

THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT THE KITTY NOW NAMED PAISLEY FOR THE STREET SHE WAS FOUND ON,

IS EXPECTED TO BE ALRIGHT, EVEN THOUGH HER ROAD TO RECOVERY WON'T BE AN EASY ONE.

SHE'S STILL ON ANTIBIOTICS AND OTHER MEDICATIONS.

we've been gardening here at the community garden since they opened it up four years ago.

WARREN JOHNSON HAS WATCHED HIS PLANTS GROW OVER THE YEARS AT LAKES PARK---

AND HE'S ALSO SEEN A LOT COME DOWN.

took the train ride last year and got all the way back there to see what they were doing with the marsh which was pretty well torn up by then.

WITH TALKS DATING BACK TO 2007, ACTION FINALLY TOOK PLACE IN FEBRUARY.

NATS

TRUCKS DUG UP ABOUT 40 ACRES OF LAKES PARK AND FILLED IN SOME DIRT TO CREATE A FILTER MARSH.

IT'S ALL PART OF A $2.3 MILLION DOLLAR WATER QUALITY PROJECT FUNDED BY THE SOUTH FLORIDA WATER MANAGEMENT DISTRICT, D-E-P, AND LEE COUNTY.

the county has planted 100,000 of these native plants to soak up the bad nutrients coming in from Hendry Creek to allow cleaner water to flow into Estero Bay.

part of it is going to impact tourism. I mean once we clean up the water, that's why the people keep coming to this part of the state so there are a lot of benefits out of this.

THE OTHER BENEFIT--THE COUNTY WON'T BE FACED WITH POTENTIAL FINES FROM THE STATE BECAUSE THE FILTER MARSH SHOULD START TO IMPROVE THE WATER QUALITY.

WITH CLEANER LAKES--

NATS

CONDITIONS FOR WILDLIFE WILL ALSO IMPROVE.

BACK AT THE GARDEN, WHILE WARREN WAITS FOR HIS PLANTS TO GROW, HE IS ALSO PLANNING TO CHECK OUT HOW THE COUNTY'S PLANTS ARE DOING.

NATS

i'll have to get another train ride out to look at it.

But not for long. John jacobson's days as the head of the cape coral redevelopment agency appear to be numbered.

But what about the rest of the CRA staff? Next wednesday council will *could decide to fire all 5-employees,

-erbrick-"what are the payouts for the various things, whether its eliminating the executive director. What are we obligated for?

Rent - for one thing. According to erbrick the CRA is locked into its lease until 2014. At a cost to taxpayers of $4,412 per month. That's not including other current costs.

-erbrick-"what are we going to do with current contracts out there? Consultants?

Councilman chris chulakes leetz didn't support disbanding the CRA board at last monday's meeting. He says there's a chance council could vote to reverse their original decision - keeping CRA staffers - employed.

RICK RITTER/NEWS AT 5:00/19:02:36/ "Here on Bayshore and Weeks Avenue, there's always a lot of action with walkers and bicyclists trying to cross this road constantly. Many say there's almost an accident here every single day but are hoping that will all soon change, thanks to the new HAWK system--the first in Collier County."

WORKING RIGHT OFF OF BAYSHORE AVENUE, RACHAEL BACARDO KNOWS ALL ABOUT IT'S CROSSWALK PATH.

Rachael Bacardo/Mario's Hair Salon/19:01:05 "A lot of our customers that are walkers, do cross that intersection."

WITNESSING ACCIDENTS FIRST HAND.

Rachael/19:00:43 "Car wouldn't stop, car didn't see him, caught the wheel of a front tire and dragged him about 10 feet."

WITH HEAVY PEDESTRIAN AND BICYCLIST TRAFFIC, THE AREA'S BEEN MONITORED BY COUNTY OFFICIALS FOR YEARS.

Connie Deane/Collier County Growth Management Division/18:38:38 "They've done various things to try and bring it vehicular traffic's attention."

BUT NONE HAVE BEEN TOO SUCCESSFUL---FORCING THEM TO COME UP WITH BETTER WAYS TO MAKE THE INTERSECTION SAFER.

Neil Keane/Naples/18:53:38 "Almost impossible to walk across this street, you take your life into your hands when you do it."

WHICH IS WHY THE COUNTY TURNED TO THE "HAWK" SYSTEM. A HIGH INTENSITY ACTIVATED CROSSWALK THAT'S DESIGNED LIKE A TRAFFIC LIGHT---THAT HAS PEDESTRIANS PRESS A SIMPLE BUTTON.

THAT FLASHES STREET LIGHTS----FORCING DRIVERS TO STOP ON THE DIME.

Connie Deane/18:38:08 "It'll go to a flashing red to a steady red, which means peoples are supposed to stop."

THE SYSTEM WAS RECENTLY ACTIVATED THIS PAST WEEK, THE FIRST IN THE COUNTY AND ONE OF THE FEW ACROSS THE STATE.

Mike Gavin/Naples/18:42:10 "People have to listen to them now because they're very direct, they weren't as direct before."

ONE THAT LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT WILL BE KEEPING AN EYE ON--INCREASING PATROL IN THE AREA TO MAKE SURE DRIVERS ARE STOPPING.

Sgt. Robert Brown/CCSO Traffic & Safety Bureau/"Oh absolutely. Anytime we have something like that we usually watch it for a while."

Neil Keane/18:54:13 "I look forward to being able to walk across this street without being hit."

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

"A SPOOK-tacular Halloween night"

After morning lows bottomed out in the middle 50s, temperatures have rebounded nicely today into the middle and upper 70s. This coupled with low humidity and a light breeze out of the northwest have made for another pleasant afternoon across our part of the state with mostly sunny skies.

As we head into the evening hours, our skies will stay mostly clear with mainly dry conditions. Temperatures will begin to drop into the upper 60s around sunset, so as your ghosts and goblins are getting ready to head out for some treats there will be a very slight chill in the air. Overnight, temperatures won't be quite as cool as most locations along the coast and urban corridor will drop into the upper 50s to near 60° with spots deeper inland falling into the middle 50s.

A weak cold front will sag down the peninsula on Thursday keeping a mix of sun and clouds in the forecast with a slight chance for a few spotty showers during the afternoon and early evening. Temperatures will continue to run in the upper 70s to near 80°. While this front, won't bring another dose of colder air, it will reinforce the pleasant weather we've already been seeing.

As we head into Friday and the weekend, dry high pressure will clear things out and provide us with plenty of sunshine to fill our skies, along with a dry weather pattern that will hold across Southwest Florida. Expect temperatures to fall into the upper 50s to low 60s during the mornings with highs in the lower 80s during the afternoons. Return to index of stories...
