SANDY CLEANUP-PKG

IT'S BEEN THREE DAYS SINCE SUPERSTORM SANDY BORE DOWN ON THE EAST COAST, BUT THE RECOVERY IS JUST BEGINNING.

GOVERNOR CHRIS CRISTIE, OF HARD-HIT NEW JERSEY, IS ASKING FOR PATIENCE.

I'm paid to get things done for all of you but I need you to have patience as I'm trying to get all these things done.

CHRISTIE ACCOMPANIED PRESIDENT OBAMA ON A TOUR OF STORM DAMAGE YESTERDAY.

THE PRESIDENT SAID AMERICANS GO THROUGH TOUGH TIMES, BUT ALWAYS BOUNCE BACK.

My commitment to the people on this block, the people of this community, and the people of this state is that same spirit will carry over all the way through until our work is done.

IN NEW YORK, LIMITED SUBWAY SERVICE IS BEGINNING TODAY.

WITH FLOODED TUNNELS AND PACKED BUSSES, MANY COMMUTERS HAVE BEEN FORCED TO WALK OR BIKE INTO MANHATTAN.

We're going to get where we're going and figure it out one step at a time and hope for the best, that's all we can do.

GOVERNOR CUOMO DECLARED A TRANSPORTATION EMERGENCY, WAIVING FEES ON MASS TRANSIT UNTIL THE END OF THE WEEK.

THE STORM DAMAGE WAS SO EXTENSIVE AT NEW YORK'S BELLEVUE HOSPITAL THAT IT HAD TO BE SHUT DOWN, WITH NATIONAL GUARD TROOPS EVACUATING PATIENTS.

10-THOUSAND ARMY AIR AND NATIONAL GUARD TROOPS HAVE BEEN PUT ON DUTY ON 13 STATES.

THOSE LEFT WITH WATERLOGGED HOMES AND DAMAGED BUSINESSES ACROSS THE EASTERN SEABOARD SAY THEY'RE GETTING THROUGH DAY BY DAY.

I think I'm in survival mode, so I'm just going, I'm just doing one step at a time.

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

"A weak front brings slight changes for Thursday"

After several days of nice weather across our part of the state, a very weak front will bring some slight changes to our Thursday.

A weak cold front will sag down the peninsula this afternoon keeping a mix of sun and clouds in the forecast with a slight chance for a few spotty showers during the afternoon and early evening. Temperatures will continue to run in the upper 70s to near 80°. While this front, won't bring another dose of colder air, it will reinforce the pleasant weather we've already been seeing.

As we head into Friday and the weekend, dry high pressure will clear things out and provide us with plenty of sunshine to fill our skies, along with a dry weather pattern that will hold across Southwest Florida. Expect temperatures to fall into the upper 50s to low 60s during the mornings with highs in the lower 80s during the afternoons.

By early next week, we'll be tracking another cold front that will bring isolated showers to Southwest Florida followed by another nice refreshing push of Autumn air. Return to index of stories...

PANTHERS ESCAPE-PKG

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is tracking two

juvenile panthers after a tree knocked over by Sandy's winds broke the

enclosure housing the two cats.

Karen Parker, Public Information for FWC, said the two juvenile panthers, a

male and a female, were being housed at the White Oak Conservation Center.

Parker said when winds toppled a tree near the center it broke the enclosure

's fence, allowing the panthers to escape.

While the two are out of their pen, panther experts from FWC and the U.S.

Fish and Wildlife Service are tracking them using telemetry from radio

collars they are outfitted with, Parker said.

The panthers have not traveled far from their pen, and are still on White

Oak property. Parker said wildlife officials are continuously monitoring

their location and are working to return them to their enclosure.

Parker said FWC captured the two cats when they were five months old. They

were found in September 2011 near the Corkscrew Regional Ecosystem Watershed

in northern Collier County.

Kipp Frohlich, head of the Imperiled Species Management Section at the FWC,

said, "The two kittens, born in May 2011, were trapped by our staff due to

the death of their mother. They were transferred to White Oak Conservation

Center to be raised and prepared for release later this winter back to south

Florida where they were originally rescued."

The pens are secluded, Parker said, so the panthers can be raised while

still keeping their contact with people as minimal as possible.

Parker said five other panther kittens have been raised at White Oak. The

three females and two males raised at the center have been released in South

Florida.

Frohlich, speaking about the FWC's contract with White Oak to care for

panther kittens, said, "They are uniquely qualified to raise panthers in an

environment that maximizes their chances for a successful re-introduction

back into the wild."

Parker said scientists estimate there are between 100 and 160 adult and

subadult panthers in South Florida.: Return to index of stories...

WEATHER-WX WALL

YOUTH GAMBLING BUST-PKG

INFORMATION FROM WPLG'S WEBSITE:

Nine youth football coaches were arrested for allegedly betting on the same

games they coached.

According to the Broward Sheriff's Office, the arrests were the results of

an 18-month investigation called "Operation Dirty Play." Investigators said

coaches, team affiliates, and the president of the South Florida Youth

Football League, which has more than 7,000 players, routinely set point

spreads prior to each game.

Below are a list of charges against the nine men:

'B7'B7Brandon Bivins is

charged with Felony Bookmaking.

'B7Darren Brown is charged with Felony

Bookmaking.

'B7Vincent Gray is charged with Felony

Bookmaking.

'B7Brandon Lewis is charged with

Felony Bookmaking.

'B7Brad Parker is charged with

Felony Bookmaking.

'B7La Taurus Fort is charged with Felony

Bookmaking.

'B7Willie Tindal is charged with Felony

Bookmaking.

'B7Darron Bostic is charged with Felony

Bookmaking.

'B7Dave Small is charged with Felony Bookmaking.

Gray was arrested Tuesday. The other eight were arrested Monday.

Investigators said the coaches organized the bets and made the point spreads

on the games.

"They're organized, they banded together, and you know what, they're

operating a scheme," said BSO Lt. Frank Ballonte. "That's all it is. It's

organized crime at a lower level."

BSO also served search warrants at two businesses that, investigators say,

served as gambling houses: Showtime Sports and Apparel in Lauderdale Lakes

and Red Carpet Kutz Barbershop in Lauderhill.

According to investigators, Bivins was the ringleader and used his

barbershop in Lauderhill as a front for the gambling house.

"But he wasn't in it for the kids -- he was in it for the money. He even

went to the length of setting up a fake barber shop in the City of

Lauderhill that was really a bookmaking facility," said BSO Sheriff Al

Lamberti.

Six of the nine men are ex-convicts with previous felony arrests for drugs,

assault, and theft.

According to an ESPN "Outside the Lines" report, up to $20,000 was bet on

some games. Video in the report showed men exchanging cash in the stands, on

the sidelines, and at the entrance of games.

"From hundreds of dollars, ten dollars, till you hear thousands of dollars -

- $10,000, $20,000 -- you may hear on a football game," said Pompano Beach

Cowboys Head Coach Ron Thurston told ESPN. Thurston is also a BSO deputy.

"I was a kid. I didn't know what was going on," former player Rob Glover,

now 23 years old, who took money while playing youth football, told ESPN. "

People who don't know me just want to give me all kinds of cash and stuff.

It was good at the time, but now I know it's a bad thing to do."

Glover didn't know it was a payoff from men who won bets on his performance.

"It was a $100 bill. He was like, 'Run it back, I'm going to give you this

here. You run it back, I'm going to run down and give it to you,'" said

Glover. "So, I ran it back for 99 yards, and, he ran back -- back of the end

zone -- I ran by the coolers, he ran back and gave me a $100 bill."

Anyone with information about the gambling on youth sports elsewhere in

South Florida is asked to call the Youth Football Hotline at 954-888-5259. Return to index of stories...
