HELLO-2 SHOT

GOOD MORNING AND WELCOME TO NBC-2 NEWS TODAY.

I'M JOE ROETZ.

AND I'M KELLY CRESWELL.

TODAY IS SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 4,

WE'LL HAVE A LOOK AT TODAY'S TOP STORIES IN JUST A MINUTE.

BUT FIRST METEOROLOGIST JASON DUNNING IS HERE WITH YOUR FIRST ALERT FORECAST. Return to index of stories...

WEATHER-WX CENTER

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

The hits just keep on coming for Southwest Florida with another day of beautiful, sunny weather expected to close out the weekend.

The only real blemish in our forecast today is some patchy dense fog early this morning that could make visibility poor in spots until the fog fades by 8 a.m.

Once the fog clears, we'll enjoy another sunny day with comfortable humidity and some very pleasant temperatures.

After starting in the low 60s and upper 50s this morning, temperatures will warm nicely this afternoon with highs projected to reach the low to mid 80s, which is right on target with today's average.

Our winds will be out of the east for most of the day from 5-10 mph until the west coast sea breeze leads to a westerly wind shift during the afternoon.

More patchy fog will develop late tonight and linger through mid morning Monday. Aside from the fog, our sky will stay mostly clear through the overnight with lows dipping into the low to mid 60s.

Monday will be another sunny, dry day, but humidity levels will be up a few notches. Still, Monday will be a very pleasant day with highs in the low to mid 80s.

The next weather system we're tracking, a cold front, will slide through Southwest Florida on Election Day, but we don't expect to get a whole lot of rain from this. We'll see the potential for some isolated showers Tuesday afternoon and evening, but the real effect from this front will come Wednesday.

Temperatures will cool quite a bit starting Wednesday with highs only reaching the mid 70s and low dipping into the low 50s by Wednesday night.

Thursday looks like another beauty, too, with highs in the mid 70s, low humidity, and no rain. Return to index of stories...

ROMNEY CAMPAIGN TODAY-PKG

LOCATION/STORY:

wsGMARomneyPKG

SUPERS:

ANNE ROMNEY

MITT ROMNEY/ Presidential Candidate

SCRIPT:

Overnight in front of a crowd of 17 thousand -- Mitt Romney -- in Colorado -

- in an all out sprint to the finish.

"We need you Colorado!"

In the last 24 hours -- both campaigns criss crossing the country - and both

-- stopping in Dubuque, Iowa-

And Romney - whose closing argument makes the case that HE is the candidate

who will reach across the aisle -

now asking supporters to reach across the street:

"I want you to reach across the street to the neighbor, who has that other

sign in his front yard. And I'm going to reach across the aisle in

Washington, D.C., to the politicians who are working for the other candidate

."

On the campaign plane,

Ann Romney made a quick trip to the back of the plane - carrying pumpkin

whoopee pies.

Talking about the American people who are hurting.

3 more days she said.

"It's been long. It's been a long road."

Then on to Colorado - where- Ann Romney - was visibly moved - by the

thousands who gathered at the first stop-- a hangar in Colorado Springs:

"That was quite amazing to walk in and have this kind of emotion come to us.

Chokes up. It makes me believe we can win Colorado. Cheers. / FLASH TO

/ "This is our time to turn. turn this country around."

And her husband, in these final hours - turning back to the central argument

of his campaign - that this election is about who can fix the economy.

"I can't wait to get started. He's hoping we'll settle, but Americans don't

settle. We build. We aspire. We listen to the voice inside that says "We

can do better! A Better life for our kids!" Return to index of stories...

Though more than two decades have past, Lee County detectives say they're just one small piece away from turning a missing persons case into a murder case - and a murder case into a solved case.

Det. Matthew Sands - "It could break the case wide open - just knowing where she's at."

In July 1990, Verna Richardson left her Fort Myers home with her ex-boyfriend, Alexander Smith. She lived there with her grandchildren, who she was helping raise, and had been dating Smith while estranged from her husband.

Trish Routte: But when Richardson and her husband decided to reconcile, it was time for Smith to move on, and for Richardson to get back to the life she had before. However something went very wrong that day, and Richardson - who was extraordinarily dedicated to her family - would never be seen again.

Det. Matt Sands - "She was throwing him out of the house. He had to go. When he left, they moved his property and she never came back."

Suspicion immediately fell upon the scorned Alexander Smith. In fact two days after Richardson went missing, Smith wrecked his ex-girlfriends car on I-75. Richardson, however, was still nowhere to be found.

Det. Sands - "He is denying his involvement at this time, but there are obvious holes in his story and we feel he is the person responsible."

Oddly, shortly after Richardson disappeared, Smith decided to change his name to Marion Williams. He also relocated out of Fort Myers, and to this date, manages to evade arrest because without a body, detectives can only treat this as a missing persons case - and not a homicide.

Det. Sands - "If we find her remains, there are still places we can take the case and bring the proper person to justice."

The key to making that happen is for someone who's had contact with Alexander Smith to come forward, and help deputies find the place that Richardson was left to die.

Det. Sands - "Maybe that one little key that they have had in communication with Alexander Smith may be something that could lead us to where Verna Richardson is now."

In the meantime, detectives actively work on the case, and family members remain deeply involved, hopeful that someday soon, they can lay their mother, grandmother and wife to rest in peace.

For Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers, I'm Trish Routte. Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

HIKER RESCUED-PKG

SCRIPT:

Steven Ainsworth was running out of time.

STEVE AINSWARTH I FELT I COULDN'T MAKE IT THROUGH ONE MORE NIGHT.

The 56-year-old hiker set out Monday in Tennessee on the final leg of a 2-

thousand mile hike along the Appalachian Trail. But superstorm Sandy hit

unexpectedly fast dropping record levels of snow.

STEVE AINSWORTH / RESCUED HIKER I WAS ABSOLUTELY STUNNED. I HAD NO IDEA

THERE WAS GOING TO BE THAT MUCH SNOW.

He was stranded in a tiny shelter for THREE DAYS. Hiking to safety

impossible.

STEVE AINSWORTH / RESCUED HIKER IT TOOK ME EIGHT HOURS TO GO ABOUT A MILE

AND A QUARTER.

With food and water running out and unable to feel his freezing feet

Ainsworth needed help. His phone managed just enough signal to reach 9-1-1.

STEVE AINSWORTH / RESCUED HIKER I WAS IN PRETTY TOUGH SHAPE AT THAT POINT.

Deep snow blocked rescuers on the ground.

NATS -HELICOPTER TAKEOFF

So on Friday. Tennessee Highway Patrol Sergeant Brad Lund and team took to

the skies.

SGT. BRAD LUND / TENNESSEE HIGHWAY PATROL WE WERE ABLE TO FOLLOW HIS

FOOTPRINTS IN THE SNOW FOR APPROXOMATELY A MILE AND A HALF AND THAT'S HOW WE

FINALLY LOCATED HIM.

But conditions turned treacherous.

SGT. AUSSIE THAXTER / TENNESSEE HIGHWAY PATROL THE WINDS WERE REALLY HOWLING

.

TROOPER STEVE MANNING / TENNESSEE HIGHWAY PATROLIT WAS LIKE RIDING A ROLLER

COASTER AND BUMPER CARS AT THE SAME TIME.

Dodging trees. trooper Jeff Bucannan is lowered to find Ainsworth. his

shoes now frozen.

TROOPER JEFF BUCHANNAN / TENNESSEE HIGHWAY PATROL HE STUCK HIS HEAD OUT OF

HIS TENT AND SAID HE'S NEVER BEEN SO GLAD TO SEE ANYBODY IN HIS WHOLE LIFE.

Ainsworth. in only his SOCKS. is finally rescued.

STEVEN AINSWORTH THEY SAID THE FIRST THING TO ME, THAT WAS: "DID YOU BRING A

CREDIT CARD?" I SAID "I DID." THEY SAID "GOOD. YOU'RE BUYING US STEAKS!" I

SAID "AS LONG AS I CAN HAVE THE FIRST ONE."

Ainsworth is exhausted but otherwise fine. and grateful.

STEVEN AINSWORTH YOU KNOW, THEY'LL SAY "THAT'S OUR JOB, THAT'S WHAT WE'RE

SUPPOSED TO DO. BUT I'M TELLING YOU, THAT'S MORE THAN A JOB. Return to index of stories...

INTRO: THE AVERAGE AGE FOR AN AUTISM DIAGNOSIS IS FIVE YEARS OLD. FAR TOO LATE AS FAR AS EXPERTS ARE CONCERNED. EARLIER IS BETTER WHEN IT COMES TO GETTING SUCCESSFUL THERAPY. IT BEGINS WITH PARENTS LEARNING THE SIGNS OF AUTISM. AMY OSHIER REPORTS IN TODAYS HEALTH MATTERS.

PKG:

SITTING UP, ROLLING OVER, CRAWLING AND WALKING ARE BENCHMARKS IN A BABY'S LIFE. BUT SO IS TALKING. SPEECH IS ONE OF THE FIRST INDICATORS THAT A CHILD MAY HAVE A DEVELOPMENTAL PROBLEM INCLUDING AUTISM.

JAMI HALLMAN/NURSE PRACTICIONER

RUNS:

3:42 Many parents are concerned and they just don't know where to turn. And we are here, not only to look for autism, but even some developmental delays.

THE CDC RECOMMENDS AN EVALUATION WHENEVER A CHILD FAILS TO MEET THESE MILESTONES: BABBLING BY 12 MONTHS, GESTURING- WHICH INCLUDES POINTING OR WAVING BY 12 MONTHS, SINGLE WORDS BY 16 MONTHS AND PHRASES BY 24. JAMI HALLMAN CONDUCTS AUTISM SCREENINGS FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM.

JAMI HALLMAN/NURSE PRACTICIONER

RUNS:

:40 It addresses concerns about language and if their child has oddities, such as not playing with toys the way that other children would play with them. For example, instead of playing with the entire car they would spin the wheels of the car and be obsessed about continuing to spin the wheels of the car. Building blocks, instead of building them up they continue to line them up in a specific order.

THIS BEHAVIOR DOESN'T MEAN A CHILD HAS AUTISM, BUT IT'S A RED FLAG. AUTISM SCREENINGS INCLUDE A CHECKLIST, COMPLETED BY A PARENT AND ONE-ON-ONE TIME BETWEEN SCREENER AND CHILD.

JAMI HALLMAN/NURSE PRACTICIONER

RUNS:

1:56 We really want to get our hands on that child and see what their reaction is with us. Many times the child may fail the questionnaire that the parent completed, but we will notice maybe it's more of a language delay.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

An early diagnosis can make a world of difference. It opens the door to therapies that can improve social and communication skills.

SHERRI CAMPBELL/NURSE PRACTICIONER

RUNS:

:15 We can get in with the services: speech therapy, behavioral therapy, to help the child reach higher potential. Sometimes when the children come back to us, they don't even look like same child.

RECOGNIZING EARLY SIGNS OF AUTISM, MAY BE THE KEY TO UNLOCKING YOUR CHILD'S POTENTIAL. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER.
