FORECAST OPEN Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

RAIN AND COOLER WEATHER ON THE WAY

What a difference twenty four hours can make. Sunday we were able to go out and enjoy the sunshine; however, Monday was the complete opposite.

Is it a sign of changes to come? Absolutely, but those changes will be short lived. We'll see the clouds for another day, and come tomorrow afternoon will add in a fleeting glimpse of rainfall.

The system that will bring us the rain is currently dropping down from Missouri. When it reaches the northern Gulf it will start to intensify, and that will cause it to swing a cold front our way. That front will serve as the focal point for rain as it passes through later in the day. Thunder will be the exception and not the rule. We expect only heavy downpours at times while the strong storms stay well to our north.

As we go into Wednesday that same system pushes east and starts riding up the Atlantic Coast. From there it looks to intensify very rapidly and that will help pull cool, comfortable air into southwest Florida.

We'll see temperatures in the 70s during the daytime, and low 50s during the morning hours. Those numbers begin to moderate on Friday as 80s return to the area.

Our skies look great after Tuesday, too. Lots of sunshine, but something interesting happens during this time of the year when cool air enters the Gulf and Atlantic waters. The cold air meets the warmer sea surface temperatures and that creates low, puffy clouds we call "stratocumulus."

Those clouds will impact Wednesday and Wednesday only. Thursday, Friday, and your weekend will be full of sunshine.

The same system that will give us our rain will continue to cruise up the east coast this week. It'll continue to strengthen, and on Thursday, sadly, it'll impact the Mid-Atlantic and New England area. That's the same region hit hard by Hurricane Sandy. Thankfully this system will not even compare to Sandy, but will add insult to injury.

They're going to see winds sustained of 25 to 35 MPH with gusts up to 50. Heavy rains will be an issue so coastal and inland flooding is a hazard, too. Along with that cold air on the backside is the perfect ingredient for heavy, wet snow.

Thus, adding insult to injury.

Make sure your family and friends back in the Northeast are away of this possible Nor'easter. Return to index of stories...

"Some of the strongest people I've met have endured some of the strongest challenges in life."

HALLOWEEN NIGHT, 19-92…

"They took off drag racing. 90 miles per hour in a 30 mile per hour zone. We hit a parked car and then slammed head on into a tree."

IN MINUTES, SABRINA COHEN'S LIFE CHANGED FOREVER. SHE WENT FROM AN ACTIVE 14-YEAR-OLD TO A QUADRIPLEGIC.

"And been confined to a wheelchair ever since."

AND EVER SINCE, SHE'S BEEN AN ADVOCATE -- SPEAKING OUT ON EVERYTHING FROM PEER PRESSURE TO SPEEDING…

BUT DURING A CONFERENCE IN 2004, HER FOCUS TURNED A CORNER.

"The mission, today, of my foundation is to reverse paralysis with chronic spinal cord injuries."

THE SABRINA COHEN FOUNDATION HAS HELPED RAISE MORE THAN 150-THOUSAND DOLLARS FOR STEM CELL RESEARCH. 128-MILLION PEOPLE SUFFER FROM DISEASES THAT COULD BE TREATED THROUGH STEM CELL THERAPY. IN THEORY, HARVESTED CELLS COULD HELP REBUILD SABRINA'S SPINAL CORD.

"There's about 500,000 left-over embryos sitting in fertility clinics that doctors have found that we can extract the cells from and use them to further research."

OVER THE LAST SEVEN YEARS, SHE'S HELPED TO BUILD A GLOBAL NETWORK OF SCIENTISTS AND CLINICIANS IN THE FIELD OF REGENERATIVE MEDICINE -- ADDRESSING CONGRESS, THE U-N, AND EVEN DOING STAND-UP TO RAISE FUNDS AND AWARENESS.

"It only makes you stronger and sometimes a better person, and somebody who's capable of making a difference in this world."

MAKING A DIFFERENCE IS SOMETHING SAMANTHA ULMER ALSO KNOWS A LOT ABOUT.

THE 24-YEAR-OLD LIVES WITH THE KNOWLEDGE THAT ONE DAY, SOMETHING AS SLIGHT AS A HAND TICK COULD BE THE START OF A GENETIC DISORDER THAT CAUSES HER TO LOSE CONTROL OF HER BOWELS, FORGET WHO SHE IS AND EVENTUALLY DIE.

"It is scary because I've seen what it did to my grandmother. It's even more scary with my uncle who was just recently diagnosed as well."

AS THE DEADLY NEURODEGENERATIVE DISEASE IS PASSED THROUGH FAMILIES, SYMPTOMS START DEVELOPING AT YOUNGER AGES. SAM DOESN'T WANT TO KNOW IF SHE HAS THE GENE. INSTEAD, SHE'S WORKING TO EDUCATE.

ARMED WITH SURVEYS, RESEARCH AND HER OWN WHITE COAT, THE MED SCHOOL STUDENT HOSTS SUPPORT GROUPS AND EVENTS RAISING MONEY AND AWARENESS. THROUGH HER PROJECT, SHE'S SCHOOLED PROFESSIONALS AND THE PUBLIC ABOUT THE DISEASE.

"I definitely wanted to make that more aware and make the disease more known because there are tons of people suffering from it."

TWO MONTHS AGO, WINSTON JACKSON WOULD'VE BEEN HARD PRESSED TO ATTEMPT THIS.

WINSTON JACKSON/UNDERGOING SPINE THERAPY

RUNS:

:38: Yeah, I have an out of line disk and a pinched nerve.

A SORE SPINE MADE EVEN THE SMALLEST MOVEMENTS INCREDIBLY PAINFUL.

WINSTON JACKSON/UNDERGOING SPINE THERAPY

RUNS:

:44 Lifting anything over ten pounds or bending down low to lift anything you get a sharp pain in lower back, like a knife.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

In 2007 alone, 27 million Americans over age 18 reported having back problems. It's so pervasive, medical professionals are constantly seeking new ways to beat back pain.

LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM IS TACKLING THE SPINE PROBLEM WITH A THREE-PRONG APPROACH.

KATH KINROSS/DOCTOR OF PHYSICAL THERAPY

RUNS:

4:03: Phase one is when you first are aware that you're having back pain, when you first go to the doctor. Phase two is when you first start traditional physical therapy, so you're working one-on-one with a therapist reducing the pain and inflammation. Phase three, which is kind of a more unique idea that we have been offering here at the Wellness Center, is to try and get you back into a more general exercise problem.

THAT'S WHERE WE FOUND WINSTON.IN LEVEL THREE SPINE THERAPY.

Nat 3-H264

AMY- How many do you do? WINSTON I do two sets mostly everything of the weight.

WINSTON JACKSON/UNDERGOING SPINE THERAPY

RUNS:

01:56 It's mostly anything that has to do with your normal function of your back that you would do in a normal day, they are doing it here with weights.

KATH KINROSS/DOCTOR OF PHYSICAL THERAPY

RUNS:

5:22 When people first start with the Phase three we take the time to show them how to set-up the equipment, which really gives us a chance to actually really practice how to bend and how to move something that has a little bit of weight to it and not hurt your back.

THIS FINAL LEVEL OF THERAPY STRESSES FOUR FUNDAMENTALS: FLEXIBILITY, STRENGTH, ENDURANCE AND EDUCATION. IT'S MADE A HUGE DIFFERENCE TO WINSTON.

WINSTON JACKSON/UNDERGOING SPINE THERAPY

RUNS:

3:13: Oh yeah, I mean I can lift my kids now.

ARE YOU *ADDICTED* TO YOUR CELL PHONE?

SERIOUSLY. IT IS A MEDICAL PROBLEM AND IT HAS A NAME.

A RECENT STUDY FOUND 66% OF PEOPLE SHOW SYMPTOMS OF "NOMOPHOBIA".

MANY OF US ARE NERVOUS ABOUT BEING WITHOUT OR PHONES. BUT FOR SOME PEOPLE, BEING WITHOUT THEIR PHONE CAN CAUSE SEVERE ANXIETY OR EVEN PANIC ATTACKS.

IT'S A CELL PHONE SOCIETY. WE ARE TETHERED TO OUR CELL PHONES LIKE IT'S AN EXTENSION OF OURSELVES.

BUT WHAT HAPPENS, WHEN YOUR ATTACHMENT TO YOUR PHONE… STARTS TO BECOME A PROBLEM?

"I remember I was crying, I was angry."

FOR CHRISTIANA IKE, NOT HAVING HER PHONE PROVOKES EXTREME ANXIETY.

SHE HAS THREE PHONES, AND CARRIES 2 PHONE CHARGERS WITH HER AT ALL TIMES.

SHE EVEN TAKES HER PHONE WITH HER IN THE SHOWER.

"I'll have it sitting there on the counter, because I'm thinking, what if President Obama calls or the pope, I don't know why I do that."

THESE ARE SYMPTOMS OF NOMOPHOBIA…

"Nomophobia means no mobile phone phobia."

SYMPTOMS OF NOMOPHOBIA INCLUDE:

PANIC AND ANXIETY WHEN SEPARATED FROM YOUR PHONE

HAVING MULTIPLE PHONES

COMPULSIVE CHECKING OF PHONE FOR MESSAGES, BATTERY LIFE

USING PHONE IN INAPPROPRIATE PLACES

PHONE ACTIVITY BECOMING AN ISSUE IN RELATIONSHIPS, WORK OR SCHOOL

THE BRITISH SURVEY RECENTLY FOUND THAT AS MANY AS 66% OF PEOPLE HAVE SOME FORM OF NOMOPHOBIA… BUT FOR SOME PEOPLE, THIS CAN BECOME MORE SERIOUS…

"For some people who use the phone excessively, we know that the brain is actually responding to the phone as if it is a drug."

FOR IKE THIS HAS AFFECTED HER EVERY DAY INTERACTIONS.

"Unfortunately I become so attached to communicating with everybody via my iphone, that I become less attached to people who are physically in front of me. And that's where it becomes detrimental."

SHE IS PART OF A NOMOPHOBIA RECOVERY GROUP. HERE SHE LEARNS HOW TO BREAK HER HABIT.

"So we teach them in treatment how to self monitor their behaviors, how to id when their behaviors have become excessive. How to use coping skills to manage their urges to use the internet or the phone."

"As opposed to thinking of myself as being trapped without my phone, I am actually trying to focus on how it can actually be freeing to not have my phone." Return to index of stories...
