DEFYING MOST PREDICTIONS--

THEY ALSO PICKED UP SEATS IN THE HOUSE--

IS IF THE PRESIDENT AND CONGRESS--

CAN RESOLVE THE EXTREMELY CONTENTIOUS ISSUES FACING THIS COUNTRY.

MARK GREENBLATT CONTINUES OUR TEAM COVERAGE OF DECISION 2012. Return to index of stories...

CONGRESS CONTROL-PKG

IF YOU'RE HOPING THIS ELECTION WOULD CHANGE THE FACE OF CONGRESS-

YOU'LL HAVE TO LOOK BELOW THE SURFACE.

SOT REID

"I'm not kidding. I'm glad to be back.

HARRY REID WILL STILL LEAD THE DEMOCRATS. WHO HELD ON TO THE SENATE.

AND JOHN BOEHNER IS EXPECTED TO REMAIN SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE- WHERE

REPUBLICANS REMAIN IN CONTROL.

BUT IN one SHIFT. THE TWO MEN FAMOUS FOR BICKERING- AND STONEWALLING ON

THE NATION'S DEBT CRISIS. AT LEAST SOUND LIKE THEY'RE READY TO SOLVE IT.

SOT REID:

"I'm going to do everything within my power to be as conciliatory as

possible. I want to work together."

SOT BOEHNER:

TBA

EVEN PAUL RYAN WILL RETURN TO A LEADERSHIP ROLE IN THE HOUSE.

WHERE HE WON RE-ELECTION in wisconsin, while losing the race for vice

president.

REACH HISTORIC NUMBERS NOW IN THE CONGRESS TO COME.

the extremes of their parties than the women they're replacing." Return to index of stories...

"Christmas in July. Everybody starts, even though it's 110 degrees."

AT KAY'S HALLMARK IN THE IONA AREA -- CHRISTMAS STARTS WITH COLLECTIBLE ORNAMENTS.

AND RIGHT AFTER HALLOWEEN - THE HOLIDAYS TAKE OVER.

"It's really because consumers are starting to ask you already, and that's the number one thing. Once we get asked more than two times in a given month for Merry Christmas items, you're to put it out. It's time."

"It's too soon, but I understand"

"We got through the election, and I thought we'd have some peace and quiet for a while, and first thing I did

when I turned on the TV this morning was to hear Christmas carols. It's too soon."

"The National Retail Federation says retailers were actually unusually quiet this October. That's because of all these political advertisements."

THE RETAIL INDUSTRY PREDICTS INCREASED HOLIDAY SALES THIS YEAR - WILL BE HELPED BY AN EXTRA WEEKEND BEFORE CHRISTMAS.

THEY SAY 40 PERCENT OF HOLIDAY SHOPPERS START BEFORE HALLOWEEN.

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

"A FEW CHILLY NIGHTS AHEAD"

You could definitely feel a change in the airmass today as highs peaked only into the lower to middle 70s, which kept us a good 10° below the norm for this time of year. For the remainder of our Wednesday afternoon we will see a few clouds mixing in with our sunshine, as a northwest wind continues to usher in some cooler air that's rushing in over the relatively warmer waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

That will more than likely keep a few patchy clouds in the forecast tonight with the possibility of a sprinkle or two. You'll also notice a more dramatic drop in our temperatures by morning as they settle into the middle 50s along the urban corridor with a few upper 40s deeper inland. Slightly milder conditions will be felt along our coastal and beach locations with temperatures in the upper 50s to 60°.

A few clouds are still possible in the morning forecast for Thursday, however with a northerly wind developing throughout the day, that will allow some even drier and cooler air to filter down the spine of the peninsula. This will clear any of the leftover clouds out allowing for bright sunshine to return to Southwest Florida. Despite our sunny skies during the afternoon, temperatures will only climb into the lower 70s with very comfortable humidity levels.

Thursday night looks to be the chilliest of the week or even this season. Temperatures will plummet into the upper 40s to low 50s along the urban corridor with a few middle 40s across our inland and northern communities.

It will be a spectacular finish to the work week as high pressure remains in control of our weather pattern with plentiful sunshine, low humidity, and temperatures in the upper 70s. By the weekend, our winds will take more of an easterly turn, which will bring a bit of low level moisture across the state. By Saturday and Sunday, expect a few more clouds dotting the sky with temperatures recovering back into the lower 80s.

Right now computer forecast models are indicating another cold front moving down the peninsula Tuesday and Wednesday with the possibility of a few more cloudy periods. Return to index of stories...

With pads out and pencils in hand,

representatives for family dollar got to work. The architect - forced to come up with a new design - after the cape coral planning and zoning commission shot down the original proposal.

-patti martin/P&Z Chair-"one of the things I find impossible to support is the construction of the building."

Chairwoman patti martin is worried the value-store will cheapen the look of the city's downtown corridor. And she's not alone.

-max forgey/P&Z commissioner-"my concern is this is going to set a tone for that neighborhood and I don't think this is setting the best tone."

SOME COMMISSIONERS WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE EXTERIOR OF THE NEW FAMILY DOLLAR STORE LOOK MORE LIKE THE NEW WALGREENS LOCATED JUST DONE THE STREET. THE PHARMACY GIANT TWEAKED THE ORIGINAL DESIGN TO MAKE THE BUILDING MORE ASTHETICALLY PLEASING.

The attorney representing family dollar pushed back.

-charles basinet/attorney, family dollar-"we believe the design of this facility is consistent with the vision plan."

But in an effort to appease the commission - and get approval for 11 deviations - charles basinet relented.

-basinet-"I do understand your concerns."

Paving the way for 8,300 square foot retail store.
