TODAY LAW ENFORCEMENT AND FIREFIGHTERS FROM EIGHT COUNTIES WERE TRAINED ON HOW TO RESCUE HORSE, COWS, OR ANY ANIMAL--
INLUDING THIS DOG THAT WAS RESCUED IN ALACHUA COUNTY EARLIER THIS YEAR.
AS NBC-2'S ELIZABETH BILLINGSLEY REPORTS - IT'S THANKS TO A FEDERAL GRANT FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY -- TO BETTER PREPARE LOCAL AGENCIES FOR EMERGENCIES.

HERE'S THE DRILL -
IMAGINE THIS HORSE IS STUCK IN A POOL, WITH NO WAY EASY WAY OUT.
IN THE PAST YEAR - ITS HAPPENED FOUR TIMES IN LEE COUNTY
"The last incident that we had was in Alva where a horse fell into a rather deep pond. It was wintertime, it was really cold out. The animal's down in this pond. We were there probably 6 hours."
NOW - RESCUERS ARE TRAINED TO SET UP THIS PULLEY SYSTEM IN A HALF HOUR. IT ALLOWS RESCUERS TO HOIST THE ANIMAL OUT OF HARM'S WAY MORE QUICKLY -- AND WITHOUT THE STRUGGLE.
"We were exhausted, of course, the horse was exhausted. This equipment that we have now will just take all of that out and put it together, it will be much easier to do the job."
THE TWO-DAY LARGE ANIMAL RESCUE TRAINING AND THE 16-THOUSAND DOLLAR TRAILER OF EQUIPEMNT COMES COURTESY OF A DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY GRANT.
"In the past maybe the animal got quote, unquote "cowboyed." Now we've tried to show them a more humane way to get the same accomplishment."
WITH THE TRAINING, THE TEAM CAN RESPOND TO ANIMAL EMERGENCY CALLS WITHIN A TWO-HOUR RADIUS -- FROM SARASOTA TO COLLIER AND AS FAR EAST AS HIGHLANDS, GLADES, AND HENDRY COUNTIES.
"sometimes there's a lot of people who just do rescues that we never hear about, so now that law enforcement is better trained and better equipped, as folks know that they're here, they may get used more often."
THE TEAM INCLUDES VETERINARIANS AS WELL.
AT THE LEE CIVIC CENTER, ELIZABETH BILLINGSLEY, NBC-2.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
Thursday night looks to be the chilliest of the week. Temperatures will plummet into the upper 40s to low 50s along the urban corridor with a few middle 40s across our inland and northern communities under clear skies.
It will be a spectacular finish to the work week as high pressure remains in control of our weather pattern with plentiful sunshine, low humidity, and temperatures in the upper 70s. By the weekend, our winds will take more of an easterly turn, which will bring a bit of low level moisture across the state. By Saturday and Sunday, expect a few more clouds dotting the sky with temperatures recovering back into the lower 80s.
Right now computer forecast models are indicating another cold front moving down the peninsula Tuesday with the possibility of a few more cloudy periods and our next chance of rain.
