FOR 28 HOURS, CREWS HAVE BEEN FIGHTING A SMOLDERING PILE OF MULCH IN LEE
COUNTY.
IT'S A FIRE THAT BROKE OUT AT AN ORGANIC WASTE RECYCLING FACILITY ON OLD
US 41 NEAR ALICO ROAD.
THE BIGGEST PROBLEM. PLUMES OF SMOKE, FLOWING INTO NEIGHBORHOODS,
FIRE OFFICIALS SAY PEOPLE LIVING IN ISLAND PARK, THE FOREST OR IONA
COULD ALL BE AFFECTED.
SOT:Mike Weston, Florida Forest Service "Stay indoors if you have a
allergy with smoke, leave the house for the day, go to the beach, do
something else that you're able to, go to the park, go to a friends, to
minimize the time that they're in that."
THE FIRE INSIDE OF THIS PILE COULD HAVE BEEN BURNING FOR DAYS BEFORE IT
WAS NOTICED.
TO PUT IT OUT, CREWS HAVE TO BREAK UP.
USING HEAVY EQUIPMENT, THEY CHIP AWAY AT THE MULCH AND SPRAY IT DOWN.
SOT: Assistant Chief David Cambareri, San Carlos Park Fire and Rescue
"The pile is very dense so it requires a lot of work from the equipment,
our staff has been here 24 hours a day manning the apparatus."
IT'S A PROCESS THAT CAN TAKE DAYS.
MEANING FOR PEOPLE LIVING NEARBY --- DAYS MORE OF SMOKE.
SOT: David "Once we get the piles broken apart, we'll be able to
concentrate our streams on them and hopefully get them out within the
next few days."

MULTIPLE FEDERAL OFFICIALS TELL NBC NEWS THAT THE FBI INVESTIGATION BEGAN WITH A COMPLAINT FROM THIS WOMAN, JILL KELLEY OF TAMPA, WHO WITH HER HUSBAND IS CLOSE PERSONAL FRIENDS WITH PETRAEUS AND HIS WIFE.
KELLEY COMPLAINED THAT SHE WAS RECEIVING ANONYMOUS, EMAILS FROM SOMEONE SHE DID NOT KNOW.
OFFICIALS TELL NBC NEWS THAT THOSE E-MAILS LED TO THE DISCOVERY OF OTHERS BETWEEN GENERAL PETRAEUS AND PAULA BROADWELL -- THAT WERE INDICATIVE OF AN EXTRA-MARITAL AFFAIR.
PREVIOUSLY, BROADWELL SPOKE PUBLICLY ABOUT HER ACCESS TO THE GENERAL:
"I was embedded with General Petraeus in Afghanistan and it was a little confusing for some of the folks there because I'm also a military reservist with a top secret clearance and then some. So a lot of my former peers didn't know how to treat me."
GENERAL PETRAEUS IS NOT UNDER INVESTIGATION. HE HAS RESIGNED AND SPOKE WITH HIS FORMER SPOKESPERSON SATURDAY:
"He is embarrassed but he's keenly aware of the hurt and pain he's caused and he is concerned that people understand that this one happened after he had retired from the Army."
ON CAPITOL HILL, LAWMAKERS WANT TO KNOW IF THE INVESTIGATION WRAPPED WITHOUT CRIMINAL CHARGES BEFORE /iTHE ELECTION. WHY PRESIDENT OBAMA WASN'T TOLD UNTIL AFTER/i:
/ Chairman, Cmte on Homeland Security 1:14-1:27
"To have someone out there in such a sensitive position who the FBI thought perhaps could have been compromised or was under the scope of an FBI investigation who may or may not have been having an affair at the time, that to me had to have been brought to the President."
NOW, NBC NEWS HAS CONFIRMED PETRAEUS CONDUCTED HIS OWN INVESTIGATION ON THE GROUND IN LIBYA.
CONGRESS IS BEGINNING HEARINGS INTO THE DEADLY ATTACK THERE AND MAY STILL ASK PETRAEUS TO TESTIFY.
NO COMMENT SINCE ALL THIS BROKE FROM GENERAL PETRAEUS, FROM BROADWELL, BUT WE DO HAVE A STATEMENT FROM JILL KELLEY SAYING WE RESPECT HIS AND HIS FAMILY'S PRIVACY AND WE WANT THE SAME FOR US AND OUR THREE CHILDREN.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
The warming trend that started over the weekend will carry over into our Monday, and we may even see a few passing showers roaming across Southwest Florida through the day.
The main headline today is that we expect another warm and breezy day with a swift easterly breeze coming in at 5-15 mph with some higher gusts near 20 mph.
With no cold fronts coming to Southwest Florida during the week, temperatures will continue to stay fairly warm. Daytime highs in most spots will reach the mid 80s with highs close to the coast reaching the low 80s.
While rain prospects don't look to promising through the next several days, we will mention the potential for some passing showers today as some Atlantic moisture gets carried over with the easterly winds. If you manage to get a passing shower, it likely won't be too heavy or long lived. Aside from a few isolated showers, look for a mix of sun and clouds through the day.
Tuesday will be another warm day with highs in the mid 80s and a partly cloudy sky. A stray afternoon shower will be possible, but these will be pretty scarce.
Another change you'll likely notice this week is the higher humidity levels. It's not going to be a big jump, but this week will be a little more humid compared to that dry, crisp air we had a few days ago.
Confidence continues to remain high the next front that moves into the state will stall before making to Southwest Florida, so the mild, warm weather will continue all the way into the upcoming weekend.
By Sunday there's a chance our winds may turn more northerly, which would usher in some slightly cooler, drier air. We'll continue to track the possibility over the next several days, but until then, the warm weather rolls along!

NEITHER AMAZON NOR BARNES AND NOBLES WILL RELEASE FIGURES. ON THEIR KINDLES. OR NOOKS. BUT SALES OF BOTH ARE SAID TO HAVE NOTICEABLY FALLEN OFF.
"I wouldn't say it hasn't gone off a cliff or a fiscal cliff, if you will, but it's definitely leveled off"
CNET'S DAVID CARNOY. THINKS EREADER SALES WILL PICK RIGHT UP AGAIN COME THE HOLIDAYS. BECAUSE OF THE PLUMMETING PRICE TAG.
"These dedicated ereaders are becoming so cheap.it's just another item that people are gonna buy."
HOWEVER, OTHERS IN THE TECH-WORLD SAY EREADERS ARE BEING RENDERED REDUNDANT.EVEN OBSOLETE.
.BY TABLET COMPUTERS. THAT OFFER SO MUCH MORE THAN JUST.READING.
BUT CARNOY BELIEVES THAT'S THE EREADER'S APPEAL.
"The one thing that people complain about is that they're distracted when they use these tablets.there are games on them.there are movies and really if you're going to do reading, a lot of people just like having that dedicated ereading device."
HE SAYS THE LCD SCREENS OF TABLETS AREN'T AS EASY TO READ, ESPECIALLY OUTSIDE. PLUS EREADER BATTERIES LASTS SO MUCH LONGER.
. AND ADDS.EREADERS HAVE NEVER BEEN ABOUT THE HARDWARE.
"Ultimately, Amazon, Barnes & Nobles.they really just want you using their platform to buy books.it's really about the books."

The main reason we're here is because we knew how people came to New Orleans and a lot of that was New York firefighters. It was a big impact with that. They came and helped their fellow firefighters, helped feed us and do things so as soon as we had the opportunity to come up, we jumped on the truck, came up and started cooking jambalaya.
SANDY IS RESPONSIBLE FOR AT LEAST 113 DEATHS, 43 IN NEW YORK CITY ALONE.

SALES FOR MCDONALD'S *FALL FOR THE FIRST TIME IN NINE YEARS.

A BURGER, COKE AND FRIES.
IT'S BEEN A MCDONALD'S CLASSIC LUNCH TIME MEAL FOR MORE THAN 50 YEARS.
BUT ARE PEOPLE SPENDING LESS TIME FILLING UP ON FAST FOOD?
DO YOU BUY FAST FOOD AS MUCH, MORE OR LESS THAN YOU USED TO?
Ah, a lot less
DO YOU EAT FAST FOOD AS MUCH AS YOU USED TO?
Ah, yeah.
Probably less just because of the health factor.
IN OCTOBER, SALES AT MCDONALDS WENT DOWN FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE APRIL OF 2003. PROFITS HAVE ALSO TAKEN A RECENT TUMBLE. SO HAS THE FAST FOOD GIANT LOST ITS WAY?
"I mean when we were little, McDonalds was the place to go, and for little kids, I think it still is. But when you start to become a teenager there's a lot more options out there."
SOME OF THOSE OPTIONS ARE FAST-CASUAL RESTAURANTS AND OTHER HIGH-END RIVALS. BUT THERE'S ALSO AGRESSIVE FAST FOOD COMPETITORS OFFERING REVAMPED MENUS AND MARKETING CAMPAIGNS.
"McDonalds, it's still the big mac, it's still the fries. There's nothing new to go in there and get."
THERE WAS A TIME WE COULD RECITE THE MCDONALDS' COMMERCIALS AND JINGLES, BUT IS THAT THE CASE ANYMORE? HAS MCDONALDS GONE STALE?
"Years ago you looked at McDonalds, I would go to class and show their ads and say look, these are great commercials. When is the last time you can remember seeing a McDonalds commercial? They just don't have any impact any more."
MARKETING PROFESSOR MICHAEL BELCH SAYS MCDONALD'S NEEDS MORE PRODUCT INNOVATION AND CLEVER ADVERTISING.
ANOTHER THING THAT MAY BE HURTING, THE FACT THAT LAST YEAR, MCDONALD'S STARTED POSTING CALORIE COUNTS ON ITS MENU BOARDS.
"Some of the other places as far as health wise, offer a little better variety."
BUT DON'T COUNT OUT THE GOLDEN ARCHES JUST YET, ITS POPULAR PORK SANDWHICH MCRIB RETURNS IN DECEMBER. POTENTIAL SUCCESS DELIVERED ON A PLASTIC TRAY.

JEFF AND HEATHER MITCHELL'S KIDS LOVE TO PLAY AND AT 20 MONTHS, GRACE LIKE TO GET INTO THINGS. SO DOES HER THREE YEAR OLD BROTHER, JACKSON. SO THEY TRY TO KEEP DANGEROUS ITEMS OUT OF REACH.
JEFF IS A FIREFIGHTER-AND HIS BOSS, CAPTAIN NIM HARRIS IS THE SAFE KIDS COORDINATOR. HE TOOK US THROUGH MITCHELL'S HOME TO IDENTIFY POTENTIAL DANGERS.
FIRST WE GO TO THE KITCHEN. A HOT ZONE OF HAZARDS.
"Whatever's inside of that especially if it reaches a temperature of boiling and it spills on a child it's going to cause possibly first and second and degree burns."
UNDER THE SINK THEIR FIRE EXTINGUISHER IS IN THE BACK. IT SHOULD BE VISIBLE, AND ATTACHED UP ON THE KITCHEN WALL. THE MITCHELL'S DO GET A CHECK FOR CHILDPROOF LATCHES.
"There are a number of chemicals in there that are obviously dangerous for a child."
AND SOME CHEMICALS LIKE THIS BLUE GLASS CLEANER LOOK LIKE JUICE DRINKS TO KIDS.
TO MAKE SURE KIDS DON'T ESCAPE, A SECURITY ALARM ANNOUNCES OPEN DOORS.
THE FAMILY GETS A HIGH MARK FOR A WALL MOUNTED TV. TVS ON STANDS CAN EASILY FALL ON A CHILD.
A FIREPLACE HEARTH WITH A RAISED EDGE MIGHT CAUSE A CHILD TO TRIP INTO THE FIRE. KEEP KIDS THREE FEET AWAY!
TO PREVENT FURNITURE FROM TOPPLING, JEFF USES A WALL ANCHOR.
THE MITCHELL'S OLDEST SON HIT HIS HEAD ON A GLASS TABLE SO THEY MADE SOME CHANGES!
"We actually took him to Moses cone and had him looked at and ever since then, all of our furniture is round and padded. Ha, Ha!"
NEXT, CAPTAIN HARRIS FOUND A MAJOR STRANGULATION HAZARD-LOW HANGING WINDOW BLIND CORDS THAT SHOULD BE TUCKED UP HIGH.
WHEN HARRIS WAS A YOUNG BOY, HE ALMOST DIED FROM CORDS WRAPPED AROUND HIS NECK.
"My Dad fortunately found me within a matter of seconds, but at that point he went through the rooms and cut every cord off of blinds in the house."
AND IN AN INFANTS ROOM. TOO MANY TOYS IN THE CRIB AND EVEN A BUMPER CAN BLOCK A BABY'S AIR FLOW.
