Just driving down 41 to get here, we could immediately smell the smoke around island park road, even with the windows up and air conditioning on. Thats because smoke has been blowing from this recycling plant for a day and a half now. Take a look from our mast camera, crews are still working around the clock to put out the fire. Return to index of stories...

MULCH FIRE-PKG

A hazy morning glow rose over the piles of chopped up yard waste and vegetation at coastal grinding off of alico road. All day--crews from San Carlos fire and the Florida forest service pulled the burning piles apart and sprayed them over with water as clouds of smoke continued to blow through the area. FFS estimates it is working on an area 50 feet wide and 30 feet long and it will have crews busy for at least the next 48 hours making sure the fire is out. But that also means two more days of smoke filled air for allergy sufferers and people with respiratory problems. Doctor Larry Castillo of allergy and asthma says the piles of burning vegetation sends particles into the air, turning into a respiratory irritant that can cause sinus headaches, nasal congestion and coughing.

Larry Castillo, M.D., Allery & Asthma Care Centre "It can irritate the lungs, it can irritate the sinuses and definitely if you have sinus trouble or asthma, COPD, you want to be careful." Return to index of stories...

It's recommended that you stay indoors if you show those symptoms. But we did speak with other folks today who weren't bothered by the smoke. FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

The warming trend that started over the weekend will carry over into our Monday, and we may even see a few passing showers roaming across Southwest Florida through the day.

The main headline today is that we expect another warm and breezy day with a swift easterly breeze coming in at 5-15 mph with some higher gusts near 20 mph.

With no cold fronts coming to Southwest Florida during the week, temperatures will continue to stay fairly warm. Daytime highs in most spots will reach the mid 80s with highs close to the coast reaching the low 80s.

While rain prospects don't look to promising through the next several days, we will mention the potential for some passing showers today as some Atlantic moisture gets carried over with the easterly winds. If you manage to get a passing shower, it likely won't be too heavy or long lived. Aside from a few isolated showers, look for a mix of sun and clouds through the day.

Tuesday will be another warm day with highs in the mid 80s and a partly cloudy sky. A stray afternoon shower will be possible, but these will be pretty scarce.

Another change you'll likely notice this week is the higher humidity levels. It's not going to be a big jump, but this week will be a little more humid compared to that dry, crisp air we had a few days ago.

Confidence continues to remain high the next front that moves into the state will stall before making to Southwest Florida, so the mild, warm weather will continue all the way into the upcoming weekend.

By Sunday there's a chance our winds may turn more northerly, which would usher in some slightly cooler, drier air. We'll continue to track the possibility over the next several days, but until then, the warm weather rolls along! Return to index of stories...

"I couldn't get into any clubs because I had to come home and take care of her. I had like no social life."

A CAR ACCIDENT AND STROKE LEFT HER MOTHER PARTIALLY PARALYZED -- FORCING ANN-MARIE TO CARE FOR HER AND HER SICK SISTER.

"I asked like why would God do this to us, and why would he put the responsibilities on me."

THESE ARE THE FAMILIES CONNIE SISKOWSKI HAD IN MIND WHEN SHE FOUNDED THE CAREGIVING YOUTH PROJECT.

"The government started with support. For family caregivers, they only looked at adults, and I think it was through ignorance."

AT 11, CONNIE BEGAN CARING FOR HER SICK GRANDFATHER.

"I was the one who found him dead at 2:00 in the morning. I was 13 at the time."

SHE SAYS THE FIRST STEP IS LETTING KIDS KNOW THEY'RE NOT ALONE. THE PROJECT OFFERS IN-HOME HELP AND CLASSES AT SCHOOL. IT ALSO MAKES TEACHERS MORE AWARE OF THE STUDENT'S SITUATION. THROUGH CAMPS AND TRIPS, THESE CARE-GIVERS ARE GIVEN A CHANCE TO BE CARE-FREE.

"And so a little bit can really make a difference."

NOW, THE COOKING SKILLS ANN-MARIE LEARNED AT SEVEN ARE PAYING OFF. THE HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR IS NOW PREPARING FOR CULINARY SCHOOL.

COACH HITS PLAYER-PKG

IT'S THE SPLIT-SECOND SHOVE DIVIDING A UTAH COMMUNITY.

Just a routine football play that's turned into a nightmare.

WATCH AGAIN AS COACH NATE HARRIS APPEARS TO PUSH A PLAYER FROM THE OPPOSING TEAM DURING A GAME OCTOBER SIXTH. HERE IT IS SLOWED DOWN. YOU CAN SEE HARRIS MAKE CONTACT WITH THE 13 YEAR OLD AS HE'S RUNNING DOWN THE SIDELINE - KNOCKING HIM DOWN

nats: Get him off the field! Get him out of here.

THE 7TH GRADE PLAYER WHO'S NAME IS NOT BEING RELEASED APPEARED TO GET UP QUICKLY. BUT REPORTEDLY SUFFERED A SEASON ENDING CONCUSSION. HIS MOTHER LATER SPOKE OFF CAMERA TO A LOCAL T-V STATION.

He acutally stepped in, pulled his arms and went up under his chin, and flattened him. It's the most awful thing I ever witnessed in my life coming from a grown man.

AFTER THE HIT, HARRIS WAS EJECTED FROM THE GAME. BUT WHEN THIS GRAINY VIDEO BEGAN CIRCULATING HE WAS ALSO ARRESTED BOOKED ON SECOND DEGREE FELONY CHILD ABUSE.

At no no point was there any harm meant to be done. It's effected my business, my reputation.

IN AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW, HARRIS AND HIS ATTORNEY NOW SAY NEW VIDEO SHOT FROM A DIFFERENT ANGLE BACKS UP THEIR CLAIMS. LOOK AT THE DIFFERENCE IN THE TWO VIDEOS PLAYED SIDE BY SIDE.

I think the video speaks for itself. You see a defender coming at you 20 miles an hour, you're not going to let it hit you in the chin.

PROSECUTORS AGREED TO DROP THE FELONY CHARGES - CITING A LACK OF PHYSICAL INJURY. BUT LATE LAST WEEK, HARRIS WAS CHARGED WITH MISDEMEANOR ASSAULT AND WILL NOW HEAD TO COURT NEXT MONTH. THE FATHER OF SIX SAYS EVEN THE LESSER CHARGES ARE UNFAIR. BUT SAYS, HE UNDERSTANDS HOW THE PLAYER'S PARENTS FEEL. ESPECIALLY SINCE HIS OWN SONS WERE ALSO ON THE FIELD.

I took the hit, you know, it might have been a different story if I had jumped out of the way and my son would have been hit in the head and been hurt. Return to index of stories...
