The infamous house on fourth street went out with a bang.

Take sound

"I look out the window. There was a glow and then I could smell it."

Take sound

"And then you heard the pops and explosion."

Take sound

"And all of a sudden it went woof. The whole thing was in flames."

Take sound

"I said geez, I hope they hurry up cause the flames were licking off the side and they were coming out a good third of the way from the house."

FIRE MARSHALL CALLS IT ARSON.

Firefighters contained the BLAZE so neighbor John Wilkins didn't have to worry about his house. And john doesnt mind seeing the charred remains sitting next door.

Take sound

John Wilkins, Fort Myers Shores

"I'm glad to see that it burned, that means somebody will come in and have to tear the thing down. It was an eyesore, it was getting worse and worse since nobody was taking care of it."

It's this house--where Robert Tracey and Charles Sharp hoarded dozens of dogs four years ago. Living in their own feces and urine, Animal services rescued nearly 40 animals. It was described as one of the most severe cases of animal abuse ever seen---and the smell--even worse.

Take sound

John Wilkins

"The smell that came out of the house was overwhelming. No lie it would literally bring tears to your eyes if you took a whiff in."

The house was condemned. Tracey and Sharp both agreed to plea deals. Tracey served four years probation. Sharp served time in jail. Years later, Wilkins said he could finally open his windows because the terrible smell went away--but the house still stood.

Take sound

John Wilkins

"I figured somebody might come and knock it down. But it sat and sat until all if a sudden last night it went up in flames." Return to index of stories...

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

"STAYING WARM THURSDAY, COOLER CHANGES BY THE WEEKEND"

A mix of sun and clouds will close out our Wednesday afternoon with a couple of spotty showers riding the east and northeast breeze across the peninsula. Through the early evening hours, a shower or two is possible as rain prospects will remain near 20%. Any showers that do push into the viewing area should dissipate and fade away just after sunset with mainly dry conditions setting up for tonight.

Overnight, skies will go mostly clear and temperatures will fall back into the lower 60s inland with a middle 60s up and down the urban corridor.

The weak front that has stalled across north-central Florida continues to washout and our Thursday is shaping up to be a bit nicer. A push of some slightly drier air will keep our skies mostly to partly sunny during the day as rain chances will slip to below 20%. Our warm airmass that has been with us over the last several days, will continue to hang around with highs in the lower to middle 80s as we close out the work week.

Some changes are coming down the pike by the weekend, as another cold front pushes its way across the peninsula. This will bring us a few more cloudy periods early Saturday and even a couple of widely scattered showers. This time though, a cooler and drier airmass will make its way into our part of the state as winds become a bit more northerly. This will allow much cooler air to drain down the state resulting in cooler than normal temperatures beginning Sunday morning.

High pressure will dominate our weather early in the week bringing back mostly sunny skies, with temperatures climbing into the middle and upper 70s, while lows settle into the middle and upper 50s through mid week. Return to index of stories...
