EFFORTS ARE UNDERWAY TO SECURE A CEASEFIRE BETWEEN ISRAEL AND PALESTINIAN MILITANTS AFTER A FOURTH DAY OF AIRSTRIKES AND ROCKET FIRE.
THE SITUATION ESCALATED TODAY WHEN ISRAEL DESTROYED THE PRIME MINISTER'S OFFICE IN GAZA CITY.
NBC'S MARTIN FLETCHER HAS THIS REPORT FROM TEL AVIV.
Return to index of stories...
Palestinians are still firing rockets from Gaza into Israel and Israel's continuing to pound Palestinian targets in Gaza.
It has been an intensive day which began with 200 separate Israeli airstrikes against Gaza, killing at least 12 Palestinians.
They flattened the prime minister's office, they destroyed the police headquarters, attacking what they call Hamas symbols of power.
All eyes now are on Israel's army and the question is will Israel's army launch a ground invasion of Gaza.
The army is poised, they're ready, they're on the border.
Tanks are there, armored personnel carriers building up.
The Israeli government has given the OK to call up up to 75-thousand reserve soldiers to join the regular army.
But this evening because of that pressure, because of the buildup and the fear of a possible ground invasion, there's a great intensity now leading to talks among Arab states with Hamas trying to persuade them to agree with Israel for a truce.
And Israel is talking to the United States government and the government of Germany.
Everyone's trying to put together a truce, even if it's only a temporary one to begin as soon as possible.
REPORTER CLOSE:
THE ALTERNATIVE TO A TRUCE IS A GROUND INVASION.
THE QUESTION IS NOW WHAT COMES FIRST?
THE GROUND INVASION OF GAZA OR A TRUCE BETWEEN HAMAS AND ISRAEL, EVEN ONLY A TEMPORARY ONE?

Many residents of Hildale & Colorado City were shocked to find three of the most prominent businesses suddenly closed. The only grocery store, the hardware store, even a Radio Shack.
Imprisoned FLDS leader Warren Jeffs reportedly issued a Doomsday prophecy last Sunday, according to former member Isaac Wyler.
:21- 27
"FROM WHAT I'VE HEARD THERE WAS A PROPHECY THAT THE LIFTING UP WOULD OCCUR BEFORE THE END OF THE YEAR."
FLDS people believe in a literal, physical lifting up when the apocalypse comes.
:33- 37
"ALL THE RIGHTEOUS FLDS PEOPLE WOULD BE LIFTED UP AND EVERYBODY ELSE WOULD BE DESTROYED."
Even insiders are scared, according to private investigator Sam Brower. His sources say a warning from Jeffs was read aloud last Sunday to the so-called United Order.
"If you don't all come clean and confess your sins and wrongs," Jeffs reportedly said, "the Lord will send a scourge of death among the people of the United Order."
It's not clear if the prophecies are what led Jeffs' followers to close the businesses.

MIX OF SUN AND CLOUDS ON SUNDAY
Finally, those pesky clouds started to erode away on Saturday. Is that foreshadowing our days to come? Absolutely.
You're really going to like this forecast!
The reason why - an area of low pressure sitting to the northeast of Florida ushered in some dry air, and that dry air is helping to erase the clouds from our sky. However, we did pay a price for that on Saturday. The added sunshine, combined with that low, caused our atmosphere to become a little unstable. So as a result some of the area picked up a good deluge.
We're going to continue with the sunshine, but thanks to the dry air infiltrating southwest Florida, our rain chances will remain slim. In fact, 80% of the area will not see a drop on Sunday.
We'll start the week off on a dry note, too. Monday and Tuesday will be fabulous. Some clouds up above, yes, but lots of sunshine will permeate the southwest Florida skies! Lows will be around 60 and daytime highs around our average of 81.
On Wednesday we encounter another "obstacle" in our weather pattern. A tiny, but robust, low pressure will drop into the southeastern states. When that happens, a cold front will traverse the state, adding more clouds and increasing our rain chance.
Wednesday is the only day out of the next seven that could turn into a rain day.
After Wednesday, the sunshine comes back in full force. Clouds will be nearly nonexistent, and our temperatures will fall slightly above average, too!
Lows in the 50s, and highs in the 70s!
