TODAY IS SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 25
WE'LL HAVE A LOOK AT TODAY'S TOP STORIES IN JUST A MINUTE.
BUT FIRST METEOROLOGIST JASON DUNNING IS HERE WITH YOUR FIRST ALERT FORECAST.
Return to index of stories...
THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
One right after another, the "cold" fronts have just kept rolling through Southwest Florida like it's one of the stops along the Polar Express.
Granted, lows in the 50s and highs in the 70s wouldn't really be considered "polar," but our temperatures have certainly been below average for the last several days.
It looks like we can chalk up another below average day for Sunday, too.
Our cool air was replenished yesterday by a passing front, setting the stage for another unseasonably cool day. After starting the morning with temperatures as low as the mid to upper 40s, daytimes highs will struggle to get much past 70 degrees. Most spots should see temperatures peak around 73 this afternoon, which would be about 7 degrees below our average for this time of year.
Along with the cooler weather, we'll continue to enjoy sunny and dry conditions. The atmosphere is now even more moisture starved than it was yesterday, so our rain chance will be at zero. As a result of the dry air, humidity levels will stay very low through the day.
Our winds will be pretty light today, blowing out of the north northeast at 5 mph, so today won't be one of the days where the breeze makes the air feel 5-10 degrees colder.
Temperatures won't be as chilly tonight, but most of us will still cool down into the low to mid 50s.
By Monday, our winds will start to make the transition from north to south, bringing in more moisture and warmth. A decent warming trend will begin Monday as highs rebound into the upper 70s, and by Tuesday daytime temperatures should reach the low 80s.
We'll notice more puffy, fair-weather clouds next week as more moisture flows in, but rain chances will continue to stay quite low. There's a chance we could see a few showers develop late Tuesday as a weak front slides in, but we're only looking at rain chances around 20%.
The second half of next week will be very pleasant with highs close to 80 and lows around 60.

COLORECTAL CANCER, IT'S SOMETIMES CALLED A SILENT KILLER. BY THE TIME A PERSON STARTS FEELING PAIN, THE DISEASE IS USUALLY IN A LATE STAGE.
DR. NICK SHARMA/GASTROENTEROLOGIST
RUNS:
6:09 Colon cancer is the third commonest cancer diagnosed in this country and the second commonest killer of cancer of men and women in this country.
THAT STATISTIC SAYS TWO THINGS. FIRST: A LOT OF PEOPLE, WELL OVER A QUARTER MILLION A YEAR IN THIS COUNTRY, ARE BEING DIAGNOSED. AND SECONDLY: COLORECTAL CANCER IS PROVING FATAL IN MANY CASES, KILLING MORE PEOPLE THAN BREAST CANCER. WHEN IT COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED THROUGH EARLY SCREENING
DR. NICK SHARMA/GASTROENTEROLOGIST
RUNS:
2:41 Colon cancer arises out of colon polyps which are benign. When we screen, we're looking for colon polyps. And if we can remove colon polyps we can hopefully prevent colon cancer.
AMY OSHIER/REPORTING
RUNS:
The colonoscopy is a game-changer in this disease. In a single procedure, doctors can look into your colon with a camera that detect lesions then remove them for biopsy. All in under an hour.
DR. NICK SHARMA/GASTROENTEROLOGIST
RUNS:
4:39 We introduce the scope into your colon. It's a flexible scope that has channels, a light channel, a water channel, a suction channel, and a channel that allows us to introduce instruments through the colonoscope to remove these polyps.
AS WE AGE, THE RISK OF COLON CANCER DOUBLES EVERY DECADE, WHICH IS WHY A SCREENINGS ARE RECOMMENDED BEGINNING AT AGE 50. EARLIER IF YOU HAVE A RELATIVE WITH THE DISEASE.
DR. NICK SHARMA/GASTROENTEROLOGIST
RUNS:
:16 Family history, puts you at a much higher risk category so you want to be screened at age 40.
SOME PEOPLE REPORT A CHANGE IN BOWEL HABITS, SUDDEN WEIGHT LOSS OR ANEMIA. THESE CAN BE SYMPTOMS OF COLON CANCER. SO IT'S WORTH HAVING A CONVERSATION WITH YOUR DOCTOR, TO RULE OUT THIS SILENT KILLER. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER.

Crime Stoppers segment for 11/24/12 TRT: 1:55
A spray of gunfire in a small Fort Myers neighborhood has residents - and police - seeking answers in the murder of one man and the shootings of two others in broad daylight - just a rocks throw from a crowded school.
Det. Dennis Keen - "A group of young men were literally walking down the street, and as they begin to walk through this footpath into their neighborhood, neighbors described several shots being fired from behind them here in the roadway."
Not realizing they were being ambushed, the gunshots hit all three men - killing 20 year old Sharod Hayes just steps from his home. Also shot was his younger brother, Keamon, who witnessed his brothers murder, and their friend 18 year old Joshwan Hamilton.
Det. Keen - "It wasn't just one. They were trying to shoot everyone in the group, it appears."
An immediate canvas of Dupree Street brought forth some information, but not enough to ID the multiple shooters. Now, police are turning to the community for their help in tracking down a killer who's still at large.
Det. Keen - There's probably people right here on his block who knew who those guys were who jumped out and started shooting at these young men."
Trish Routte: It's important to remember that a mother lost one son, and nearly another, that fatal afternoon. That's why we're encouraging anyone with information on these violent offenders to come forward… before another parent has to receive the life changing news that their child has been killed.
The other lingering question is why the men were shot at. Detectives say this wasn't a random act of violence, but rather a targeted hit.
Det. Keen - "There had been some problems in the neighborhood in the past, but they're not sure why this happened."
Detective Dennis Keen with the Fort Myers Police Department said that despite the trickle of information they have received about the November 30th shooting, there's much more information out there that they absolutely need to have.
Det. Keen - "Some of the neighbors have come forward and given us some pieces of information and we would really like to reach out to our community. We're only as good as the community we serve, and the help we get from them."
For Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers, I'm Trish Routte.

FORECAST OPEN

BENEATH THE CAVERNOUS DOME OF BETH SHOLOM'S MAIN SANCTUARY, LASERS ARE BEAMING. MAPPING THE STRUCTURE… TO DIGITALLY PRESERVE ITS SPLENDOR FOR THE FUTURE.
"We start to collection hundreds of millions of points referencing every inch of the building."
TYPICALLY USED TO DOCUMENT CRIME SCENES AND ACCIDENTS, THE FORENSIC LASERS PLOT VIRTUAL POINTS TO CREATE A 3D BLUEPRINT OF THE HISTORIC FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT DESIGNED SYNAGOGUE WITH EXTREME DETAIL - BOTH INSIDE AND OUT.
"This cloud of points that is the result here goes every angle, every facet, every etching… and it'll actually differentiate somewhat with the color in the building as well."
THE RESULT: A COMPLETE DIGITAL MODEL OF THE BUILDING THAT CAN BE USED TO AID IN REPAIRS OF DAMAGE CAUSED BY DISASTERS AND TO HELP FIND NORMAL WEAR.
"It gives us a baseline of where the dome is and how it's performing and we can look at it overtime and see if its flexed, moved, bowed or done anything we wouldn't expect it to do."
"Once that scanner is complete, he employs that high definition camera and takes 360 photographs."
THE MODELING WILL ALSO SERVE A SECOND PURPOSE… OFFERING VIRTUAL TOURS TO VISITORS WHO MAY NEVER GET THE CHANCE TO MARVEL AT WRIGHT'S VISION IN PERSON. THE PRESERVATION NON-PROFIT CYARK FACILITATES THESE MAPPINGS AT HISTORIC SITES ALL OVER THE WORLD.
"They'll be able to spin the building around, interact with it, take measurements from it, cut sections through it and that'll all be online and available to them."
OPENING BETH SHOLOM'S DOORS TO THE EVERYONE… NO MATTER WHERE THEY LIVE.

CYARK WILL PROCESS ALL OF THE DATA OVER THE NEXT ONE TO TWO MONTHS AND THEN CREATE A VIRTUAL HOME FOR BETH SHOLOM ON ITS WEBSITE.
