BOEHNER VS OBAMA-PKG

The Democrats have yet to get serious about real spending cuts.

HOUSE SPEAKER JOHN BOEHNER SUMMED UP THE REPUBLICANS' RESPONSE TO THE WHITE HOUSE PLAN FOR AVOIDING THE "FISCAL CLIFF". SPECIFICS WERE REVEALED THURSDAY. THE PLAN CALLS FOR ONE-POINT-SIX TRILLION DOLLARS IN TAX INCREASES AND REFORMS. IT LEAVES CHANGES TO MEDICARE AND OTHER GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS TO BE FIGURED OUT NEXT YEAR. THE G-O-P SAYS IT NEEDS THOSE ANSWERS NOW.

I've made clear that we've put real concessions on the line by putting revenues on the table right up front. Unfortunately many Democrats continue to rule out sensible spending cuts that must be part of any significant agreement that will reduce our deficit.

BOEHNER SAID HE'D BE WILLING TO NEGOTIATE TAX REFORM NEXT YEAR. BUT DEMOCRATS--AND SOME REPUBLICANS-- ARE PUSHING FOR THE HOUSE TO IMMEDIATELY PASS A SENATE BILL THAT WOULD KEEP TAXES FROM RISING ON MIDDLE CLASS AMERICANS IN JANUARY.

"The wealthy are going to have to start paying their fair share of taxes. And I am happy to report to you what you already know. Is that more and more Republicans are catching on to that fact."

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-CLIP

Return to index of stories...

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

From today through the upcoming weekend, our weather will stay under the influence of a large area of high pressure, offering us mix of sun and clouds along with comfortably warm temperatures during the day and cool conditions at night.

The strong flow around the high pressure cell to our north will keep the easterly breeze pretty stiff for the next few days. Winds will generally range from 10-15 mph with gusts getting as high as 25 mph.

One thing we won't see very much of around here for the next several days is rain. Overall, our rain chance from today through the weekend will stay around 10% or less, but it's not out of the realm of possibilities to get a few passing sprinkles during the afternoon.

While rain will be pretty hard to come by today, clouds will not. In fact, there could be periods today when we have more clouds than sun; there's actually a very weak weather system passing through the area, which is why we expect the extra cloud cover. The weekend shouldn't be as cloudy as today, but we'll still have a fair share of patchy fair-weather clouds.

Our temperatures from today through most of next week will stay very seasonable, if not just a couple degrees above average. The average high for this time of year is 79, and the average low is 60. That's exactly where temperatures will be for our Friday. After starting the morning with temperatures in the upper 50s and lower 60s, we'll end up in the upper 70s and low 80s during the afternoon. Temperatures over the weekend might be just a couple notches warmer with daytime highs around 82.

Don't expect any dramatic swings in our temperatures next week, either. We're tracking a cool front that will make an approach toward North Florida by mid week, but models hint at this front being too weak to bring much of a change to Southwest Florida. As a result, our forecast will stay pretty consistent through next week. We'll continue to have partly cloudy skies, highs close to 80, and very low rain chances. Return to index of stories...

This might look like fun--U.S. customs officers BLOWING BUBBLES with these

colorful TOYS. But the work is deadly serious and might save your child's

life.

Thursday authorites were TESTING this toy car in a New Jersey warehouse--

right out of the box-- for lead contamination.

CUSTOMS OFFICIAL SOT: " you see on the red part it says fail" / "It's

showing that there is an excessively high content of lead in these rubber

tires, so that's something that children could ingest and that would be

harmful to their development."

This year, Customs Officials and the Consumer Product Safety Commission have

blocked record amounts of overseas shipments bound for toy stores near you

-- seizing more than 2 million toys and children products.

AGUILAR SOT: Parents, grandparents, families please be vigilant and think

safety as you shop. "

Dolls and action figures, toy guns and cars---the prime gifts that should

bring holiday cheer are often among the most dangerous items. Some have

electrical or choking hazards. Others sharp edges.

And lead contamination is a growing concern.

In some cases, the lead levels are 1,000 TIMES HIGHER THAN U.S. FEDERAL

STANDARDS ALLOW.

CUSTOMS OFFICIAL SOT: There are toys that get through customs and end up on

toy shelves, but we also send people out to do retail sweeps

What can you do to protect your child? Examine the toy closely for possible

choking, and electrical hazards.

ATLANTA AIRPORT WORKERS - POOR WINNERS?

INSIDE A SECURE LOCATION SEVERAL WORKERS REPORTEDLY THREW EGGS AT A BUS CARRYING MEMBERS OF THE NEW ORLEANS SAINTS FOOTBALL TEAM.

"He said, I heard a crack noise, but everything was happening so fast."

INVESTIGATORS AT ATLANTA'S HARTSFIELD INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT BELIEVE THREE OR FOUR EGGS WERE THROWN - BUT THEY STILL DON'T KNOW WHO DID IT.

ALMOST IMMEDIATELY SAINTS PLAYERS TOOK TO TWITTER.

BACKUP QUARTERBACK CHASE DANIEL POSTED, "WOW, AS WE'RE BOARDING BUSES ON THE TARMAC AT ATLANTA AIRPORT, WE START GETTING EGGS THROWN AT US BY AIRPORT WORKERS! GUESS THEY DO HATE US!" Return to index of stories...

COULD THE ACCUSED MASTERMIND OF THE 9/11 ATTACKS - AND MORE THAN A HUNDRED OTHER TERROR DETAINEES- BE MOVED FROM GUANTANAMO BAY, CUBA TO PRISONS IN THE U-S?

THERE'S A NEW PUSH BY AN INFLUENTIAL SENATOR TO SHUT DOWN THE FACILITY.

BRIAN TODD REPORTS. Return to index of stories...

GITMO SUSPECT-PKG

HE SITS IN A CELL - SOME 500-MILES FROM AMERICAN SHORES.

KHALID SHEIKH MOHAMMED, ACCUSED MASTERMIND OF 9-11, COULD BE A STEP CLOSER TO RESIDING ON THE VERY SOIL HE ALLEGEDLY CONSPIRED TO ATTACK.

A NEWLY-RELEASED G-A-O REPORT SAYS MILITARY AND FEDERAL CIVILIAN PRISONS INSIDE THE U-S WOULD NEED SEVERAL OPERATIONAL CHANGES.IF DETAINEES LIKE MOHAMMED WERE TO BE TRANSFERRED FROM GUANTANAMO BAY, CUBA, INTO THE U-S.

BUT TO SENATOR DIANNE FEINSTEIN, CHAIRWOMAN OF THE SELECT INTELLIGENCE COMMITTEE, THE REPORT SHOWS THAT ".IF THE POLITICAL WILL EXISTS, WE COULD FINALLY CLOSE GUANTANAMO WITHOUT IMPERILING OUR NATIONAL SECURITY."

THE REPORT SAYS THERE ARE ABOUT TWO-THOUSAND STATE, FEDERAL AND LOCAL PRISONS THAT COULD BE SUITABLE FOR THOSE DANGEROUS DETAINEES.AND SIX MILITARY FACILITIES.

"Certainly the most likely place that the prisoners would be sent would be the maximum security military prison at Ft. Leavenworth Kansas. That is set up for maximum security. There have never been any escapes. That's the most likely."

SOME CIVILIAN SUPER-MAX FACILITIES INSIDE THE U-S ALREADY HOUSE WELL-KNOWN CONVICTED TERRORISTS, LIKE KHALID SHEIKH MOHAMMED'S NEPHEW, 1993 WORLD TRADE CENTER BOMBER RAMZI YOUSEF.

STANDUP: "But Senator Feinstein is running into staunch opposition here on Capitol Hill where Republicans passed a law, banning the transfer of detainees from Guantanamo onto U-S soil."

G-O-P CONGRESSMAN FRANK WOLF IS CHAIRMAN OF A SUBCOMMITTEE DEALING WITH FUNDING FOR THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT.

Brian:

"But you would then give him all the constitutional advantages of being an American citizen. You would then have security provisions to bring him here. Then you give him years and years of a show trial whereby he could do things- and the 9/11 families think this is a very very bad idea."

AMONG THE CHANGES AT U-S FACILITIES THAT WOULD NEED TO TAKE PLACE TO BRING MOHAMMED AND OTHER DETAINEES TO AMERICA, ACCORDING TO THE G-A-O:

THE RISK TO THE AMERICAN PUBLIC WOULD HAVE TO BE MINIMIZED.

SOME POTENTIAL MILITARY JAILS ARE ON BASES CLOSE TO THE PUBLIC.

IDENTITIES OF THE PERSONNEL WORKING WITH THE PRISONERS WOULD NEED TO BE KEPT SECRET.

MILITARY PRISONERS BY LAW HAVE TO BE KEPT SEPARATE FROM FOREIGN NATIONALS.

"It seems to me that the likely result is status quo. These people are here in Guantanamo now, and they'll be here in Guantanamo four-years later." Return to index of stories...

WEATHER-WX WALL
