A PHOTO SHOWING EXTREME KINDNESS IS GAINING MOMENTUM AROUND THE COUNTRY.
A POLICE OFFICER IN NEW YORK COMES TO THE AID OF A HOMELESS MAN.
STEPHANIE GOSK TAKES A LOOK.
Return to index of stories...
New Yorkers don't necessarily have the best reputation.
But this photo may shatter some misconceptions.NYPD Officer Larry Deprimo giving new boots to a barefoot homeless man on a cold November night.
Jennifer Foster, a tourist from Arizona, couldn't resist taking the picture.
This officer sat down next to him, took his gloves off of his hands and proceeded to help the man put socks and shoes on his feet/This man's face lit up like it was Christmas and like he had just been given literally a million dollars
Officer DePrimo was on counter terrorism patrol that night
It was freezing. the first thing I thought was "This is absolutely unacceptable." So I went up to him and I said "Where are your socks or shoes or anything?"
The shoe store was right there. Jose Cano was on shift.
I worked in the city for about 10 years and no one's really sort of taken that sort of initiative
Cano cut Deprimo a deal on waterproof winter boots. The officer paid with his own money.
I keep the receipt in my pocket vest because I think it's an important reminder that some people have it worse
This was definitely selfless service just an act of human kindness and he ahd no intention of receiving any credit for it.
And perhaps that is why the photo has gone viral. more than 430,000 likes on Facebook.and all over twitter.
"NYPD Officer Larry DePrimo, I salute you."
".a reminder of what protect and serve is supposed to mean"
In this city, they are called New York's finest, Officer De Primo is a good reason why.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
From today through the upcoming weekend, our weather will stay under the influence of a large area of high pressure, offering us mix of sun and clouds along with comfortably warm temperatures during the day and cool conditions at night.
The strong flow around the high pressure cell to our north will keep the easterly breeze pretty stiff for the next few days. Winds will generally range from 10-15 mph with gusts getting as high as 25 mph.
One thing we won't see very much of around here for the next several days is rain. Overall, our rain chance from today through the weekend will stay around 10% or less, but it's not out of the realm of possibilities to get a few passing sprinkles during the afternoon.
While rain will be pretty hard to come by today, clouds will not. In fact, there could be periods today when we have more clouds than sun; there's actually a very weak weather system passing through the area, which is why we expect the extra cloud cover. The weekend shouldn't be as cloudy as today, but we'll still have a fair share of patchy fair-weather clouds.
Our temperatures from today through most of next week will stay very seasonable, if not just a couple degrees above average. The average high for this time of year is 79, and the average low is 60. That's exactly where temperatures will be for our Friday. After starting the morning with temperatures in the upper 50s and lower 60s, we'll end up in the upper 70s and low 80s during the afternoon. Temperatures over the weekend might be just a couple notches warmer with daytime highs around 82.
Don't expect any dramatic swings in our temperatures next week, either. We're tracking a cool front that will make an approach toward North Florida by mid week, but models hint at this front being too weak to bring much of a change to Southwest Florida. As a result, our forecast will stay pretty consistent through next week. We'll continue to have partly cloudy skies, highs close to 80, and very low rain chances.

We're starting out our list this week with a man who's been arrested an unbelievable 37 times before and now, he's on the fast track back to the familiar setting of the Collier County Jail. Ronald Ankney currently faces charges of violating terms of his state probation for driving with a revoked license - as a result of three DUIs in 10 years. And with all those arrests on his rap sheet, he's definitely been a busy man. Among those 37 bookings are multiple counts of battery, and violating restraining orders, grand theft, robbery, escape, fraud, the possession of marijuana and meth and a long list of other illegal actions. This 32 year old fugitive may be working under the table as a contractor or carpenter. He has strong ties to Naples, so chances are that he hasn't gone too far. All we need is that one tip to give him a new home for the holidays.
Also on the run in Collier County is Aldrice Cummings, who police say ran over a man with his car, then turned around and shot him in the face earlier this week. The incident occurred in Immokalee, where the victim was sitting on his bicycle in front of a convenience store. That's when witnesses say Cummings attacked the victim, then fled in a silver Buick which was later ditched a few blocks away. Cummings, a local rapper who goes by the name of Freezie, is definitely no stranger to a life of crime. The 29 year old has already been sent to state prison twice, following convictions for cocaine possession, fleeing and eluding officers and battery on a public safety official. He has strong ties to the Immokalee area, but has been in hiding since Monday's shooting. And just a reminder that if any of Cummings' friends or family are helping him hide from the law, they too could find themselves under arrest.
Next up is yet another menace to society, Kian Johnston, who's wanted on grand theft charges out of Lee County. At the age of 27, Johnston is a very familiar face to deputies, after committing a string of crimes in both Lee and Charlotte Counties. He's a registered convicted felon, who's been arrested for several gun related and drug dealing charges. He's also been incarcerated twice for child neglect - including a time when he drove while highly intoxicated with an infant and a two year old in the car. Witnesses said he was driving erratically, hitting two cars and running red lights - all while the 2 year old was dangling out of the back seat window. Johnston is a native of Jamaica, who goes by the street name of "Whizo." He was last known to be living in North Fort Myers, and is likely still around town - trying to stay as far off the radar as possible.
And rounding out our list of hooligans is Darron Rice, a violent offender wanted for violating his probation following an arrest for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. This 20 year old has already established himself as a gun toting felon who doesn't have much affection for law enforcement - or even simply abiding by the basic laws of society. Known on the streets as "Run Run," Rice is a young man who should be considered armed and dangerous. He is 5'5", 140 pounds and has several tattoos, including the name Roshunda inked on his right arm and wrist, and two faces on his right shoulder. Upon his arrest, Rice will be held without bond in the Lee County Jail.

FOOTBALL PRACTICE AT HIGH SCHOOL… SOPHOMORE LUKE VAN GINKEL IS THE KICKER FOR THE TOP RANKED TEAM…
AND ON THE SIDELINES, WATCHING HIS EVERY MOVE, IS HIS LIFESAVER… ASTRO.
ASTRO IS A SERVICE DOG.
HIS JOB. TO SENSE WHEN LUKE'S BLOOD SUGAR DIPS TO A DANGEROUS LEVEL.
LUKE HAS TYPE 1 DIABETES. HIS BLOOD SUGAR CAN FALL WITHOUT WARNING, ESPECIALLY WHEN HE IS ASLEEP, AND IF IT GETS TOO LOW HE COULD DIE IF HE DOESN'T ADDRESS IT QUICKLY…
THAT'S WHERE ASTRO COMES IN.
"I was asleep, he started whining a lot, and woke me up, and I told my mom I was feeling low. And she tested me I turned out to be low."
ASTRO HAS BEEN TRAINED TO ALERT LUKE AND HIS FAMILY, WHEN HE SENSES LUKE'S BLOOD SUGAR IS LOW.
THIS IS WHERE ASTRO GETS HIS TRAINING, ALONG WITH OTHER SERVICE DOGS.
AT CANINE HOPE FOR DIABETICS, THE DOGS ARE TRAINED TO BE OBEDIENT AND TO BE ALERT. FROM THE TIME THEY ARE PUPPIES, THEY ARE TAUGHT TO RECOGNIZE THE LOW BLOOD SUGAR SCENT.
"It's still being investigated, the thought at this point is that the dog can smell the chemical change in the body, that's a result of fluctuating blood sugars. You smell the scent. here's a treat. So it's positive reinforcement when they smell that."
FRANK WISNESKI SAYS HIS SERVICE DOG MAJOR SAVED HIS DAUGHTER'S LIFE, BY ALERTING THEM LAST CHRISTMAS THAT SHE WAS ABOUT TO HAVE A DANGEROUS EPISODE.
"This dog gave us a 45 minute to an hour head start at which point she could have very easily slipped into a coma."
AND SO LUKE KEEPS ASTRO AT HIS SIDE, AND AT HIS GAMES.
HE EXPECTS ASTRO TO BE HIS COMPANION, FOR A VERY LONG TIME.
"He's like my buddy, my best friend. He goes with me everywhere he's always with me. He's gonna be with me through my whole high school football career, hopefully go to college with me too."
