WEATHER-WX CENTER

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

If you liked Saturday, you'll love Sunday because our weather will pretty much stay in cruise control as we close out the weekend.

Overall, it's going to be a very comfortable day for us across Southwest Florida. Humidity will stay pleasantly low, and we'll have a refreshing breeze out of the east with some gusts approaching 20 mph

We'll kick things off this morning with a mostly clear sky and temperatures near 60º. Daytime highs will run slightly above average this afternoon with temperatures projected to climb back into the low 80s. Blue skies and sunshine will dominate for the first half of the day, and then we'll notice some patchy, fair-weather clouds mixing in with sunshine during the afternoon.

Rain chances continue to stay incredibly low, but it's possible we'll see a few stray sprinkles on the radar today.

Tonight looks very comfortable with temperatures cooling to near 60° with only a few passing fog. It's possible for some patchy fog to develop early Monday morning, but for the most part, visibility looks good.

EVER GET THAT DIZZY, QUEASY FEELING IN THE PIT OF YOUR STOMACH?

PKG:

IF YOUR WORLD IS SPINNING, YOU'RE NOT ALONE. MILLIONS OF AMERICANS SUFFER FROM VERTIGO AND IT'S PUTTING THEM OFF-BALANCE.

DAWN ROOT/VESTIBULAR SPECIALIST

RUNS:

3:30 Especially our older population. They'll also have a lot of anxiety, fear of falling, because of the symptoms. They don't want to move because when they move they get dizzy.

VERTIGO IS THE MOST COMMON TYPE OF DIZZINESS IN SENIORS. AND ONE OF THE TOP REASONS THEY FALL. SLIPS AND FALLS ARE NOTHING TO TAKE LIGHTLY, THEY'RE THE LEADING CAUSE OF INJURY DEATH IN THE ELDERLY.

NATHALIE GRONDIN/PHYSICAL THERAPIST

RUNS:

2:07 Mortality rates can be very high. In fact only about a quarter of the people get back to their previous activities and lifestyle where they can live independently again.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

So what causes the spinning and can you stop it? The key to vertigo is all in our heads. We all have crystals deep in our inner ear and sometimes they get loose.

DAWN ROOT/VESTIBULAR SPECIALIST

RUNS:

6:03 So when the patient moves their head in certain positions, the crystals will move within the canal, and then that will create the symptoms of vertigo.

THESE ODD-LOOKING MANEUVERS CAN PUT THOSE CRYSTALS BACK IN PLACE, ELIMINATING THE DIZZINESS.

DAWN ROOT/VESTIBULAR SPECIALIST

RUNS:

2:11 The goal of therapy is to move the patient in certain positions to move those crystals along the canal and then back out into the central area where the body will then break them down and reabsorb them.

WITH THE PROPER TREATMENT, IT'S POSSIBLE TO RECLAIM YOUR BALANCE.

NATHALIE GRONDIN/PHYSICAL THERAPIST

RUNS:

:31 Balance is so important because it's part of our every day life.

SHOPPERS AT A FORT MYERS MALL WERE SHOCKED WHEN A RAIN OF GUNFIRE SPRAYED THE AIR, PUTTING MANY INNOCENT BYSTANDERS IN HARMS WAY.

ONE MAN WAS KILLED AS A RESULT OF THE RAMPAGE, AND A YEAR LATER, THE PERSON RESPONSIBLE HAS YET TO BE BROUGHT TO JUSTICE.

TRISH ROUTTE WITH CRIME STOPPERS HAS THE STORY. Return to index of stories...

CRIME STOPPERS-PKG

On one of the busiest shopping nights of the entire year, a gunman decides to put hundreds of people's lives at risk, firing nearly 50 bullets within seconds at a man literally running for his life.

Det. Dennis Keen - "It's very unfortunate to lose one person, much less having a massive shooting, which was the possibility of happening."

On the Friday night before Christmas, Fort Myers resident Thomas Goodman was among hundreds doing some last minute holiday shopping at the Edison Mall. On his way to his car, with bags still in hand, an unknown gunman opened fire on Goodman, spraying a rapid fire stream of bullets as he unsuccessfully ran for shelter.

Det. Keen - "There were other shoppers just trying to get out of the way so they didn't get shot."

Trish Routte: Detectives say the shooter used an assault rifle, with several bullets striking Goodman. Though police tried to revive him just feet from the mall's south entrance, it appeared the gunman achieved exactly what he set out to do that night - to kill Thomas Goodman.

Det. Keen - "There were multiple shots fired at this person and several vehicles were hit, but fortunately no one else was killed."

Detectives say they absolutely don't believe Goodman's death was a random act of violence… but rather one in which Goodman was clearly an intended target. They also think there are people out there who know more than they're sharing with police.

Det. Keen - "We believe that there are people in our community who know a lot about this and may have even seen things that other people haven't called in about. We are hoping they will call and do the right thing."

Between the 9-1-1 calls and information from the crowds of people unintentionally in the line of fire, police have some leads they're piecing together. However, it's going to take a community effort to identify and track down the guilty party, and to make sure they're not getting away with murder.

Det. Keen - "We do have a lot of people in the community who aren't afraid to step up and say 'you know what? This is nonsense and we're not going to put up with it.'"

And just one anonymous call could make all the difference in making our community safer.

For Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers, I'm Trish Routte. Return to index of stories...

DAVIS' FATHER DOESN'T BELIEVE THAT.

BUT, UNLIKE SOME CRITICS, HE ALSO DOESN'T THINK HIS SON'S SKIN COLOR PLAYED A ROLE IN THE SHOOTING. Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

SCRIPT:

SEVEN CARS ON THE TRAIN TRAVELING FROM CAMDEN DERAILED AT 7 AM FRIDAY. 4

CARS CARRYING VINYL CHLORIDE WENT INTO THE WATER.

ONE WAS PIERCED AND RELEASED VAPORS OF MORE THAN 12,500 GALLONS OF THE

CHEMICAL THAT IN HIGH DOSES CAN BE TOXIC.

SATURDAY WE LEARNED OF NEW PRELIMINARY DETAILS RELEASED BY THE NATIONAL

TRANSPORTATION SAFETY BOARD ---

INCLUDING INTERVIEWS WITH THE TRAIN'S CONDUCTER, ENGINEER AND THE DISPATCHER

.

THE TWO MAN CREW ARRIVED AT A RED LIGHT ON THE PAULSBORO BRIDGE, THE

CONDUCTOR GOT OUT AND FOUND NOTHING WRONG.

Deborah Hersman, Chairman NTSB

The engineer tried to key in the signal three times but he did not get a

green light or proceed signal, he called dispatch over the radio and

received approval to cross the bridge and pass that red signal.

SEVERAL CARS MADE IT OVER, THE BRIDGE COLLAPSED AND THE EMERGENCY BRAKES

WERE APPLIED.

AGENCIES FOCUSING ON THE CLEAN-UP ASPECT CONTINUE TO MONITOR AIR QUALITY.

RESIDENTS IN A 12 BLOCK RADIUS HAD TO BE EVACUATED.

LARRY HAJNA/NJDEP

Most of the results have been in the non detect range or slightly elevated

range, we don't believe it will have any acute health impacts on people.

According to the coast guard captain the first priority is to get the

remaining vinyl chloride out of the damaged car, the 2nd priority is to get

the remaining cars out of the water.

THE COAST GUARD COULD NOT GIVE A RANGE OF HOW LONG THE CLEAN UP COULD TAKE.

IN THE MEANTIME THE NTSB ALSO REQUESTED CONRAIL'S INSPECTIONS OF THE BRIDGE

WHICH THEY OWN AND OPERATE. THEY ARE ALSO INVESTIGATING IF HURRICANE SANDY

CONTRIBUTED TO DAMAGE. Return to index of stories...
