IT'S FACE-TO-FACE ENCOUNTERS LIKE THIS THAT HAS PEOPLE CONCERNED.
MORE AND MORE BLACK BEARS ARE ROAMING NEIGHBORHOODS IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA.
GOOD EVENING, I'M KELLIE BURNS.
AND I'M PETER BUSCH.
FWC SAYS THE BEARS ARE GETTING TOO COMFORTABLE AROUND PEOPLE.
THAT'S WHY OFFICERS ARE MAKING A SPECIAL TRIP TO SOUTHWEST FLORIDA THIS WEEK.
NBC2'S KELLY CRESWELL IS LIVE IN LEHIGH ACRES-- WHERE SIGHTINGS HAVE SKYROCKETED.
KELLY.

Fwc says bearsighting calls have skyrocketed in Lehigh acres. The main reason--trash being left out, encouraging bears to get too close for comfort for residents who live in bear country.
Return to index of stories...
Marge Macaulay wasn't phased at first when she saw a black furry creature roaming her backyard.
Take sound
Marge
"I thought it was a kid in a costume because it was Halloween and then this thing got up and you could tell it was definitely not a kid in costume when it started walking and it ripples and all that. It was definitely a big bear."
A few weeks ago--marge's neighbor caught this bear chowing down on birdseed in her backyard.
After seeing one too many bears, marge alerted FWC.
Take sound
Marge
"They told me to keep pots and pans on my pitch when I'm out there because they said bang them, they don't like loud noises. But I prefer to go in my house and close the door."
Nats--" it's much easier for bears to get their calories from rich human food sources--garbage, pet food and bird feeders"
FWC sent this informational DVD to marge informing her that she does live in bear country and if food is readily available--bears will associate communities with an easy lunch. And that's becoming a problem in Lehigh as bears are migrating through. They can smell food a mile away--so if its sitting out--they'll stop and eat. But if there is no food for their taking--they'll keep moving on.
Take sound
Marge
"Snakes, raccoons, armadillos--that is one thing, but bears are another so I don't care to see him again, I hope he moved on."

FWC will be holding a press conference in Lehigh Friday to inform residents the spike in bear sightings and to teach residents what to do, like making sure your trash is locked up or bear proof so the animals continue to move on and stay out of their back yards. Live on Lehigh kc NBC2.

THIS IS JUST THE FIRST ROUND OF RESULTS.
BUT EVEN THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION WARNS THEY'RE STILL GETTING THE HANG OF THE GRADING SYSTEM.
THIS YEAR- THE LET DISTRICTS GRADE THEMSELVES,
BUT NEXT YEAR THEY'LL SET THE STANDARDS.
Return to index of stories...
THE GRADES ARE IN.
AND THEY'RE NOT FOR THE STUDENTS.
FEA- 17:36:17-19 it's devestating for a lot of people
THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION JUST RELEASED GRADES,
BASED ON 3 CATEGORIES-
Kathy Hebda, deputy chancellor for educator quality 30:12 the 3 main criteria are performance of students, instructional practice for teachers, or leadership practice for administrators and professional or job responsibilities 20
THE DISTRICTS GRADE THEMSELVES, THEN SUBMIT THEIR EVALUATIONS TO THE STATE.
HERE'S HOW THEY BREAK DOWN IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA.
CHARLOTTE'S CLASSROOM TEACHERS ARE 100 PERCENT EFFECTIVE ACCORDING TO THE EVAULATION.
COLLIER HAS 4 PERCENT HIGHLY EFFECTIVE,
95 PERCENT EFFECTIVE,
AND LESS THAN 1 PERCENT THAT NEED IMPROVEMENT,
AS FOR LEE COUNTY-
9 PERCENT OF TEACHERS ARE HIGHLY EFFECTIVE,
88 EFFECTIVE,
1 PERCENT NEED IMPROVEMENT.
STATISTICS PARENTS SAY THEY'LL CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING SCHOOLS.
17:42 we were new to the county coming in so it was really important for me to really just get the base of what her values were in the classroom and what she was going to do to instil my sons education from now until he leaves gulf elementary
LEE COUNTY SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS DR. JOSEPH BURKE RELEASED THIS STATEMENT,
SAYING " We will continue to review this preliminary information from the Florida Department of Education as we work to improve our processes to ensure we have highly qualified staff across our District."
BUT THE TEACHER'S UNION WARNS THIS GRADING SYSTEM FAILS,
SINCE IT RELIES SO HEAVILY ON TEST SCORES.
17:39:09 I want parents to know this is a weak process to evaluate a teachers worth 19

improving the image especially at those beach accesses where people are coming to enjoy, that's definitely a priority
Over the last year, volunteers evaluated conditions at all 25 beach access points and came up with goals, one of those is to reduce the number of signs
if we could get those signs consolidated, get the main points across and people can get on with their enjoyment of the beach
LEE COUNTY'S TOURISM DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL DENIED FUNDING ONCE BEFORE--
SO OVERMYER SAYS VOLUNTEERS WILL MEET TOMORROW TO REVISE THEIR PLAN.
let's not get too commercial, that's it

AD LIB WEATHER TEASE
Return to index of stories...
THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
After some sunshine today, the clouds certainly thickened up throughout the afternoon limiting our temperatures to the upper 70s. Through the evening hours, expect mostly cloudy skies to stick around along with the possibility of a stray shower or two as temperatures settle into the lower 70s.
Overnight, the vast majority of us will stay fairly dry under mostly cloudy skies with an isolated shower at best. Lows will settle into the lower 60s here in town, with a few upper 50s deeper inland and across our northern cool spots.
High pressure that has controlled our weather over the last several days continues to break down as a cold front pushes across the deep south. By tomorrow morning, a weak upper level disturbance will make its way across the peninsula and may produce a few widely scattered showers. Rain prospects will remain about 30%, so not everyone will see the rain as most of these will be the hit or miss type.
Once this disturbance exits to the east late Thursday, conditions will begin to dry out a bit for the end of the week with more sunshine and highs remaining in the lower 80s.
Heading into the weekend, we'll keep partly sunny skies in the forecast with the chance of a couple of isolated showers. By early next week, we'll be tracking another cold front moving down the state, which will bring an increase in the cloud cover and perhaps another boost in our rain chances.
Even though our rain prospects will stay slightly higher than normal, our weather pattern will stay fairly consistent with our temperatures staying a few points above the average with partly sunny skies.
