FISCAL CLIFF LATEST-PKG

TODAY PRESIDENT OBAMA PAID A VISIT TO A NORTHERN VIRGINIA FAMILY WHO REACHED

OUT TO THE WHITE HOUSE.CONCERNED ABOUT WHAT HAPPENS TO THEM IF THE NATION

FALLS OVER THE FISCAL CLIFF.

For them to be burdened unnecessarily because Democrats and Republicans aren

't coming together gives you a sense of the real costs.

ONCE AGAIN ,THE PRESIDENT PUSHED CONGRESS TO EXTEND THE MIDDLE CLASS TAX

CUTS - BUT SAID HE WON'T SIGN ANY FISCAL CLIFF DEAL UNLESS THE TAX RATES ON

THE TOP TWO PERCENT OF EARNERS GO UP.AND THAT'S A KEY STICKING POINT IN

THIS STALEMATE.

It's very important that we get this done now. That we don't wait.

YESTERDAY THE PRESIDENT HAD A PHONE CALL WITH HOUSE SPEAKER JOHN BOEHNER -

IT WAS THE FIRST TIME THE TWO HAD SPOKEN IN ABOUT A WEEK.

AND UNUSUAL FOR WASHINGTON - NO LEAKS ABOUT WHAT THEY DISCUSSED!

nothing more to offer except to confirm that there was a phone conversation.

WHICH MAY BE A SIGN THEY'RE SERIOUS ABOUT NEGOTIATING A DEAL IN PRIVATE.

MORE REPUBLICANS ARE BEGINNING TO CONCEDE THE TAX RATE INCREASES ON THE TOP

EARNERS.

BUT AS A CONDITION, THEY'LL PUSH FOR DEEP SPENDING CUTS NEXT YEAR BEFORE

THEY AGREE TO RAISE THE DEBT CEILING AGAIN.

THE WHITE HOUSE SAYS THE DEBT CEILING MUST BE PART OF ANY FISCAL CLIFF DEAL

TO AVOID DAMAGING THE NATION'S CREDIT RATING.

BUT REPUBLICANS SAY THE PRESIDENT IS OVERSTEPPING HIS AUTHORITY.

nats from match

WITH ONE BOY DEFEATING THE OTHER. BUT ON THIS DAY, BOTH OF THESE 12YR OLDS

LEFT THE MAT AS WINNERS--AND TO CALL THIS EXTRAORDINARY DOESN'TEVEN COME

CLOSE.

TAKE ANOTHER LOOK. YOU SEE, JARED STEVENS HAS CEREBRAL PALSY BUT HE DOESN'T

LET THAT STOP HIM: HE WANTS TO WRESTLE.

PHIL/FATHER "He asked coach if he could get on the mat. So that's when we asked the coach, what do we have to do to make that happen?"

HE STARTED OUT PRACTICING.AND THEN

PHIL / FATHERSOT "Next logical question - am I gonna get a match? They were like what do you think dad? I said put him in."

AND SO THEY APPROACHED THE COACH FROM THE OPPOSING TEAM

RANDY STEVENS / FREEDOM MIDDLE SCHOOL WRESTLING COACH

7:27-7:44 /he called me over to the side and said he really wanted to get jared on the mat today and asked me if i had a kid who understood, knows what the world is really like and had a big heart/

ENTER JUSTIN KIEVET , JARED'S COMPETITOR IN HIS FIRST WRESTLING

MATCH

JUSTIN: 1:32-1:36 / I didn't know what to do; 1:06-1:16 I went over to wrestle him and shook his hand and I noticed he couldn't move, so I sat on the mat and pulled him over me and slid under him like that

WITH THE CROWD STANDING, CHEERING -- JARED PINS JUSTIN TO THE MAT IN JUST 18

seconds

HE WINS THE MATCH. AND SPORTS THIS EAR-TO-EAR SMILE

JUSTIN: 4:21-4:28 / he looked at me with a cheerful face and smiled at me, right when the match was over. That made me feel really good

PHIL / DAD "two adjectives that come out of this whole episode is courage and character on both of these guys' parts/

COURAGE, CHARACTER, AND A STUNNING SHOW OF COMPASSION.

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

LIMITED COVERAGE OF SHOWERS

A few showers popped up this afternoon, but many places in southwest Florida were dry again today. Showers fell over Collier, Lee and Hendry counties this afternoon. If you were lucky enough to get some rain, you probably got less than half an inch. Looking at the forecast for the rest of the evening, I will likely be tracking a few more showers past sunset along with clouds moving across the area. Temperatures will drop very slowly into the 60's tonight and land at 60 - 62 tomorrow morning.

The forecast for the next few days is not very clear-cut. As we approach the weekend I can almost guarantee that the warm weather will continue. Highs on Friday, Saturday and Sunday will easily top out above 80 degrees. The 'tricky' part of the forecast through the weekend will be the return of a little more tropical moisture from the southeast. By Saturday and Sunday it looks like there could be enough moisture around to kick off a couple of isolated showers over the weekend. It certainly does not appear to be a big deal, and like the past few days, the showers I'm talking about here would only cover a limited area across southwest Florida.

By next Tuesday it looks like we have a more pronounced front heading to Florida. The models increase the chance for showers both Tuesday and Wednesday next week. Return to index of stories...

NOISY RESTAURANTS-ONCAM

IF YOU LIKE GOING OUT TO DINNER--

YOU MIGHT HAVE NOTICED SOMETHING ABOUT THE RESTAURANT SCENE THESE DAYS.

NOT JUST HOW CROWDED THEY ARE IN SEASON--

BUT THE NOISE!

NBC2's NICK CILETTI LOOKED INTO WHY THEY'RE SO LOUD. Return to index of stories...

NOISY RESTAURANTS-PKG

it is not your daddy's restaurant business anymore. more hard surfaces and open kitchens, fewer tablecloths and curtains, less space between tables and less comfortable chairs.and all that noise!

This is A-Frame, in west L.A.one of the city's loudest.

Owner Roy Choi likes it that way.

"I WANT YOU TO FEEL LIKE YOU, LIKE, ALMOST, LIKE, STUMBLED INTO, LIKE, A HUG. AND THEN WE WRAPPED OURSELVES AROUND YOU."

Given those comparative sound levels, diners are complaining about noise more than anything else except bad service.

Reviewers and restaurant rating sites are now listing noise levels.a 'mini crisis' to Bon Appetit's Andrew Knowlton.

"IT'S INFURIATING SITTING ACROSS.LITERALLY TWO FEET ACROSS FROM SOMEBODY, AND NOT BEING ABLE TO HEAR THEM."

.and restaurant architects like Ralph Gentile-- acknowledging the move to industrial chic design and rooms that feel alive-- are working not to eliminate noise.but to manipulate it.

".MAKING THE COLLECTION OF SOUNDS THAT APPEAR IN THE ROOM TO BE MORE OF A COLLAGE THAT'S PLEASING RATHER THAN A JUMBLE THAT'S NOT."

That's what John Paluski did with his new restaurant, Comal in Berkely's arts district.

"I WANTED THAT SOMEWHAT HOLY GRAIL OF BUZZY BUT CONVERSATIONAL, YOU KNOW."

Here there are sound-absorbing panels disguised as artwork.and duct-liner and unseen fabrics taking the bounce off hard surfaces.

It's a barely noticeable matrix of microphones and speakers that collects the noises of a crowded restaurant and then washes it back out in kind of a soothing white-noise bath.

Still, there are restaurant owners and restaurant goers who like it loud.and for those who complain they just can't talk?

"USUALLY IF THEY'RE SAYING THAT, WE'LL TURN UP THE MUSIC SO WE CAN'T HEAR WHAT THEY'RE SAYING.!"

If I heard him right.I think he was joking.

NICK CILETTI- NBC2. Return to index of stories...
