FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

"More sunshine, stray shower"

An upper level disturbance that brought clouds and widely scattered showers to the area yesterday has finally pushed east of the state. This means we will end the work week on a drier and sunnier note with warmer than average temperatures.

Sunshine will prevail through the late morning hours with mostly to partly sunny skies during the afternoon. With a bit more sunshine across our Southwest Florida skies, temperatures will warm into the low 80s with a cooling seabreeze by the coast. The vast majority of us will stay dry during the day, however with sufficient moisture still in place a stray shower can't be ruled out.

Tonight, skies will remain mostly clear to partly cloudy and lows will be rather mild for this time of year in the mid 60s.

Some tropical moisture looks to return to the area over the weekend with the chance for a stray shower or two each and every afternoon. Temperatures will continue to run warmer than average in the lower to middle 80s with overnight lows in the mid 60s.

Partly sunny skies will remain in the forecast early next week with increasing clouds on Tuesday ahead of an approaching cold front. This front doesn't look to bring any cold air; just more clouds and a boost in our rain prospects. Return to index of stories...

IT'S THE SAME QUESTION JUST ABOUT EVERY STORE WILL ASK AFTER A MAJOR PURCHASE.

DO YOU WANT THE EXTENDED WARRANTY?

THIS NEXT STORY MIGHT HELP YOU DECIDE.

HERE'S CHRIS CLACKUM. Return to index of stories...

WARRANTY OR NOT?-PKG

IT HAS BECOME A RITE OF PASSAGE IN RETAIL. THAT WHEN YOU'VE MADE A BIG-TICKET PURCHASE OF APPLIANCES OR ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT.

.THE NEXT THING THE STORE WANTS TO SELL YOU. IS THE EXTENDED WARRANTY.

"One reason stores push them so hard is that there's just a huge profit margin on them, 50% in some cases, a lot more than they make on the products themselves"

GREG DAUGHERTY LED RESEARCH AT CONSUMER REPORTS ON THE VALUE OF EXTENDED WARRANTIES. AND CONCLUDED. TO JUST SAY NO.

"Even if you do have one and try to use it, sometimes you get a runaround, it might take a long time to get the product repaired. you might find it very hard to take it any place if there's no place near you. So, there are any number of stumbling blocks, even if you do have this coverage and you need to use it"

HE SAYS EXTENDED WARRANTIES ARE OFTEN UNNECESSARY BECAUSE REPUTABLE MANUFACTURERS STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCTS.

"Very often, they will try to fix it even outside of the warranty, just to keep you as a satisfied customer and to protect their brand"

HOMEOWNERS INSURANCE CAN OFFER RIDERS FOR EXTENDED COVERAGE.

.AND HE SAYS DEFINITELY CHECK THE CONTRACT WITH YOUR CREDIT CARD COMPANY.

"Depending on the kind of credit card you have, and we urge consumers to look and make sure, but very often, you will get some sort of extended warranty coverage with a credit card"

ANOTHER ALTERNATIVE HE SAYS IS TO INSURE YOURSELF WITH A REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT FUND IN YOUR BANK ACCOUNT.

TRISH ROUTTE WITH SOUTHWEST FLORIDA CRIME STOPPERS IS HERE WITH A NEW LIST OF BAD PEOPLE. Return to index of stories...

FUGITIVE FRIDAY-5 SS

We're starting off our list with a Collier County man who has a long history of drugs and violence, and could be hiding in plain sight as a human billboard. Alfred Everett, Jr. is wanted for violating his state probation, following an arrest for grand theft. This 27 year old fugitive has amassed a lengthy rap sheet over the years, with jail time for the possession and sale of cocaine, armed robbery, aggravated battery inflicting great bodily harm and fraud, among others. Deputies think Everett may be darting back and forth between Naples and Fort Myers, since he has ties in both areas. He was last known to be working as a plumber and as one of those guys on the street corner who twirls billboards for local businesses. Everett may be using the alias of AJ or Howard Delacey. He is 5'10", 280 pounds, and has a tattoo of the word "Cuz" on his left arm.

Also trying to dodge a legal bullet in Naples is Thomas Ewell, a convicted robber who has made the choice to violate terms of his probation. Over the last few years, Ewell has found himself locked up for drugs, burglary, grand theft, petit theft and unarmed robbery, as well. He's moved around several times in the East and North Naples areas, but also recently had an apartment on Winkler Avenue in Fort Myers. 26 year old Ewell is 5'5", 140 pounds and has a tattoo of the word "Mob" on the right side of his neck.

And in Lee County, deputies are on the hunt for a man they believe broke into a Lehigh Acres home, then stole - among other things - a credit card that was later used to rack up fraudulent charges. David Ruffin stands accused of burglary and fraud for the recent break in, but it's just the latest in a long string of crimes he's been arrested for. Ruffin's first felony arrest was at the young age of just 12, when he was jailed for aggravated battery and armed robbery. Since then, he's amassed 18 more arrests in Lee County for multiple counts of battery, burglary, grand theft, dealing in stolen property, weapons charges and much more. He's also been arrested in Collier, Dade and Leon Counties for violent crimes, including robbery. Ruffin is a registered convicted felon, who may be using the alias of Johnnie Lee Thomas. He was last known to be living in Lehigh and upon his arrest, he will be held without bond in the Lee County Jail.

And rounding out our list this weekend is a repeat drunk driver, James Weaks, wanted for violating his probation after his fourth DUI. This 54 year old fugitive has nine previous arrests in Lee, and several in Brevard County, mostly for drunk driving and driving without a license. Weaks actions has landed him the designation of a registered convicted felon - a title he's definitely earned. Statistics show that the average drunk driver gets behind the wheel while intoxicated an average of 80 times before they're arrested for their first DUI, so with four DUI's on his record, one can only imagine how many times Weaks has done this before… and the likelihood that he's still doing it today - especially with the holiday season kicking into high gear. Weaks was last known to be living in central Fort Myers, and upon his arrest, he will be held without bond. Return to index of stories...

THE ORGANIZERS OF THIS JOB FAIR SAY THE SKILLS EMPLOYEES LEARNED WHILE WORKING AT THE ALEXANDRIA HOLSUM BAKERY MAKE THEM VALUABLE JOB CANDIDATES.

"Manufacturers are the focus of our initiatives and they are what we call the economic drivers so when you lose an economic driver in your community it hurts much worse than just any other business it's really critical because that drives a lot of other activity."

Pretty soon someone will be picking us up, we were great great workers at Holsum and somebody will pick us up here pretty soon."

Lane was driving home with her boyfriend,

after she left the truck - that she

Doctors say Lane has a mild case of

frostbite, but is doing surprisingly well.

DR. VIJAY MAIYA, primary care physician

"She's recovering nicely - 25%'s medical and

75% is going to be emotional."

TAMOXIFEN-CLIP VO IN PLASMA

ON THE MEDICAL FRONT TODAY,

WE'RE TAKING A LOOK AT THE DRUG 'TAMOXIFEN'.

AND HOW NEW RESEARCH COULD CHANGE BREAST CANCER TREATMENT FOR WOMEN.

ANNE MARIE REPORTS. Return to index of stories...

TAMOXIFEN-PKG

THE ATLAS STUDY FOLLOWED NEARLY 7 THOUSAND BREAST CANCER PATIENTS.

THEY TOOK TAMOXIFEN FOR 5-YEARS AND STOPPED. AND COMPARED THEM WITH PATIENTS WHO CONTINUED TAKING THE DRUG FOR FIVE MORE YEARS.

RESEARCHERS SAY PATIENTS WHO COMPLETED A 10-YEAR COURSE HAD A LOWER RECURRENCE RATE, AND FEWER DIED FROM BREAST CANCER.

"This particular study seemed to suggest that if women took Tamoxifen for ten years instead of the standard recommendation for 5 years they decrease their risk of death from one third to one half so that is a pretty significant decrease in the risk of dying it's probably one of the most common. I'm asked a a breast cancer surgeon was women who have just finished their 5 years of Tamoxifen and their question is if 5 years is good. wouldn't ten years be better?"

DR. DUNNINGTON SAYS. THE TAMOXIFEN DOES HAVE SIDE EFFECTS A HIGHER RISK OF DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS OR BLOOD CLOTS IN YOUR LEGS. UTERINE CANCER. STROKE.

EARLIER STUDIES SHOWED IF YOU TOOK TAMOXIFEN LONGER THAN 5 YEARS, YOU INCREASE THE RISK. BUT NOT THE BENEFIT.

"So this is very different information it is worth watching closely to see if other studies can prove this benefit. I believe this is an appropriate time to have a discussion with your physician is there enough evidence to consider lengthening the time of Tamoxifen?" Return to index of stories...
