THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
The warm weather pattern will stay locked in place this weekend, keeping our daytime highs in the 80s and overnight lows in the 60s.
Along with the unseasonably warm weather, we'll be able to talk about something that's been missing from our forecasts for a while: a chance of rain.
Winds will turn more southerly starting today, which will allow for some more tropical moisture to build in over Southwest Florida. The result will be some isolated showers that will develop during the afternoon and evening with the chance of getting a wet close to 30%. Shower movement will be to the northwest, so you'll want to look southeast for any approaching showers today.
Sunday will be a bit of a different story with our rain chances actually going down as our atmosphere becomes more stable. We may see a couple stray showers Sunday afternoon, but for the most part, we'll stay dry.
It's a little surprising that last significant cool front that swept across Southwest Florida came on Thanksgiving weekend. It appears we'll have to wait a while before the next substantial cool spell comes to Southwest Florida.
With the steering flow coming from the south this weekend, temperatures will continue to run well above average. The average high for this time of year is 78°. Our afternoon temperatures through the weekend will be close to the mid 80s across the urban corridor and low 80s along the coast.
Believe it or not, as we look at some of the long-range forecast models, there's no sign of any cooler weather making it to Southwest Florida through the end of next week. In fact, the next cool front that will push into the Florida will run out of gas before making it here, meaning we'll continue seeing the warmer weather for the next several days.
Even though we're not expecting a cool down from the next front, we will get a little more moisture sent our way this upcoming week. As moisture build in from the Gulf of Mexico, we'll notice a couple changes. One, the air will start to feel pretty tropical for this time of year, meaning our humidity levels will shoot up. And two, we'll get a couple opportunities for rain next week, mostly on Tuesday and Wednesday.

IT COULD BE AN HISTORIC RULING FOR THE SUPREME COURT.
THE NATION'S HIGHEST COURT AGREED TO HEAR TWO CASES ON SAME SEX MARRIAGE.
THE FIRST IS CALIFORNIA'S CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT THAT BANS SAME-SEX MARRIAGE.
THE OTHER CASE DEALS WITH A FEDERAL LAW THAT DENIES BENEFITS TO SAME SEX COUPLES WHO ARE LEGALLY MARRIED.
CHUCK SIVERTSEN HAS THE DETAILS.
Return to index of stories...
THE SUPREME COURT WILL DECIDE THE EXTENT -- IF ANY -- TO WHICH GOVERNMENT
CAN BAN SAME-SEX
MARRIAGE.
EARLY NEXT YEAR, IT WILL HEAR TWO CASES: ONE FROM CALIFORNIA, WHERE VOTERS
PASSED PROPOSITION EIGHT BANNING GAY MARRIAGE --AND ANOTHER CHALLENGING THE
DEFENSE OF MARRIAGE ACT -- A FEDERAL LAW THAT ALSO FORBIDS SAME-SEX
MATRIMONY.
BOTH SIDES WELCOMED THE COURT'S INTERVENTION.
MARK LENO, CALIFORNIA STATE SENATOR SOT - "WITHIN A YEAR OR SO. I'VE
VERY CONFIDENT WE'LL HAVE EQUAL MARRIAGE RIGHTS IN CALIFORNIA - HOPEFULLY
ACROSS THE COUNTRY!"
RANDY THOMASSON/SAVECALIFORNIA.COM SOT - "BUT THE US SUPREME COURT , I
EXPECT 4 OR 5 JUSTICES TO UPHOLD PROP 8, WHY, BECAUSE THE CONSTITUTION OF
THE UNITED STATES DOESN'T HAVE MARRIAGE IN IT, AND THE 10TH AMENDMENT SAYS
WHAT IS NOT IN THE FEDERAL POWERS BELONGS TO THE STATES."
AFTER PUBLICLY OPPOSING SAME-SEX MARRIAGE, PRESIDENT OBAMA VERY PUBLICLY
CHANGED HIS MIND, TELLING ABC'S ROBIN ROBERTS:
OBAMA NATS - I'VE JUST CONCLUDED THAT FOR ME PERSONALLY, IT IS IMPORTANT FOR
ME TO GO AHEAD AND AFFIRM THAT I THINK SAME-SEX COUPLES SHOULD BE ABLE TO
GET MARRIED.
OTHERS AGREED. ON ELECTION DAY, AFTER MANY DEFEATS AT THE BALLOT BOX, VOTERS
APPROVED SAME-SEX MARRIAGE REFERENDUMS IN MAINE, MARYLAND, AND WASHINGTON
STATE.
OPPONENTS SAY THE BEDROCK OF OUR CULTURE IS IN DANGER OF CRUMBLING.
SPRIGG SOT - THE FUNDAMENTAL REASON WHY MARRIAGE IS TREATED AS A PUBLIC
INSTITUTION RATHER THAN A PURELY PRIVATE RELATIONSHIP IS BECAUSE IT SERVES
THE INTEREST OF SOCIETY AND SERVES THE INTEREST OF CHILDREN."

AORTIC STENOSIS, IT'S COMMONLY A CONSEQUENCE OF AN AGING HEART. SPECIFICALLY THE HEART VALVE.
DR. BRIAN HUMMEL/CARDIOTHORACIC SURGEON
RUNS:
7:38 The aortic valve is the valve that separates the main pumping chamber; the left ventricle from the remainder of the body.
LIKE MOST PUMPS, THIS ONE CAN BREAK DOWN OVER TIME.
DR. STEVEN PRIEST/CARDIOLOGIST
RUNS:
:52 Oftentimes it is just a atherosclerosis progressing- like blockage in the coronary to blockage in the valve. And calcium build up in the valve becomes less flexible and with loss of flexibility of the valve blood can't push the valve aside to get out of the heart.
THE CONDITION WORSENS GRADUALLY OVER A PERIOD OF YEARS.
DR. STEVEN PRIEST/CARDIOLOGIST
RUNS:
2:12 A patient may be aware that they have a valve problem and actually in the beginning be completely asymptomatic. Over even ten years it becomes more severe and then as it becomes very severe.
SYMPTOMS INCLUDE:
DR. STEVEN PRIEST/CARDIOLOGIST
RUNS:
2:41 Shortness of breath and chest pain. When it gets extremely severe, patients might start having dizziness or syncope or passing out.
AMY OSHIER/REPORTING
RUNS:
Aortic stenosis is not considered preventable. In early stages people may undergo an angioplasty to open the valve and increase its pumping function. The only long-term solution is a valve replacement.
DR. BRIAN HUMMEL/CARDIOTHORACIC SURGEON
RUNS:
:45 The standard operation was to open somebody's chest, stop their heart, open the aorta, cut out the valve, sew a new valve in, close up, and take them off the heart lung machine.
SURGEONS AT LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM ARE NOW REPLACING THE AORTIC VALVE WITHOUT OPENING THE CHEST. CALLED TAVR- A NEW VALVE IS FED THROUGH A CATHETER INSERTED THE GROIN WHICH IS THREADED TO THE HEART. IT'S NOW APPROVED FOR USE IN SELECT, LATE-STAGE PATIENTS.
DR. BRIAN HUMMEL/CARDIOTHORACIC SURGEON
RUNS:
7:54 As the baby boomers age, we're going to see more and more of these patients-where these valves become narrowed and really limit the lifestyle and life expectancy.
WITH NO CURE TO AGING, PROCEDURES LIKE TAVR ARE BREATHING NEW LIFE INTO AN OLD HEART. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER.

IT WAS 3:05 SATURDAY MORNING, WHEN POLICE RESPONDED TO A CALL OF A SUSPICIOUS PERSON IN A BLACK CAR AT ARMOUR BOULEVARD AND HOLMES STREET.
OFFICERS APPROACHED THE BLACK BENTLY AND FOUND KANSAS CITY CHIEFS LINEBACKER JOVAN BELCHER ASLEEP IN THE DRIVER SEAT.
"Officer: Just go ahead and step-out, brother. I'll roll-up the windows. Ok? Belcher: Alright."
THE PRO-FOOTBALL PLAYER GOT OUT OF HIS CAR AND TOLD OFFICERS HE WAS VISITING A FRIEND THAT LIVES IN THE NEARBY APARTMENT.
"Your cars running and you're passed out inside it. You weren't driving. You are correct.
Belcher: I wasn't. I was upstairs.
Officer: I hear you. That's why going upstairs is going to be a good place for you to go back to."
BELCHER AGREED TO LEAVE HIS CAR THERE AND WENT INSIDE.
FOUR AND HALF HOURS LATER, BELCHER'S MOTHER CALLED 911 TO TELL POLICE HER SON THE CHIEF'S PLAYER HAD SHOT HIS 22-YEAR-OLD GIRLFRIEND KASANDRA PERKINS AT THEIR HOME.
"Ok, so she's been shot? Yes. Ok, right now is she awake? Kasandra, stay with me. The ambulance is on the way. You hear me? You hear me? Kasandra!"
POLICE WERE THEN CALLED TO ARROWHEAD STADIUM.
"We believe our suspect is a chiefs player."

"all right i'm on the southside i'm at the main entrance trying to sneak up on foot. i need a rifle. turn off the siren i can hear one in the distance now."

FORECAST OPEN
Return to index of stories...

AS THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES, A SECRET SERVICE OFFICIAL SAYS PROTOCOLS HAVE BEEN PUT IN PLACE TO MAKE SURE THIS DOESN'T HAPPEN AGAIN.

F-W-C OFFICIALS ARE CONCERNED THIS MORNING THAT BEARS ARE HANGING AROUND SOUTHWEST FLORIDA COMMUNITIES MORE THAN EVER.
THIS YEAR, F-W-C HAS FIELDED 83 CALLS ABOUT BEAR SIGHTINGS IN LEHIGH ACRES, THE HIGHEST NUMBER OF CALLS FOR AN URBAN AREA IN THE STATE.
F-W-C SAYS BEARS LIKE LEHIGH BECAUSE THERE'S ENOUGH EASY FOOD SOURCES LIKE PET FOOD OR GARBAGE.
ALSO, THERE'S A LOT OF VACANT AND OVERGROWN PROPERTIES THE BEARS CAN HIDE, LIVE AND THRIVE IN.

Angeline Scotten
FWC Wildlife Assistance Biologist
"We're seeing an increase in bear numbers and we're also seeing an increase in bear movement. The bears from lehigh are coming up from big cypress and Lehigh's not the only one, the state as a whole has had a lot of bear issues this year."
F-W-C ADVICES PEOPLE TO LOCK UP THEIR GARBAGE, AND IF YOU SEE A BEAR, THEY SAY IT'S BEST TO ACTUALLY HARASS THE ANIMAL.
MAKE LOUD NOISES, THROW THINGS AND IT AND WAVE YOUR ARMS WILDLY.
THESE THINGS USUALLY SCARE BEARS INTO NOT COMING BACK.
