GOOD MORNING AND WELCOME TO NBC-2 NEWS TODAY.

AND I'M KELLY CRESWELL
TODAY IS SUNDAY, DECEMBER 9.
WE'LL HAVE A LOOK AT TODAY'S TOP STORIES IN JUST A MINUTE.
BUT FIRST METEOROLOGIST JASON DUNNING IS HERE WITH YOUR FIRST ALERT FORECAST.
Return to index of stories...
THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
We had quite the showery surprise Saturday afternoon with widespread rain developing across Southwest Florida as the sea breeze became engaged and triggered several downpours.
It looks like our Sunday afternoon will be much quieter as some slightly drier air settles in, which should work to limit shower activity today. Enough moisture will still be in place to support some isolated rain, but this shouldn't even be close to covering as much ground as Saturday's rain event.
The main concern today will be widespread dense fog that will build in through the predawn and early morning hours, leading to visibilities less than a quarter mile. Once the fog lifts away by mid morning, though, sunshine will break through, and we'll enjoy a partly cloudy sky for the remainder of the day.
Our streak of warmer weather will stay alive today as temperatures warm into the low to mid 80s this afternoon; look for lower 80s close to the coast and mid 80s as you go farther inland.
Our weather will get a bit more interesting next week as a front moves in from the north and stalls over Central and South Florida. We'll track a series of disturbances that will ride in along this front, resulting in some good opportunities for rain Tuesday and Wednesday. Prepare for these days to be fairly wet and cloudy with scattered rain and even a couple thunderstorms in the mix.
A few widely scattered showers will even build in Monday as an onshore flow develops off the Gulf, ushering in some tropical moisture. The bulk of this rain will likely get carried inland by a southwesterly wind, but we'll see a few showers around the urban corridor around midday through the mid afternoon.
The newest forecast models are actually wanting to bring this next cool front a little farther south than previously predicted, so there's a chance we'll get a modest cool down once the system exits on Thursday. Until then, temperatures will run well above average with daytime highs in the low to mid 80s and overnight lows in the upper 60s.
By the end of the week, temperatures should drop a few degrees with daytime highs in the upper 70s and low 80s and overnight temperatures cooling into the upper 50s and lower 60s.

:41 It's not talked up very much, I guess we have never had anybody have this kind of cancer who is a real good spokesperson for it.
BUT DOCTORS ARE TRYING TO SERVE AS MOUTHPIECES, BREAKING THE SILENCE ON THE LINK BETWEEN THESE CANCERS AND HPV.
DR. PHILLIP ANDREWS/OTOLARYNGOLOGIST
RUNS:
2:55 Fifteen-eighteen years ago, probably 90-95% of my new cancer patients were smokers and their cancers were most of the time caused by the smoking. But now about 45% are non smokers and the majority of those are caused by HPV.
AMY OSHIER/REPORTING
RUNS:
The number of HPV-related head and neck cancers is on the rise. Today's patient are men and women in their 40s and 50s who've never smoked and rarely drink- but who've been infected with one of two HPV strains.
Breaking it down by the numbers: if you're a drinker AND A SMOKER You're at 53 times the risk of developing oral cancers. But if you have the HPV virus, your risk of developing cancer is 243 times the risk. THE ONLY POSITIVE, IS THAT IN MOST CASESS THE TUMORS ARE CURABLE.
DR. PHILLIP ANDREWS/OTOLARYNGOLOGIST
RUNS:
3:24 These are largely cancers of the tonsils or the base of the tongue, way back in the back of the throat. 3:51 The treatment is primarily radiation and chemotherapy. It depends on what stage we catch it. Some of the smaller cancers in the base of the tongue and tonsils we'll treat with radiation alone particularly if its HPV related.
ALL THIS ADDS UP TO BRING AWARENESS TO A QUIETLY BUT QUICKLY GROWING DISEASE. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER.

JUST WEEKS AFTER THE HORRIFIC DISCOVERY OF A TWO-YEAR-OLD DOG HANGING FROM A TREE, INVESTIGATORS ARE STILL SEARCHING FOR THE PERSON OR PERSONS WHO COMMITTED THE FELONY CRIME.
TRISH ROUTTE WITH CRIME STOPPERS HAS THE DETAILS.
Return to index of stories...
Det. John Desrosiers - "Behavior like this doesn't stop - it escalates. And unfortunately, next time it could be a person."
Nearly three weeks ago, a passer by made the gruesome discovery of a two year old terrier mix hung in the middle of a wooded area in Buckingham. Little is known about the dog, or its killer, and now detectives are reaching out to the community for answers.
Det. Desrosiers - "It sounds cruel, but people brag about this type of thing. They want friends and relatives that they think might find this amusing to know what they did."
According to detectives, the heinous act was definitely pre-planned - and not something done quickly out of anger.
Det. Desrosiers - "The height of the limb suggested that this was a pre-meditated thing. It wasn't anything spur of the moment. They had to stand on a ladder or on top of a truck to get them up to where they hung this dog from."
Trish Routte: Whomever is responsible for this twisted crime is - without a doubt - someone with serious issues. The felony crime took time, effort and a deranged mental state to do something most people would consider incomprehensible.
And as if the hanging wasn't enough, investigators believe the dog suffered greatly in its final minutes of life.
Det. Desrosiers - "The dog's hind legs were just able to touch the ground and it was determined at the scene that the ground had been kicked up and disturbed. So the dog was clearly alive when it was hung and struggling for his life."
The hanging took place in a wooded area of Buckingham - off a dirt road - in an area that most people wouldn't even know about.
Det. Desrosiers - "I would assume that the person knew the area, if not lives in the area."
It's estimated that the dog's lifeless body dangled from the three for less than 12 hours before being discovered by a passer by. There were no tags or microchips to trace the dog back to his owner. So now police are banking on the public's help with anything they may have seen or heard about the incident.
Det. Desrosiers - "Help us put a stop to this before it gets worse."
For Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers, I'm Trish Routte.

FORECAST OPEN
