FORECAST OPEN
Return to index of stories...
THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
RAIN ON THE WAY
That calendar might tell us it's December, but it's going to feel like a late spring or early summer week across Southwest Florida with lots of warmth, humidity, and even a good chance for rain.
The big weather maker for us this week is a cold front that's expected to get caught up over Central Florida Tuesday and Wednesday. For Southwest Florida, a southerly wind will bring in lots of warmth and moisture ahead of this front, resulting in lots of cloudiness along with scattered showers and storms.
The best opportunities for rain this week will come Tuesday and Wednesday. The prime locations for rain today will be deep inland and across northern portions of the viewing area near Charlotte and Desoto County.
By Tuesday morning humidity levels will be high enough that we will experience some very thick fog. Make sure to drive with caution!
Also, enough moisture will flow in from the southwest to produce some showers and heavier downpours. As we progress through the day Tuesday, we'll even see a chance for some stronger thunderstorms as the atmosphere becomes more unstable. We'll need to watch the radar closely Tuesday for some of these storms that could become strong enough to produce higher winds and heavy rain.
Tuesday will be a great day to put the NBC 2 Weather app to good use, giving you access to the only LIVE radar in Southwest Florida. If you don't already have this app on your iPhone or Android, just search "NBC2 Wx" in the app store. It's a great tool for tracking storms.
In addition to the chance of rain Tuesday, our sky will stay pretty cloudy, and we'll notice a stiff breeze from the south. Even with all the clouds around, temperatures will warm back into the 80s, but probably closer to low 80s instead of the mid 80s.
Wednesday looks to be another day with scattered rain and lots of clouds, but Thursday should be much nicer with more sunshine along with a drop in humidity.
So once we get past a couple wet days this week, the end of the week into the upcoming weekend will be pretty quiet. Daytimes highs will be close to 80, and overnight lows will cool into the low 60s.

BY THE TIME YOU HEAR THIS SOUND -- IT'S LIKELY TOO LATE FOR VICTIMS OF SUDDEN CARDIAC ARREST.
THEY NEED IMMEDIATE C-P-R TO KEEP BLOOD FLOWING TO THE HEART AND BRAIN. BUT THE MAJORITY OF PEOPLE STANDING AROUND WHEN SOMEONE COLLAPSES LACK THE CONFIDENCE TO TAKE ACTION.
"The way to build that confidence is to make the process as simple as possible."
DR. ALSON INABA OF THE KAPI'OLANI MEDICAL CENTER FOR WOMEN AND CHILDREN IN HAWAII WAS THE ONE WHO CAME UP WITH SUCH A SIMPLE IDEA, AND IT'S SINCE REVOLUTIONIZED THE WORLD OF C-P-R.

THAT'S IT. NO COMPLICATED BREATHING NECESSARY.

"By the end of things, if you're sending them a 10 dollar text message donation, they may not have all that much left that actually goes to the program or the help you may have wanted someone to receive."
THAT'S BECAUSE THERE ARE MIDDLE MEN MANAGING THE ONLINE TRANSACTIONS FOR THE CHARITIES.

WOMEN IN THE UNITED STATES ARE MORE LIKELY THAN MEN TO CHOOSE VOLUNTARY STERILIZATION.

THE BURDEN OF CHILD BEARING, OR NOT. MOST TIMES IT FALLS TO THE WOMAN TO CARRY THE LOAD OF FAMILY PLANNING. ALTHOUGH A PERMANENT FORM OF MALE STERILIZATION MAY BE MAKING A COMEBACK.

RUNS:
8:59 I've seen a trend of vasectomy increasing. I think it's being conscious on how much effort the woman has during pregnancies and then taking contraceptive pills.
THE STANDARD VASECTOMY IS A SURGICAL PROCEDURE WHICH SLICES INTO THE SCROTUM AND CUTS THE TUBE WHICH CARRIES SPERM.
DR. ALEJANDRO MIRANDA-SOUSA/UROLOGIST
RUNS:
1:14 It's a very simple, very routine procedure. We use THE scalpel, cut the skin and get access to this little tube about the size of an ink cartridge.
AMY OSHIER/REPORTING
RUNS:
Some men who've considered a vasectomy aren't anxious to go under the knife. There's a procedure for them too. It delivers the same result with no cutting.
DR. ALEJANDRO MIRANDA-SOUSA/UROLOGIST
RUNS:
1:14 What we do nowadays, we call a non scalpel vasectomy. We do a little puncture and we have a special instrument, that is kind of a ring forceps, so we grab the vasa deferentia- that's the name of the tube - we deliver it through a tiny puncture opening. We divide it, we cauterize it to make sure it's a permanent and effective procedure.
IT'S PERFORMED IN-OFFICE, UNDER LOCAL ANESTHESIA. SINCE THERE'S NO CUTTING THERE'S NO NEED FOR STITCHES.
DR. ALEJANDRO MIRANDA-SOUSA/UROLOGIST
RUNS:
1:14 It makes the procedure much more simple. Much, much less risk of bleeding or side effects.
SORENESS GOES AWAY IN A MATTER OF DAYS NOT WEEKS. WHILE THE PROCEDURE MAY BE COMPLETE, A MAN IS NOT CONSIDERED STERILE FOR A FEW MONTHS, WHEN HIS SPERM COUNT REACHES ZERO. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER.

NATSOT 21:00:08: "HEEL."
This is Roxie and her handler Kristen Maurer heading to work. Roxie is something of a private eye. but more accurately, she's a private "nose" sniffing out illegal drugs.
NATSOT: GOOD GIRL.VERY GOOD.
Unlike the drug sniffing dogs who work with law enforcement officers, Roxie and Kristen have a very different client base. They work for concerned parents. making house calls to check kids rooms - and other parts of the house - for drugs.
SOT KRISTEN MAURER: 20:58:32
"ROXY CAN FIND DRUGS IN PLACES THAT PARENTS WILL NEVER FIND."
SOT AVA: 21:06:10
"I WAS VERY WORRIED THAT MY DAUGHTER WAS HANGING AROUND WITH KIDS THAT WERE DOING DRUGS."
Ava, who doesn't want her last name used, is a Houston mom who called Kristen when she suspected her daughter might be using drugs.
SOT AVA: 21:07:46
"OH I WAS VERY NERVOUS THAT SHE WAS GOING TO FIND DRUGS IN THE GARAGE."
NATSOT KRISTEN: 21:02:14 "SHE'S ALREADY PICKING UP A SCENT."
There's a procedure as Roxie searches, the parent must be in the room.
NATSOT KRISTEN: 21:02:20 "IS IT HERE, WELL WHERE IS IT?"
And if Roxie indicates she's found something.the PARENT has to uncover whatever it is.
SOT KRISTEN: 20:57:52
"I JUST SAY MY DOG'S ALERTED IN THIS AREA, IF I WERE YOU I'D SEARCH THE ENTIRE AREA/EDIT/ 21:58:00 AND I KIND OF GIVE THEM AN IDEA OF WHAT THEY NEED TO DO NEXT.
Roxie DID find marijuana in the garage of Ava's home. a discovery the mom says was difficult for both her AND her daughter.
SOT AVA: 21:08:50
"SHE WAS UPSET THAT I INVADED HER PRIVACY."
a conversation Ava says turned her daughter around. a new group of school friends and improving grades.
SOT AVA: 21:09:00
"THE REASON WHY I DID IT IS TO KEEP HER SAFE AND OFF DRUGS.
Today Show Contributor and child psychologist Dr. Jeffrey Gardere says bringing in a dog to search for drugs might solve the problem, but it could also make matters worse.
SOT 16:45:25
"LOOKING FOR THE DRUGS WITH A DOG I THINK IS AN OVERKILL. WHAT IT COMES DOWN TO IS/EDIT/HAVING A RELATIONSHIP/EDIT/AND I DON'T KNOW IF YOU CAN DO THAT IF YOU'RE BRINGING IN DRUG SNIFFING DOGS.
For their part, Kristen says her job -- and Roxie's -- is to help parents who feel they have nowhere else to turn.
SOT KRISTEN: 21:21:20
"ITS A TOOL THAT THE PARENTS CAN USE TO GET THEIR CHILD THE HELP THAT THEY NEED."
