Brendan fonock is sounding the alarm.

-brendan fonock/pres., cape coral fire union-"were having apparatus that is unable to respond to a fire with reports of people inside. That's unacceptable."

Cape coral's fire fleet is old and many of the fire trucks are in desperate need of repair.

-shuffling papers

In this 50-page packet obtained exclusively by NBC2, the fire union president sites over a dozen mechanical problems between 2010 to 2012.

Serious issues relating to brakes, engine overheating, rust, power steering failure and leaks.

-fonock-"it seems like no one is listening to us right now."

Which is why fonock is fighting for a new fire lieutenant. Someone in a sworn position who will oversee the maintanence and repair of the city's fledgling fleet. A job currently done by a civilian staffer.

Councilman john carioscia doesn't support the change.

-john carioscia/cape councilman-"I don't want to take a trained fire lieutenant put him on a desk to request oil changes and maintanence."

Councilwoman rana erbrick acknowledges the maintenance problems.

-me & rana erbrick/cape councilman-"do you feel there is a problem with our fleet? I feel that there is.there are problems obviously."

But believes it will take some time to make long-term changes.

-erbrick-"we didn't get into this position overnight and its going to take more than a week or two to get us out of this." Return to index of stories...

HERE'S NBC2'S ELIZABETH BILLINGSLEY. Return to index of stories...

IGNITION INTERLOCK DEBATE-BNR-PKG

DRUNK DRIVING LEAVES LIVES SHATTERED, DESTROYED AND BROKEN -

"It's the consequences, or the accumulation of them, that will cause people to look at their relationship with alcohol and change that relationship."

KEVIN LEWIS IS THE C-E-O OF SOUTHWEST FLORIDA ADDICTION SERVICES.

HE SAYS OFTEN PEOPLE WITH ALCOHOL PROBLEMS DON'T SEEK TREATMENT UNTIL A COURT ORDERS IT.

"there are individuals suffering from alcohol disorders or addictions and they continue to drive."

FLORIDA HAS MANDATED A DEVICE CALLED AN IGNITION INTERLOCK FOR SOME CONVICTED DRUNK DRIVERS SINCE 2004.

BLOW A POINT OH-FIVE ON THE DEVICE, AND IT WON'T START THE CAR.

BUT THAT'S TOO HIGH, ACCORDING TO EXECUTIVES FROM THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAY SAFETY AND MOTOR VEHICLES.

"Florida has one of the highest blood alcohol thresholds in the nation to activate the device at.05. We're proposing to lower that to.025, which puts it more in line with national standards."

LEWIS EXPLAINS POINT OH TWO FIVE WOULD BE THE EQUIVALENT OF TWO BEERS IN AN HOUR FOR A 200 POUND MAN.

HE APPLAUDS THE MOVE TO LOWER THE BLOOD ALCOHOL LIMIT FOR CONVICTED DRUNK DRIVERS -

BUT THINKS ZERO TOLERANCE WOULD BE A BETTER POLICY.

"It's at best a mixed message and not nearly as effective as it could be. When a person drinks that much, there's a definite impact on their driving ability, and if a person's had multiple offenses or they've had a very very high blood level, that's probably in their best interest and the general public's best interest to not be driving while drinking at that level"

NEARLY 65-THOUSAND FLORIDA DRIVERS HAVE USED THE DEVICES SINCE STATE JUDGES BEGAN ORDERING THEM IN 2004.

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

RAIN ON THE WAY

That calendar might tell us it's December, but it's going to feel like a late spring or early summer week across Southwest Florida with lots of warmth, humidity, and even a good chance for rain.

The big weather maker for us this week is a cold front that's expected to get caught up over Central Florida Tuesday and Wednesday. For Southwest Florida, a southerly wind will bring in lots of warmth and moisture ahead of this front, resulting in lots of cloudiness along with scattered showers and storms.

The best opportunities for rain this week will come Tuesday and Wednesday. The prime locations for rain today will be deep inland and across northern portions of the viewing area near Charlotte and Desoto County.

By Tuesday morning humidity levels will be high enough that we will experience some very thick fog. Make sure to drive with caution!

Also, enough moisture will flow in from the southwest to produce some showers and heavier downpours. As we progress through the day Tuesday, we'll even see a chance for some stronger thunderstorms as the atmosphere becomes more unstable. We'll need to watch the radar closely Tuesday for some of these storms that could become strong enough to produce higher winds and heavy rain.

Tuesday will be a great day to put the NBC 2 Weather app to good use, giving you access to the only LIVE radar in Southwest Florida. If you don't already have this app on your iPhone or Android, just search "NBC2 Wx" in the app store. It's a great tool for tracking storms.

In addition to the chance of rain Tuesday, our sky will stay pretty cloudy, and we'll notice a stiff breeze from the south. Even with all the clouds around, temperatures will warm back into the 80s, but probably closer to low 80s instead of the mid 80s.

Wednesday looks to be another day with scattered rain and lots of clouds, but Thursday should be much nicer with more sunshine along with a drop in humidity.

So once we get past a couple wet days this week, the end of the week into the upcoming weekend will be pretty quiet. Daytimes highs will be close to 80, and overnight lows will cool into the low 60s. Return to index of stories...

NOW R-S-W WANTS TO MAKE IT EASIER FOR PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD.

SO WHEN GOVERNOR RICK SCOTT LED A TRADE MISSION TO COLOMBIA, REPRESENATIVES FROM R-S-W JUMPED ON BOARD.

WHILE PART OF THE TRIP WAS TO HELP ESTABLISH BUSINESS RELATIONSHIPS WITH SOME OF THE POTENTIAL TRADE BETWEEN COLOMBIA AND THE FLORIDA MARKET

IT WAS ALSO A CHANCE FOR SOUTHWEST FLORIDA TO LET COLOMBIA KNOW OUR AREA HAS SOMETHING DIFFERENT THAN WHAT MIAMI AND ORLANDO OFFERS.

01.05.26 The selling point is that our destination is a calm destination. It's the relaxing element, the unspoiled feel of Sanibel Island and Fort Myers Beach. The nature, the sustainability.
