WITH JUST 13 DAYS UNTIL THE FISCAL CLIFF DEADLINE, THE PRESIDENT SAYS HE'S PREPARED TO DO QUOTE "TOUGH THINGS" TO REACH AN AGREEMENT.

ALTHOUGH TODAY'S PRESS CONFERENCE WAS CALLED TO TALK ABOUT GUN VIOLENCE - THE FIRST QUESTION FROM THE MEDIA WAS ABOUT FISCAL CLIFF NEGOTIATIONS.

PRESIDENT OBAMA BELIEVES A DEAL WILL BE REACHED EVEN THOUGH NEGOTIATIONS HAVE STALLED.

"At some point there has got to be, I think a recognition on the part of my republican friends that - take the deal. They will be able to claim that they have worked with me over the last two years to reduce the deficit more than any other deficit reduction package."

THERE ARE 13 DAYS LEFT FOR CONGRESS TO COME TO AN AGREEMENT.

OTHERWISE A SET OF TAX RATE INCREASES AND SPENDING CUTS WILL GO INTO EFFECT - AND MANY AMERICANS WILL SEE SMALLER PAYCHECKS. Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

A cold front that swept through Southwest Florida with very little fanfare yesterday has brought us a quick dose of cooler and drier air. After a chilly start this morning with lows in the mid 50s here in town, temperatures will rebound quite nicely today under plenty of sunshine. Afternoon highs will climb into the upper 70s to lower 80s, but with a nice drop in our humidity levels it will feel quite pleasant today.

Winds this afternoon will remain from the northeast with a switch to the east/southeast through the evening hours. Mostly clear skies will prevail overnight and with an increase in the humidity, we're looking at the possibility of patchy dense fog by early tomorrow morning with lows in the upper 50s to low 60s.

Our Thursday will be another dry one under mostly to partly sunny skies. With a southerly flow across the peninsula, a more humid airmass will be in place with daytime highs reaching the lower 80s. We will more than likely see an increase in the cloud cover late Thursday and into early Friday with the approach of our second cold front for the week.

This front will bring us about a 40% chance of scattered showers during the early morning hours on Friday, with a more significant push of colder air arriving during the day. Skies will clear from north to south, but despite the afternoon sunshine daytime highs will struggle to reach 70° in many locations. Friday night looks to be the coldest as overnight lows will drop into the lower to middle 40s by Saturday morning. Afternoon highs will remain quite cool as they work their way into the upper 60s with lots of sunshine.

High pressure will have a firm grip on our weather through the upcoming weekend with highs in the low 70s by Sunday with sunny and dry weather through the Christmas holiday.

Return to index of stories...

EXTREME BUNKERS-OC

YOU MAY HAVE HEARD THE MAYAN CALENDAR PREDICTS THE APOCALYPSE ON FRIDAY.

SOME PEOPLE ARE TAKING THE PREDICTION VERY SERIOUSLY.

SOME ARE SPENDING MILLIONS OF DOLLARS ON ELABORATE BUNKERS-- WITH HOPES OF SURVIVING.

DAVID WRIGHT TAKES US UNDERGROUND TO EXPLORE THE END OF THE WORLD PREPS. Return to index of stories...

EXTREME BUNKERS-PKG

Ron Hubbard, creator of Atlas Survival Shelters, has built these doomsday-prepared structures deep underground.

"how many of these things are you selling?"

last year, it was like one a month,". "then, the beginning of 2012, it went to one a week and then, since december, it went to one a day."

Atlas Survival Shelters is one of a growing number of companies now catering to catastrophe, selling real estate from $100,000 to millions of dollars.

"This is going to protect us against nuclear, biological, chemical attacks, tornadoes, hurricanes, wildfires. If an earthquake comes, it gives you a place to go if your house is destroyed, and looters come, you can take your family underground. You can protect them,"

"How long can you live down here?,"

"For as long as you have to, as long as you got food or water. Indefinitely. I know a guy who has lived in one, full-time now, for 18 months. He uses it like a home,"

It's definitely helped business that an ancient Mayan prophecy predicts this Friday may mark some sort of global expiration date.

However plenty of 2012-er's are not so negative about the Mayan prophecy. In Mexico, Wright met astrologer Star Moser, who plans to be at the Mayan ruins Friday, praying to her crystal skull.

She believes this will mark the dawn of a new, more enlightened age. But plenty of others do not share the same sentiment.

"I'll be in my shelter in Texas, just in case,". "I'd feel really silly that I went and put in a nice shelter underground and I wasn't in it come Dec. 21."

But right after that, Hubbard plans to return to L.A. to build more of these shelters that he says are strong enough to be around for thousands of years. Return to index of stories...

DAD SCHOOL GUARDS-TFC CTR

THE TRAGEDY IN CONNECTICUT HAS MANY PARENTS LOOKING AT WAYS TO GET MORE INVOLVED IN THEIR CHILDREN'S SCHOOLS.

ONE WAY FOR DADS TO VOLUNTEER IS THROUGH A PROGRAM CALLED "WATCH D.O.G.S. DADS OF GREAT STUDENTS."

KJERSTIN RAMSING REPORTS. Return to index of stories...

DAD SCHOOL GUARDS-PKG

"In light of the tragedy in Connecticut it's very hard to make sure we have an air tight security. So it's just really important for some of us dads in particular if we have a chance to volunteer just so that there's more eyes out there."

ROBERT CHENAULT HAS A FOURTH GRADER AT ROOSEVELT ELEMENTARY. WHEN THE SCHOOL IMPLEMENTED THE WATCH DOGS PROGRAM THIS YEAR HE WAS QUICK TO SIGN UP.

"We are all in charge of raising each other's kids you know it takes more than family but a whole community to get involved."

WATCH D.O.G.S. LETS DADS AND OTHER FATHER FIGURES SPEND A DAY HELPING THEIR CHILD'S SCHOOL. THE MEN HAVE THEIR PICTURE TAKEN AND PUT ON A WALL. TODAY ROBERT SPENDS PART OF THE DAY PATROLLING THE HALLWAYS.

"Do you got your bathroom pass?"

THE WATCH DOG WILL HAVE LUNCH WITH THEIR STUDENT AND SPEND TIME VOLUNTEERING IN THE STUDENT'S CLASS.

"So they're broken down into these little areas."

IT'S NOT ONLY REWARDING FOR THE FATHER. BUT IN THIS CASE. ROBERT'S SON ANDREW.

"I think it's awesome. Because he IS awesome."

THE WATCH D.O.G.S. PROGRAM WAS INSPIRED BY A SCHOOL SHOOTING IN ARKANSAS IN 1998, BUT IT DOES NOT PRETEND TO BE A DETERRENT. MORE AS A WAY TO GET MORE DAD'S KEEPING AN EYE OUT IN THE SCHOOLS.

"I think being around more in our community with my family in particular has meant much more than any kind of extra dollars I could bring in. Some things you just can't put a price on." Return to index of stories...
