A HOME TAKEN BY A FIRE THAT SHOWED NO MERCEY AS IT RIPPED THROUGH OVERNIGHT.
BILL VAN HELDEN
CAPE CORAL FIRE CHIEF
"When crews arrived they found smoke coming from many parts of the building. We had flames showing from the rooftop."
THE FIRE WAS CONTAINED IN MINUTES, BUT THE SMOKE- SO THICK IT SWALLOWED EVERY CORNER INSIDE THE BUILDING.
AN IMAGE STILL TOO HARD FOR JANNETTE RAINLEY TO DESCRIBE AS SHE WAS FIRST TO ARRIVE OVERNIGHT.
"Weak in the knees. I couldn't breathe. This place is everything to me. I spent enough time here. The customers, the people I work with. I love them all."
A LOVE THAT SHE SAYS IS STRONGER THAN THESE FOUR WALLS-- AND HAS HOPE IN KNOWING, THAT THESE NOW SHATTERED DOORS WILL ONE DAY AGAIN REOPEN.

SOT: Roman Hasselberger, Next Door Neighbor "I saw the lights flashing, I was like, what's that all the big lights? It was a fire on the other side of the building."
JUST BEFORE 1:30 THIS MORNING.
82 YEAR-OLD ROMAN. WAS ASLEEP IN HIS HOME ON 28TH STREET SOUTHWEST.
WHEN HE WOKE UP TO A BRIGHT LIGHT AND SMOKE.
THE DUPLEX NEXT DOOR WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES.
SOT: Roman "I was going to get the hose before the firemen got here, to water it down just in case some sparks came over, but the the firemen got here."
NOW THIS BURNT SHELL OF A HOME, IS A CRIME SCENE.
SOT: Ken Bennett, Lehigh Acres Fire Marshal "We're going to label it as an arson fire, there shouldn't have been anybody inside of the house, it did not have electricity."
LEHIGH ACRES FIRE MARSHAL KEN BENNETT SAYS THE DUPLEX WAS VACANT, WINDOWS WERE BOARDED UP.
AND SOMEONE HAD TO BREAK INTO THE HOME TO START THE FIRE.
SOT: "The neighbors have told us there was nobody living here, we're going to consider it a burglary, so during the burglary the fire happened, that creates the arson."
A CRIME THAT ALREADY HAS THE MAN LIVING NEXT DOOR LOOKING FOR A NEW PLACE TO LIVE.
SOT: Roman "I'm going to buy a house in Cape Coral."

It's crunch time for the delivery business.
nats break
At the giant worldwide hub of U-P-S, planes are coming and going at all hours of the day and night -- jockeying for position like cars in mall parking lot on Christmas eve.
This place is the size of 90 football fields. and today is the Super Bowl of deliveries.
"IT'S PACKED. BUSY. VERY BUSY"
By midnight tonight, 28 million deliveries will be made to homes and businesses. That's 300 packages each and every second.almost double a normal days' load.
It's an enormous challenge even before mother nature threatened a last minute winter storm.
"WE'VE HAD SOME GREAT WEATHER THE LAST COUPLE WEEKS AND PERFORMED VERY WELL SO IT'S UNFORTUNATE THAT WE COULD POSSIBLY SEE WEATHER AND I THINK THE WAY THE METEOROLOGISTS ARE SAYING, IT'S COMING"
Amy Sitterly has worked the holiday rush for 21 years. first sorting packages. now she runs the place and insists they're ready for whatever turbulence the weather delivers.
"WE HAVE DE-ICE TRUCKS ALWAYS READY. WE STAY VERY CLOSE WITH THE METEOROLOGISTS WHICH ARE THERE FOR US 2/7 THEY'RE RIGHT ACROSS THE WAY. SO I BELIEVE THAT WE GET THROUGH A LOT OF ADVERSE CONDITIONS"
Some of these holiday gifts may be moved by ground due to the
weather but the air game remains crucial. especially at this Louisville hub. A different kind of derby with the stakes just as high.
Maybe this is the box YOU sent. If not, the clock is ticking but there IS still time.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
"Partly sunny, more humid"
The rest of our Thursday afternoon will be another dry one with a few more clouds mixing in with our sunshine. With a southerly flow across the peninsula, a more humid airmass will be in place with daytime highs reaching the lower 80s. We will more than likely see an increase in the cloud cover late Thursday and into early Friday with the approach of our second cold front for the week.
This front will bring us a band of a few scattered showers during the early morning hours on Friday, with a more significant push of colder air arriving during the day. Skies will clear from north to south, but despite the afternoon breezy sunshine daytime highs will struggle to reach 70° in many locations. Friday night looks to be the coldest as overnight lows will drop into the lower to middle 40s by Saturday morning. Afternoon highs will remain quite cool as they work their way into the middle to upper 60s with lots of sunshine.
High pressure will have a firm grip on our weather through the upcoming weekend with highs in the low 70s returning by Sunday with sunny and dry weather through the Christmas holiday.

A HIGHWAY SAFETY GROUP HAS UPPED THE STAKES IN CRASH TESTS FOR NEXT YEAR'S MODELS.

THE INSURANCE INSTITUTE FOR HIGHWAY SAFETY CALLS THEM SMALL OVERLAP FRONTAL CRASHES.
.WHERE JUST THE FRONT CORNER OF THE VEHICLE HITS ANOTHER VEHICLE, STRUCTURE, TREE OR POLE.

"The wheel, the front wheel will actually push back into the wheel well which will then be pushed back into the occupant's leg space.we've seen instrument panels coming back.and heads and chests actually striking this intruding structure"
SO, FOR 2013 MODELS, THE INSTITUTE ADDED A SMALL OVERLAP CRASH TEST. TO OTHER TESTS IT CONDUCTS ON NEW CARS.
. WITH SURPRISING RESULTS: THE MORE MODERATELY PRICED MIDSIZED. TESTED BETTER THAN THEIR LUXURY COUNTERPARTS.
"What we find good about this is that it means that the public doesn't have to spend a lot of money to get state of the art crash protection"
13 MIDSIZE CARS LIKE THE HONDA ACCORD. DODGE AVENGER. FORD FUSION. VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT AND NISSAN ALTIMA. ALL DID WELL ENOUGH TO EARN THE INSTITUTE'S NEWEST RATING OF TOP SAFETY PICK PLUS.
BUT NOT TOYOTA'S CAMRY.AND PRIUS V.
"We're still going to say that the Toyota Camry and Prius are a Top Safety Pick but they can't get the Top Safety Pick Plus award because of their poor performance in the small overlap crash test"
TOYOTA POINTED OUT IT HAS MORE TOP SAFETY PICKS THAN ANY OTHER AUTOMAKER.

"No I'll be asleep at that time. I'll let the rest of the people handle that but I'll be asleep."
"If you work nights or something like that, get off work, come by, maybe that's a pretty good idea."
"Now this doesn't just give an advantage of macy's over the other retail stores, by opening up 48 hours just before christmas, it's also a good move to compete against the online stores."
MACY'S HOPES THEY CAN CREATE A SORT OF BLACK FRIDAY BUZZ FOR BARGAIN SHOPPERS AND PROCRASTINATORS. BUT THE QUESTION STILL REMAINS. WHO WILL BE HERE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT.
"Absolutely, if there's less people out, why not?"

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

SHE HAD JUST FINISHED ONE OF THE BEST RUNS OF HER LIFE ON CRYSTAL MOUNTAIN.
BUT A LIFETIME OF SKIING DIDN'T PREPARE 20-YEAR-OLD EMILY ANDERSON FOR WHAT HAPPENED NEXT.
"And I saw a slide start to break underneath my feet. and I kind of heard it and. There was nothing really I could do and it just kind of started to sweep me off." / "I remember kind of going down and not being able to stop. and I was kind of yelling like, 'Oh my gosh, oh my gosh.'"
IN THE NORTHWAY PORTION OF THE SKI AREA, EMILY AND HER FRIEND WILL WERE CAUGHT IN A SMALL AVALANCHE.
WILL WAS ABLE TO ESCAPE IT, BUT THE SNOW SWEPT EMILY INTO A TREE WELL.
"I was able to free my left arm a little bit to kind of scoop snow away from my mouth. and so I made a little air pocket." / "I prayed a lot and just sat there and waited to be rescued."
SHE WAS BURIED FOR 15 MINUTES. BARELY ABLE TO MOVE. BARELY ABLE TO BREATHE.
UNTIL.
"I felt a probe hit me from people above. And I was just like. I was so relieved 'cause I knew exactly what it was."
THE SKI PATROL AND OTHER SKIERS FOUND HER JUST IN TIME.
ALIVE. AND NOW, WITH A LESSON FOR OTHERS.
"Pretty much the average skier, they need to be educated and have the equipment, 'cause it could save their lives or someone else's."
BELIEVE IT OR NOT, THE YOUNG WOMAN WHO COULD HAVE EASILY DIED ON THE MOUNTAIN YESTERDAY, NOW CAN'T WAIT TO GET BACK THERE.
"I'm lovin' this rain right now. like that means snow in the mountains."

HUNTINGTON MEMORIAL HOSPITAL IS THE FIRST HOSPITAL IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA TO OFFER THIS NEW TECHNOLOGY TO PATIENTS.
"SPINAL CORD INJURY PATIENTS, THERE IS NO CURE. THEY CANT WALK ON THEIR OWN, THEY CAN USE LONG LEG BRACES BUT IT'S AWKWARD. TO SEE A PATIENT COME IN A PUT THE DEVICE ON AND WALK EVEN THOUGH ITS TEN FEET IT WAS PRETTY AMAZING.
SENSORS IN THE FOOT PLATE PINPOINT THE CENTER OF GRAVITY SO THE USER CAN BALANCE AND TAKE A STEP.
THE BACK PACK IS A COMPUTER WITH TWO LITHIUM BATTERIES ON EITHER SIDE TO DRIVE THE HIP AND KNEE MOTORS.
AARON USES A SPOTTER TO BE SAFE BUT HE HAS NOW LEARNED TO BALANCE AND ADVANCE THE MACHINE ON HIS OWN.
"AT FIRST I FELT SCARED BUT IT WAS ALSO A VERY POWERFUL FEELING TO BE UPRIGHT AND TO BE ABLE TO LOOK PEOPLE IN THE EYE AND MOVE ACROSS THE ROOM IN A STANDING POSITION."
"HAVING SOMETHING LIKE THIS TO LOOK FORWARD TO AND KEEP YOU HEALTHY AND ENERGIZED IS REALLY IMPORTANT SO THAT'S WHY I REALLY WANT OTHER PEOPLE TO HAVE A CHANCE TO USE SOMETHING LIKE THIS."
