5:02 FORECAST ON THE 2'S-WX WALL

Today's Weather Story

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

"TRACKING OUR NEXT COLD FRONT"

After a picture perfect Wednesday, we'll start to notice some subtle changes to our forecast for Thursday as we wait for the arrival of a strong cold front on Friday. This front will user in some of the coldest air of the season thus far.

Overnight, skies have stayed clear and winds have taken more of southeasterly turn. With increasing moisture and humidity early this morning, we're looking at the potential for some patchy fog around sunrise, especially across our inland communities.

The rest of our Thursday afternoon will be another dry one with a few more clouds mixing in with our sunshine. With a southerly flow across the peninsula, a more humid airmass will be in place with daytime highs reaching the lower 80s. We will more than likely see an increase in the cloud cover late Thursday and into early Friday with the approach of our second cold front for the week.

This front will bring us a band of a few scattered showers during the early morning hours on Friday, with a more significant push of colder air arriving during the day. Skies will clear from north to south, but despite the afternoon breezy sunshine daytime highs will struggle to reach 70° in many locations. Friday night looks to be the coldest as overnight lows will drop into the lower to middle 40s by Saturday morning. Afternoon highs will remain quite cool as they work their way into the middle to upper 60s with lots of sunshine.

High pressure will have a firm grip on our weather through the upcoming weekend with highs in the low 70s returning by Sunday with sunny and dry weather through the Christmas holiday. Return to index of stories...

-NATS OF DJ-

DJ JOE WINNER WAS ON THE AIR LAST FRIDAY WHEN NEWS OF THE SCHOOL SHOOTING WENT NATIONAL.

ALTHOUGH LISTENERS NEVER COMPLAINED ABOUT THE HEARING THE SONG FOLLOWING THE SHOOTING.

STATION MANAGERS FELT IT WAS A SHOW OF RESPECT TO THE 26 FAMILIES FOREVER CHANGED.

JOE WINNER, B103.9: by not play this maybe we're just not bringing that day back in your memory

JIM ECKEL, SUPPORTS RADIO STATION: I can understand their not wanting to play it and I don't blame them

THE STATION DOES NOT PLAN TAKING ANY OTHER SONGS OFF THEIR PLAYLIST.

BUT SAYS THEY'LL KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR OTHER SONGS WITH POTENTIALLY UPSETTING LYRICS.

5:42 FORECAST ON THE 2'S-WX WALL

Weather Trends

CRASH TESTS-2 SHOT

HIGHWAY SAFETY GROUP HAS UPPED THE STAKES IN CRASH TESTS FOR NEXT YEAR'S MODELS

AND, TURNS OUT, SOME OF THE MORE AFFORDABLE FAMILY CARS DID BETTER THAN THE MOST EXPENSIVE ONES.

DETAILS FROM CHRIS CLACKUM. Return to index of stories...

CRASH TESTS-PKG

THE INSURANCE INSTITUTE FOR HIGHWAY SAFETY CALLS THEM SMALL OVERLAP FRONTAL CRASHES.

.WHERE JUST THE FRONT CORNER OF THE VEHICLE HITS ANOTHER VEHICLE, STRUCTURE, TREE OR POLE.

.OFTEN WITH CATASTROPHIC CONSEQUENCES. 25-PERCENT OF SERIOUS INJURIES OR DEATHS OCCUR IN THESE TYPE COLLISIONS.

"The wheel, the front wheel will actually push back into the wheel well which will then be pushed back into the occupant's leg space.we've seen instrument panels coming back.and heads and chests actually striking this intruding structure"

SO, FOR 2013 MODELS, THE INSTITUTE ADDED A SMALL OVERLAP CRASH TEST. TO OTHER TESTS IT CONDUCTS ON NEW CARS.

. WITH SURPRISING RESULTS: THE MORE MODERATELY PRICED MIDSIZED. TESTED BETTER THAN THEIR LUXURY COUNTERPARTS.

"What we find good about this is that it means that the public doesn't have to spend a lot of money to get state of the art crash protection"

13 MIDSIZE CARS LIKE THE HONDA ACCORD. DODGE AVENGER. FORD FUSION. VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT AND NISSAN ALTIMA. ALL DID WELL ENOUGH TO EARN THE INSTITUTE'S NEWEST RATING OF TOP SAFETY PICK PLUS.

BUT NOT TOYOTA'S CAMRY.AND PRIUS V.

"We're still going to say that the Toyota Camry and Prius are a Top Safety Pick but they can't get the Top Safety Pick Plus award because of their poor performance in the small overlap crash test"

TOYOTA POINTED OUT IT HAS MORE TOP SAFETY PICKS THAN ANY OTHER AUTOMAKER.

AND, IN A STATEMENT, ADDED: "WITH THIS NEW TEST, THE INSTITUTE HAS RAISED THE BAR AGAIN AND WE WILL RESPOND TO THIS CHALLEMNGE AS WE DESIGN NEW VEHICLES".
