WORRIES OVER THE LOOMING FISCAL CLIFF IS HAVING A NEGATIVE IMPACT ON CONSUMER CONFIDENCE.
AND IT'S AFFECTING INVESTOR SENTIMENT.
OVER 100 BILLION DOLLARS WAS YANKED FROM STOCKS FOR THE THIRD YEAR IN A ROW.
OUR WELLS FARGO ADVISOR NICK CHLUMSKY IS HERE TODAY --
AND NICK. DO YOU EXPECT THIS TREND TO CONTINUE?
Return to index of stories...
Well, again, to reiterate from last week, we thought our leaders in Washington would have come to a compromise on taxes and spending to prevent us from going over the fiscal cliff. And at this point, I don't think that is going to happen. I believe what the markets are telling us right now is that we're probably going to go over the cliff but that a compromise will quickly follow sometime in early January.
Return to index of stories...
And unfortunately, the fear surrounding the fiscal cliff has significantly dragged down consumer confidence in the month of December, its biggest drop since the lowering of the US' credit rating back in August of 2011. And of course this a bit worrisome since the consumer makes up about two thirds of the US economy…A consumer that might already be challenged with fewer dollars to spend due to higher taxes starting in 2013.
Retail investors have also been skeptical of the prospects for growth in the US and the impending fiscal cliff. And for the third year in a row now, investors have pulled out over $150 billion from stock mutual funds and exchanged traded funds and have been plowing money into the safer havens of US bond funds, the most since the record set in 2009.
So if you're wondering, should you follow this trend, that is, steer away from stocks and invest in bonds, here's a few things to consider. First and foremost, the decision to invest in stocks will depend on your investment objective, your risk tolerance, and your time horizon. Having said that, I think it's important to point out that the market is up 12% year to date even in the midst of all of the uncertainty and politics in Washington.
And even though retail investors have pulled out over $450 billion in stocks from the market in the last three years, the market is up 25% since the beginning of 2010 which means that someone believes in stocks. And those believers have been institutional investors like hedge funds and pension funds, often referred to as the "smart money" that have been significantly adding to their stock positions. In short, stocks have done very well in the last three years.
And with interest rates still at record lows and likely to stay there through 2015, investors in short-term bond funds can expect meager returns. There is a greater opportunity to generate higher returns and a higher yield in large cap stocks than in short term bond funds. And with interest rates at near zero percent, money will eventually drift to asset classes with higher returns like stocks and real estate.
Another consideration to think about when deciding to invest in stocks is possible inflation. With as much stimulus as the federal government has pumped in the financial system and economy, there is a pretty high likelihood that we'll see inflation in the coming years. And if we do, you will want to have exposure to asset classes like stocks, commodities, and perhaps even precious metals.
Return to index of stories...
Fundamentally, stocks are better valued than bonds and will offer investors more opportunity for long term growth. But before you decide how much stock you should own, meet with your financial advisor to discuss their risks versus their rewards.

Some say yoga is the fastest growing sport in the nation, with an estimated
20 million people practicing regularly. But the latest trend among yogis is
that an ever-growing number of practitioners are.. pint-sized.

There are yoga classes for infants all the way up to teenagers. They even
have classes for toddlers like my daughter.
SOT: Liz Eustace, CEO Alignyo:
You're still going to see the foundation of yoga - so there's going to be an
awareness of movement, and anatomy and breath, tremendous creativity,
interplay between teacher and children.
Genevieve O/C:
I'm here with a group of 6-9 year-old yogis who are showing me a little
about what a kids' yoga class is like.
NATS:
One leg comes up, the other.
Teacher Lauren Chaitoff co-owner of Yogi Beans:
It's going to be little bit sillier, more playful/Kids are stressed, social
pressures and pressure in school.
SOT KIDS:
MOS LITTLE GIRL:
It clears you mind off something that's really bothering you.
MOS BROTHER AND SISTER:
After class is over it seems like I'm not so worried about my problems as
when I was in school.
Parents should look for a registered children's yoga instructor-a good
start is the Yoga Alliance website. Don't be afraid to ask a lot of
questions and be sure to develop a relationship with the teacher.
Experts - and parents - say the benefits extend well beyond the studio.
Mom Gail Tobias SOT:
After she is done with the class I find she's much more eager to go home and
sit and do her homework and be more focused.
EUSTACE SOT:
"There's also great resources online and through books and through DVDs so
whether you're in a small community or a larger community you can still
integrate a lot of the practices and teachings of kids yoga.

IT'S CALLED DYNAMIC PRICING.
"Dynamic pricing essentially is pricing things different for different people at different times, for the same product."
JOHN SIMPSON OF CONSUMER WATCHDOG-DOT-ORG SAYS IT'S UNFAIR TO SHOPPERS.

PROFESSOR HANSSENS SAYS BEAT THEM AT THEIR OWN GAME.
