AS LAWMAKERS STRUGGLE TO MAKE A DEAL TO AVERT THE FISCAL CLIFF.
AND AS TAHMAN BRADLEY REPORTS, NO COMPROMISE IS IN SIGHT.
Return to index of stories...
It may already be too late.
Five days before the fiscal cliff.and with the House of Representatives
out of town until Sunday.Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid admitted a deal
seems unlikely.
Sen. Harry Reid-SOT-
I HAVE TO BE VERY HONEST.I DON'T KNOW TIME-WISE HOW IT CAN HAPPEN NOW.
In a scathing attack, Reid pointed blame on House Speaker John Boehner for
letting members stay home with no deal in sight.
Sen. Harry Reid-SOT-
WE'RE HERE IN WASHINGTON WORKING. WHILE THE MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF
REPRESENTAIVES ARE OUT WATCHING MOVIES AND WATCHING THEIR KIDS PLAY SOCCER
AND BASKETBALL./JOHN BOEHNER SEEMS TO CARE MORE ABOUT KEEPING HIS
SPEAKERSHIP THAN KEEPING THE NATION ON A FIRM FINANCIAL FOOTING.
The Speaker's office responded in a statement:
"Senator Reid should talk less and legislate more. The House has already
passed legislation to avoid the entire fiscal cliff. Senate Democrats have
not."
President Obama returned to Washington today for a last minute push.
Before leaving vacation in Hawaii, he had separate phone conversations with
Congressional leaders. But it's not clear those talks helped.
Washington's failure to avoid the cliff threatens to undermine the fragile
US economic recovery.as Americans face big tax hikes on New Year's Day.
Adding to the mess, the Treasury Department is warning that the government
will soon be unable to pay its bills.

THERE'S ANOTHER PIECE OF PENDING LEGISLATION THAT COULD HURT YOUR WALLET.
IF LAWMAKERS DON'T AGREE ON A NEW FARM BILL SOON, WE COULD SEE MUCH HIGHER PRICES FOR MILK.
ASHLEY YARCHIN HAS THE STORY.
Return to index of stories...
DIVE INTO ANY FAMILY FRIDGE AND YOU'D FIND PRETTY MUCH THE SAME PRODUCTS PACKED INTO THAT OF DAVE DRENNAN.
Well, we got some specialty cheeses here we got as a gift for Christmas.
BUT UNLIKE YOU OR ME, HE PAYS MORE ATTENTION TO CERTAIN ITEMS AS THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE MISSOURI DAIRY ASSOCIATION.
It's uncharted waters for us. We have no idea what's gonna happen.
WHILE NOTHING'S SET IN STONE, EARLY PREDICTIONS FOR MILK PRICES ARE SOUR.
IN THE NEW YEAR, THEY COULD DOUBLE.
RIGHT NOW, AN AVERAGE GALLON OF MILK COSTS THREE-DOLLARS-AND-60-CENTS, SO PRETTY SOON IT COULD BE UP TO EIGHT DOLLARS A POP.
If dairy prices rise too fast to a higher level that folks can't afford, there are so many alternatives in the market place, from the power drinks, the nutrition drinks, the sodas, the waters and all that that competition people will switch.
AND FINANCIAL ANALYST JULI NIEMANN DOESN'T SEE THAT HAPPENING BUT RATHER ENVISIONS THE DAIRY BILL DRYING UP FAMILIES' DISPOSABLE INCOMES.
When you're only paying a certain percentage of your income in food and that percentage starts rising, then you have less money to spend on toys, games, prizes, clothing, furniture, in other words discretionary items.
AND ALL OF THOSE FEARS HAVE A FOUNDATION ON CAPITOL HILL, WHERE TIED UP IN TALKS ABOUT THE FISCAL CLIFF IS ALSO THE FARM BILL, WHICH INCLUDES THE DAIRY SECURITY ACT.
WITHOUT A DECISION BY YEAR-END, U.S. FARM POLICY WOULD REVERT BACK TO THE AGRICULTURE ACT OF 1949, WHICH MAKES MILK GO UP BASED ON INFLATION - CAUSING THAT SWELL IN THE SUPERMARKET.

STATE LEADERS FEAR A STRIKE, COMBINED WITH THE FISCAL CLIFF, WILL DELIVER A KNOCKOUT PUNCH TO THE STATE'S AND COUNTRY'S ECONOMY.

KIRIT RADIA HAS OUR STORY FROM MOSCOW.
Return to index of stories...
Russia's President Vladimir Putin said Thursday he plans to sign a
controversial new law banning U.S. adoptions.
That dashes the hopes and dreams of hundreds of Americans who are trying to
adopt Russian orphans, many of them with special needs.
Russian officials have said even 46 cases which are close to completion will
be frozen those children will now be offered to Russian families.
American parents that thought they would be bringing home a child soon are
now left wondering if they'll ever see them again.
SOT PATRICK GRIFFIN: "It's a heartbreaking process because we've already
started preparing our home. Not remodeling, or painting, or buying furniture
or anything, but just preparing the emotional state of our home, of
ourselves and of our children for the change that is going to occur."
The ban on adoptions is believed to be Russia's retaliation for a set of
human rights sanctions passed by the U.S. Congress and signed into law this
month by President Obama.
Russia is the third most popular country for Americans to adopt over 60,000
of them have happened since the fall of the Soviet Union.
But recently, adoptions to the US have become a political football in Russia
. Officials here point to the cases of 19 Russian children who have died
after being adopted by Americans. The issue caught fire in 2010 when this
boy, Artyom, was put on a plane back to Russia by his adoptive mother in
Tennessee.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
CLOUDS COME BACK TOMORROW
The weather tomorrow will feature more clouds and warmer temperatures as the wind starts to shift more from the south. Tonight will be partly cloudy and another chilly evening is on the way. Temperatures will quickly drop into the 50's this evening and we will land in the 40's again tomorrow morning. Chilly mid-40's will be on the thermometers a few miles away from the Gulf and our beaches will stay in the lower 50's. As Friday afternoon rolls around you'll notice and increase in clouds and there may even be one or two isolated rain showers before sunset. Highs on Friday will climb to the mid 70's.
On Saturday, another cold front is forecast to cross southwest Florida. It looks like a very similar forecast to what we saw yesterday - a quick passing of some downpours in the late day followed by some partial clearing in the evening. Temperatures will get to 80 on Saturday before the front goes by. On Sunday I expect another cool day with a high around 65 to 70 degrees and lots of sunshine returning.
