A BLANKET OF FRESH SNOW COVERS THE SPOT WHERE A MOUNTAIN OF STUFFED ANIMALS. FLOWERS. AND CANDLES ONCE STOOD.

THE SIGN THAT LED TO SANDY HOOK ELEMENTARY HAS BEEN PULLED FROM IT'S HINGES.

BUT THIS MORNING. THERE WILL BE SCHOOL AGAIN.

"I'm not exactly sure how we're going to react to it.It's gonna be hard."

MOST EVERYTHING HERE HAS BEEN DIFFICULT SINCE THE ATTACK THAT KILLED 20 FIRST GRADERS, AND SIX STAFF MEMBERS AT SANDY HOOK.

TODAY, IN A NEW BUILDING. IN ANOTHER TOWN 7 MILES AWAY. SURVIVORS WILL BE TOGETHER AGAIN.

"They want to see their teachers.they wanna see their classes.they wanna get back into their routine."

FURNITURE HAS BEEN MOVED IN FROM THEIR OLD SCHOOL.

BOOK BAGS AND JACKETS PUT IN THE SAME PLACES THEY WERE WHEN STUDENTS RUSHED OUT.

THE SIGN OUTSIDE HAS EVEN BEEN CHANGED.

"If we can do anything to bring some type of, I don't think you can say normalcy, but some type of normal learning environment for these children and for the teachers to teach in then we're happy to do it.

STILL MOST IN THIS STRUGGLING COMMUNITY REALIZE LITTLE WILL BE "NORMAL".

"We have installed numerous different security devices at the school and we are going to remain a presence on location until further notice."

COUNSELORS WILL ALSO BE IN PLACE.

AS TEACHERS. STUDENTS. AND FAMILIES. ALL TRY TO FIND A BALANCE - BETWEEN WHAT'S BEEN LOST. AND HOW TO TRY AND MOVE-ON. Return to index of stories...

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

"Increasing clouds and rain chances"

It has been a warm start to the New Year and the warm afternoons will continue as a cold front remains stretched out to our north.

Now that the fog has lifted across the area, we'll continue to see lots of sunshine early in the day with a mix of clouds and sun during the late afternoon hours. A stray shower or two could come across our skies later today and into the evening, however the vast majority of us will stay dry. With a cold front to our north, our warm and humid airmass will stay in place with daytime highs in the upper 70s to 80°.

Tonight, clouds will begin to increase and shower prospects will be on the rise from Friday and into the weekend. Overnight, a couple of showers can't be ruled out and lows will bottom out in the lower half of the 60s.

Friday will be a mostly cloudy day, and although the rain chance is not all that great, a few passing showers will be in the forecast during the afternoon hours. Afternoon highs will also remain a few degrees warmer than average as they stay in the upper 70s.

Through the upcoming weekend, this weather system will stall across parts of Southwest Florida with more clouds and the chance for rain especially as we head into the Sunday timeframe. Unlike the past few cold fronts we've seen, this particular one will not bring us another shot of cool and dry air.

Partly sunny skies will resume by the first of the week with mainly dry weather with a slight drop in our humidity by Tuesday.

Return to index of stories...

OVERWEIGHT AND DEATH STUDY-PKG

EXTRA HOLIDAY CALORIES.

WE FOUND LOTS OF PEOPLE TRYING TO BURN THEM OFF AND ASKED SOME OF THEM ABOUT THEIR NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS.

"obviously it's to get fit. same one i had last year. but i'm determined to do it this year."

"to age with grace so that's my news year's resolution"

"well just keep the weight i'm at try not too pack on the pounds so."

"do you have any?"

"mine is to lose weight and if you share my new year's resolution a new study is probably going to make you feel better."

BEING OVERWEIGHT LOWERS RISK OF DEATH ACCORDING TO FINDINGS JUST RELEASED IN THE JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION.

CDC RESEARCHERS ANALYZED NEARLY 100 STUDIES FROM THE U-S AND AROUND THE WORLD DEALING WITH B-M-I BODY MASS INDEX AND DEATH RATES.

"there were almost 3 million people in all these studies and over 270 thousand deaths."

THOSE WITH A B-M-I IN THE OVERWEIGHT CATEGORY FARED BETTER THAN THOSE IN THE NORMAL WEIGHT CATEGORY.

"Sometimes that surprises people but they really should not be too surprised because in our categories of 97 studies, 80 per cent of them showed that there was lower mortality in overweight than in normal weight people."

THAT DOES NOT APPLY NOT IF YOU'RE B-M-I IS IN THE OBESE CATEGORY. Return to index of stories...
