FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

CLOUDS ON THE RISE

It is hard to believe that it is early January. All this sunshine has helped our temperatures climb into the lower 80s for several days now. With a cold front approaching from our north - will that all change? Not quite.

We are only expecting added cloud cover with this front. In fact, we will actually experience a warm up after it passes.

It is currently moving at a snail's pace, but eventually it will move over Southwest Florida and then stall on top of us. It will essentially split the area in two. This means Central Lee County and areas North will see more clouds for Friday than areas South of Central Lee County.

Patchy dense fog can be expected for another night. Areas seeing the densest fog will be Collier County and our interior communities. Along with the fog we will start the day with a mostly cloudy sky and temperatures in the 50 to 60 degree range.

With the front hanging out on top of us we will stay mostly cloudy sky during the day. I would not be surprised if we had a few rogue showers to track on First Alert Live Doppler Radar, but the chance is less than 30 percent.

Daytime highs in the 80s can be expected across Collier County on Friday. Everyone else will hold in the upper 70s.

This front stays in place over the weekend. Saturday will be a partly cloudy but dry day. Sunday on the other hand will be different. Our weather pattern will get a little punch in the upper atmosphere, and that will instigate scattered showers for Sunday and Monday.

Our lonely front is finally getting kicked out on Monday, and once it does the sunshine will return. Sorry, but there is not cold air behind the front. 80 degree temperatures are expected next week, too. Return to index of stories...

TOSS TO NICK-OC

THE MARKETS DID WELL DURING AND AFTER THE PASSAGE OF THE FISCAL CLIFF DEAL.

WITH THE DOW CLIMBING NEARLY 500 POINTS BETWEEN MONDAY AND WEDNESDAY.

THERE WERE A LOT OF LAST-MINUTE NEGOTIATIONS AND CONFUSION REGARDING THIS DEAL.

WELLS FARGO FINANCIAL ADVISOR NICK CHLUMSKY JOINS US IN THE STUDIO TO HIGHLIGHT SOME OF THE MAJOR POINTS.

NICK. Return to index of stories...

WELLS FARGO ADVISORS-PLASMA

Well, it's nothing like truly waiting until the last minute to get this deal done. But it is done, for now. Of course the fiscal plan that was agreed to and signed was a much smaller version or mini plan of what was supposed to be addressed by our leaders in Washington. And unfortunately, the spending cuts or sequestration part of the plan wasn't addressed and was temporarily shelved for the next two months.

So at this point, we don't know to what extent spending cuts will happen but those negotiations will certainly command headlines and therefore steer the markets sometime in February. But let's focus on what we know now about taxes. Return to index of stories...

WELLS FARGO ADVISORS-CG

First, personal income tax rates for families making less than $450,000 will not change and will remain at their existing Bush-era tax bracket levels; however, for those families with incomes above $450,000, any income in excess of this level will now be taxed at 39.6%.

Second, the tax rate on long term capital gains and qualified dividends will remain at the favorable 15% for families earning less than $450,000. For families earning over $450,000, that capital gains and dividend tax rate will increase from 15% to 20%.

Third, the estate tax will be increased from a top tax rate of 35% to 40% with a $5 million exemption which will be indexed to inflation moving forward into the future.

Last, the alternative minimum tax was patched to avoid raising taxes by raising the exemption levels for individuals with the exemption increasing from $33,750 to $50,600 and for married couples filing jointly with the exemption increasing from $45,000 to 78,750. These exemption levels will also be indexed to going forward.

One area the cliff deal didn't address were payroll taxes and as a result the rate for payroll taxes for workers used to fund Social Security will increase from 4.2% to 6.2% which will likely increase taxes for approximately 77% of American Households.

Now for families who have been worried about losing thousands of dollars of tax breaks…You can stop worrying. The Child Tax Credit that was scheduled to drop from $1,000 to $500 per child will remain at $1,000 per child. The American Opportunity Tax Credit that was schedule to drop from $2,500 to $1,800 will now remain at $2,500 allowing millions of Americans to help pay for their children's higher education.

Finally, the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit scheduled to drop from $6,000 per family to $4,800 per family will remain at $6,000 for child-care related expenses. Return to index of stories...

WELLS FARGO ADVISORS-PLASMA

So at least you now have a better idea of what taxes will look like for the foreseeable future and can plan accordingly. Unfortunately, our folks in Washington really only got half of the deal done. A second fiscal cliff deal addressing spending cuts will now have to be hashed-out in the next two months. Let's hope our leaders can successfully come to a compromise on this issue so that an all out debt ceiling debate doesn't emerge. Return to index of stories...

IT'S ESTIMATED 70% OF ADULTS IN THE U-S HAVE EXPERIENCED A TRAUMATIC EVENT AT LEAST ONCE IN THEIR LIVES, & UP TO 20% WILL GO ON TO DEVELOP PTSD. THAT GOES FAR BEYOND THOSE IN THE MILITARY. IN TODAYS HEALTH MATTERS, AMY OSHIER EXPLAINS THAT PTSD CAN STRIKE ON THE HOME FRONT. Return to index of stories...

A HURRICANE, CAR CRASH, PHYSICAL ASSAULT. ALL THREE EXTRAORDINARY EVENTS. ANY OF THE THREE CAN LEAD TO POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER.

DR. OMAR RIECHE/DIR. BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CENTER

RUNS:

:35 It's usually after an exposure to an event that seems to be out of the ordinary, traumatic. We think about abuse, we think about a natural disaster where individuals feel their safety feels threatened. Our brains have a way of taking all that information in from our sensory input and really processing that and helping us move forward. But there are times our brains are not able to do that correctly.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

If you thought PTSD was strictly a military problem, think again. Experts say it can happen anywhere, anytime, to anyone. It's impossible to know who will be a victim of chance.

DR. OMAR RIECHE/DIR. BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CENTER

RUNS:

2:33 Post Traumatic Stress Disorder really can affect any of us if the trauma is enough of a trauma and a person is exposed to a trauma multiple times. Take for example 9/11, we know that studies show there was a radius where people close by were effected to a greater degree but if they looked at the nation there was an increase of PTSD.

IT'S THOUGHT IF PEOPLE REPEATEDLY WITNESS A TRAUMATIC EVENT, IT CAN DREDGE UP PAST PERSONAL EXPERIENCES AND CREATE THE POTENTIAL FOR PTSD. AND SO CAN CERTAIN EVENTS: Rape VICTIMS HAVE A 49% CHANCe of developing ptsd. PEOPLE INVOLVED IN SERIOUS ACCIDENTS 17%,THOSE WHO WITNESS A DEATH OR INJURY 11% AND VICTIMS OF NATURAL DISASTER 4%. A VARIETY OF THERAPIES ARE HELPING PEOPLE REVERSE THE COURSE.

DR. OMAR RIECHE/DIR. BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CENTER

RUNS:

14:06 A lot of therapies can be very, very helpful. 15:58 Dialectic Behavioral Therapy utilizes relaxation techniques to help the person try to modulate their mood and control it. In fact at Lee Behavioral Health Clinic, we recently completed a DBT group for individuals who have been through trauma in their own life. By the first and second session patients are learning how to calm themselves down.

NO ONE GETS THROUGH LIFE UNSCATHED. THE KEY IS RECOGNIZING THE RISK AND CONTROLLING THE RESPONSE. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

"Increasing clouds and rain chances"

It has been a warm start to the New Year and the warm afternoons will continue as a cold front remains stretched out to our north.

Now that the fog has lifted across the area, we'll continue to see lots of sunshine early in the day with a mix of clouds and sun during the late afternoon hours. A stray shower or two could come across our skies later today and into the evening, however the vast majority of us will stay dry. With a cold front to our north, our warm and humid airmass will stay in place with daytime highs in the upper 70s to 80°.

Tonight, clouds will begin to increase and shower prospects will be on the rise from Friday and into the weekend. Overnight, a couple of showers can't be ruled out and lows will bottom out in the lower half of the 60s.

Friday will be a mostly cloudy day, and although the rain chance is not all that great, a few passing showers will be in the forecast during the afternoon hours. Afternoon highs will also remain a few degrees warmer than average as they stay in the upper 70s.

Through the upcoming weekend, this weather system will stall across parts of Southwest Florida with more clouds and the chance for rain especially as we head into the Sunday timeframe. Unlike the past few cold fronts we've seen, this particular one will not bring us another shot of cool and dry air.

Partly sunny skies will resume by the first of the week with mainly dry weather with a slight drop in our humidity by Tuesday. Return to index of stories...

01:31:50:00 the fact that they were two women that were a couple that still wanted to have-- a baby.

.So-- I donated.

BUT NOW THE 46 YEAR OLD IS CAUGHT UP IN A CHILD SUPPORT LEGAL BATTLE --NOT WITH THE COUPLE.BUT WITH THE STATE OF KANSAS.

SOT / WILLIAM MOROTTA / SPERM DONOR

no good deed goes unpunished

20:05:30

THE FORMER MECHANIC FOUND AN AD POSTED ON CRAIGSLIST. IT OFFERED $50. BUT HE DECIDED ALONG WITH HIS WIFE KIMBERLY TO TAKE NO PAYMENT.

SOT / KIMBERLY MOROTTA /

19:12:18 this is not at all what we signed up for*

MOROTTA SAYS HE SIGNED A LEGAL CONTRACT WITH THE BIOLOGICAL MOTHER, JENNIFER SCHREINER AND HER PARTNER AT THE TIME, ANGELA BAUER, GIVING UP ANY LEGAL PARENTAL RIGHTS.

THE COUPLE SPLIT IN 2010 BUT STILL CARE FOR THE CHILD TOGETHER.

SOT

****** we don't hold him financially responsible. i want to pay the bills. the state won't let me **** paraphrase

BAUER BECAME ILL LAST YEAR AND SCHREINER APPLIED FOR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE WITH THE STATE AND WAS REQUIRED TO DISCLOSE THE DONOR.

KANSAS DOESN'T RECOGNIZE SAME-SEX MARRIAGE AND BAUER COULD NOT LEGALLY ADOPT THE CHILD.

THE STATE IS SUING MOROTTA.FOR CHILD SUPPORT CITING A STATUTE THAT HE IS LEGALLY RESPONSIBLE BECAUSE HE AND THE COUPLE DID NOT USE A LICENSED PHYSICIAN FOR THE ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION.

sot / linda elrod / WASHBURN UNIVERSITY

18:26:44 the idea is state of kansas shouldn't be paying support if there is a person who is legally obligated to pay support*

IN A STATEMENT KANSAS OFFICIALS SAY THE STATE IS ENTITLED TO PURSUE CHILD SUPPORT COSTS

"In cases where the parties do not go through a licensed physician or a clinic, there remains the question of who actually is the father of the child or children. In such cases DCF is required by statute to establish paternity and then pursue child support from the non-custodial parent."

MOROTTA SAYS THE CASE HAS MADE HIM QUESTION HIS GOOD INTENTIONS.
