BUT AS YOU CAN SEE --
STUDENTS AND PARENTS WERE WELCOMED AT A NEW SCHOOL WITH OPEN ARMS --

THE LESSONS TODAY HAD LITTLE TO DO WITH ACADEMICS --
INSTEAD THE FOCUS WAS HOW TO MOVE ON.

IT'S BEEN LESS THAN THREE WEEKS SINCE THEY LOST 20 OF THEIR CLASSMATES AND SIX EDUCATORS, BUT THURSDAY SANDY HOOK ELEMENTARY STUDENTS WERE BACK IN CLASS.
"I think them getting on the bus is, for us, it's a movement forward so I think a lot of us are looking at that as, this is the next step."
THE SITE OF THE DECEMBER SHOOTING IS STILL PART OF AN ONGOING INVESTIGATION, SO THE FORMER CHALK HILL MIDDLE SCHOOL IN NEARBY MONROE WAS RE-PURPOSED, AND RENAMED SANDY HOOK.
"A great deal of thought and effort and volunteer work to make this as seamless as possible. Right now Chalk Hill has been transformed from a middle school to a very cheerful, nurturing elementary school."
TO GIVE THE STUDENTS A SENSE OF CONTINUITY, DESKS AND OTHER FAMILIAR OBJECTS WERE BROUGHT TO THEIR NEW SCHOOL.
"That's going to signify, ok I'm back at school, this isn't Chalk Hill, it's Sandy Hook. I'm back with my friends, I'm back with my teachers, and that's what they need in order to have the sense of security to dive back into school life."
WHAT IS DIFFERENT IS A HEAVY SECURITY PRESENCE, WITH MORE CAMERAS AND LOCKS, AND POLICE ONSITE.
"I think right now it has to be the safest school in America."
COUNSELORS ARE ALSO ON HAND, AND JITTERY PARENTS ARE WELCOME TO SPEND THE DAY AT THE SCHOOL.

BUT --
i think what i will do is then use one of the boards to explain what this project will do -- because its actually somewhat confusing. they arent just widening current metro parkway they are building an entire new bridge crossover. creating a new metro parkway. metro parkway now is proposed to become old metro parkway. metro would split. the bridge would go through vacant land starting near westwood/westchase apts area connecting to evans and fowler but still stopping expansion at hanson.
this project has been in the works for nearly 20 years to give motorists another route to use than us 41.
this would essentially give motorists another way to get from us 41 in south fort myers all the way over the caloosahatchee to north fort myers

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
CLOUDS ON THE RISE
It is hard to believe that it is early January. All this sunshine has helped our temperatures climb into the lower 80s for several days now. With a cold front approaching from our north - will that all change? Not quite.
We are only expecting added cloud cover with this front. In fact, we will actually experience a warm up after it passes.
It is currently moving at a snail's pace, but eventually it will move over Southwest Florida and then stall on top of us. It will essentially split the area in two. This means Central Lee County and areas North will see more clouds for Friday than areas South of Central Lee County.
Patchy dense fog can be expected for another night. Areas seeing the densest fog will be Collier County and our interior communities. Along with the fog we will start the day with a mostly cloudy sky and temperatures in the 50 to 60 degree range.
With the front hanging out on top of us we will stay mostly cloudy sky during the day. I would not be surprised if we had a few rogue showers to track on First Alert Live Doppler Radar, but the chance is less than 30 percent.
Daytime highs in the 80s can be expected across Collier County on Friday. Everyone else will hold in the upper 70s.
This front stays in place over the weekend. Saturday will be a partly cloudy but dry day. Sunday on the other hand will be different. Our weather pattern will get a little punch in the upper atmosphere, and that will instigate scattered showers for Sunday and Monday.
Our lonely front is finally getting kicked out on Monday, and once it does the sunshine will return. Sorry, but there is not cold air behind the front. 80 degree temperatures are expected next week, too.

THIS PAST NOVEMBER LEE COUNTY VOTERS GAVE THE THUMBS UP FOR SLOT MACHINES AT THE DOG TRACK IN BONITA.
BUT THE STATE LEGISLATURE MUST APPROVE IT.
There's going to be a lot of people that like more gaming, some people are opposed to gaming. So i'll be surprised if anything happens."
NEXT UP - THIS 'GOOD QUESTION' ABOUT EDUCATION.
DONNA WANTS TO KNOW WHEN THE GOVERNOR IS GOING TO PUT MONEY BACK INTO *PUBLIC EDUCATION, NOT *PRIVATE SUCH AS CHARTER SCHOOLS.
"This year my goal is to continue to increase funding for K through 12 education."
"With regard to Charter schools, what you want for your family - you want choice. You want to say all your children are different. My two daughters are different. So I want to make sure parents have choice.
