FORECAST OPEN
Return to index of stories...
THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
A fading cold front over Central and South Florida may manage to kick up a few showers this morning and then a few more during the heat of the day, but any rain that develops today will be pretty isolated and hit-or-miss.
Aside from a few showers, our sky will feature a mix of sun and clouds, leading to some very warm weather through the afternoon. The average high for this time of year is 75°, and we'll manage to warm several degrees beyond that with our daytime temperatures aimed to near 82° this afternoon.
Humidity levels will continue to stay pretty elevated through the course of the week, bringing the potential for some early morning patchy fog throughout the week, so you may have to contend with low visibility if you're commuting early in the morning close to sunrise.
By Tuesday the cold front that's been essentially parked across Central and South Florida will ultimately fade away, so our weather looks to stay fairly quiet through the remainder of the week with no major cold fronts headed our way.
The big story for us through the next several days will be in the temperature department as daytime highs warm to the low to mid 80s through the end of the week and overnight temperatures only cool down to the mid 60s! These numbers are about ten degrees above average for this time of year.
Even with the abnormally warm weather around, moisture will be very limited, so rain chances will continue to stay very slim through the upcoming weekend.

THE CITY OF FORT MYERS WANTS TO CRACKDOWN ON REGISTERED SEX OFFENDERS AND THEIR ACCESS TO CHILDREN.
A NEW ORDINANCE WOULD REQUIRE SEX OFFENDERS TO STAY AT LEAST 300 FEET FROM PARKS AND SCHOOLS.
BUT AS CLIFTON FRENCH REPORTS, ONE GROUP SAYS THIS RULE IS TOO STRICT AND STEPS ON THE RIGHTS OF CHILD PREDATORS.
Return to index of stories...
VERY FEW PEOPLE WOULD DISAGREE THAT IT'S IMPORTANT TO KEEP OUR CHILDREN SAFE FROM PREDATORS WHILE THEY'RE PLAYING AT A PARK OR WAITING FOR THE BUS.
BUT ONE GROUP SAYS AN ORDINANCE LIKE THIS COULD BACK FIRE.
WE'RE ALWAYS CREATING LAWS TO KEEP OUR CHILDREN SAFE.
AGE LIMITS ON DRINKING AND SMOKING.
SPEED LIMITS IN SCHOOL ZONES.
SO IT'S NO SURPRISE THAT A NEW FORT MYERS CITY ORDINANCE PRESENTED BY THE CHIEF OF POLICE WOULD ATTEMPT TO KEEP SEX OFFENDERS FURTHER FROM OUR CHILDREN. BY MAKING "CHILD SAFETY ZONES."
STU: "The purpose of this ordinance is pretty straight forward, it would keep registered sex offenders away from places like playgrounds, parks, schools, bus stops, even libraries."
BY REQUIRING THEY STAY BACK AT LEAST 300 FEET FROM POPULAR PLACES FOR CHILDREN OR OFFENDERS COULD FACE JAIL-TIME AND FINES.
AN ORDINANCE THAT SOUNDS GOOD TO MANY.
"The term sex offender casts fear when you say it, it triggers a primal response to protect our children."
THAT'S MARIA KAYANAN, AN ATTORNEY FOR THE AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION OF FLORIDA.
THE STATE ALREADY RESTRICTS SEX OFFENDERS FROM LIVING WITHIN A-THOUSAND FEET OF MANY OF THOSE PLACES.
SHE BELIEVES THE ORDINANCE IS A PLOT TO PUT SEX OFFENDERS BACK IN JAIL. AND TO PUSH THEM OUT OF THE COMMUNITY.
BUT IT'S SOMETHING SHE SAYS COULD HAVE SOME BAD CONSEQUENCES.
SOT: "When laws are enacted that so over-regulate and so over-reach an individual's every movement, that's not good for that individual and will likely drive him or her off the grid, underground and outside the supervision of law enforcement, making the children in our communities less safe."
WHILE IN THE ORDINANCE. THE CHIEF OF POLICE INSISTS IT'S ANOTHER LAYER TO KEEP THE CITY'S CHILDREN SAFE.
LEE COUNTY ALREADY HAS "CHILD SAFETY ZONES."
THIS ORDINANCE IS NEARLY IDENTICAL TO THE COUNTY ORDINANCE.
TODAY THE COUCIL WILL VOTE TO ADVERTISE THE ORDINANCE.
IT WILL THEN GO UP FOR A PUBLIC HEARING AT A LATER MEETING.

Return to index of stories...
THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
TEMPERATURES SOARING BY MIDWEEK
It was a wet start to our first full week of 2013, but we're now trading the rain in for sunshine and much warmer temperatures.
How warm? We're talking mid 80s!
So let me show you how this will all transpire. We're seeing the skies clear tonight as the frontal boundary that brought us the gloomy weather begins to weaken. You can't rule out some very low clouds through the wee hours of Tuesday, but overall it'll be a clear night. Come sunrise we will definitely see areas of fog as temperatures drop to the lower 60s.
From there forward the sunshine pops out and it's here to stay.
Why? Simple, a big mountain of high pressure is moving over the East Coast. That's going to keep our weather sunny, dry, and very warm from Tuesday through the beginning of next week.
Morning lows will continue to be around 60 degrees, and daytime highs will soar to the mid 80s. Tuesday we will see a high of 83, Wednesday a high of 84, and then Thursday we get all the way up to 85 degrees. I wouldn't be surprised if some areas saw temperatures a little above 85 in the days to come.
If you want cold temperatures… You'll have to go north. There isn't a cool down expected for us until mid January.
Enjoy living in paradise!

PRINCE CHARLES GAVE A RARE TELEVISION INTERVIEW, HIS TOP CONCERN - THE ENVIRONMENT AND PRINCE HARRY'S MILITARY SERVICE.
NBC'S MICHELLE KOSINKSI REPORTS ON THE INTERVIEW FROM LONDON.
Return to index of stories...
In a rare interview, Prince Charles says he feels he will have to answer to his royal grandchild-- on the state of the environment.
Q- Well you are soon to be a grandfather for the first time so many congratulations.
"Very very old./I don't want to be confronted by my future grandchild saying why didn't you do something. It makes it even more obvious to try and make sure we have them leave them something that isn't a totally poisoned chalice."
Prince Charles, heir to the throne, is also a military parent.
And his immediate worry is Prince Harry, serving his fourth month as an Apache helicopter pilot in Afghanistan.
In September, his base was attacked by the Taliban.
It's his second tour of duty.
"You worry all the time. Certainly every night before I go to bed I worry. And you know he loves doing what he's doing. He's brilliant at it. I think he's helping to keep the nasties' heads down and protecting our troops on the ground. But I do know, yes. I constantly meet the families of those who've lost their sons or husbands or brothers or sisters. I have some understanding at least of what they go through."

On their way to court from the Delhi jail where they are being held. Five of
those accused over the brutal gang rape of the 23 year old university
student. This was a preliminary hearing taking place in the highly charged
atmosphere the case has provoked in India.
Security had been stepped up in court and outside demonstrators had gathered
once again. Inside the building there was such a scrum, dozens of lawyers,
journalists, and onlookers trying to cram into the court room that the
magistrate ordered that the hearing take place behind closed doors.
PROTESTER NATS
The protesters outside say they will not allow any lawyer to defend the
accused.
This lawyer though says they do have the right to be defended, hang them by
all means he says if they are proved guilty but they should at least be
given a fair chance.
The student was attacked on this bus on December the 16th. She died later
from massive internal injuries during her ordeal.
WATER CANNON NATS
The eruption of the public anger of the case and over the treatment of women
led to clashes during this protest in the heart of Delhi.
Today's events at the court show that the sense of outrage and the profile
of the case have hardly diminished
