It's also interesting to note that the warmest daytime high temperature in the month of January ever recorded at Page Field is 88 degrees. BUT WITH ABOVER AVERAGE TEMPERATURES SO FAR THIS WINTER, NOT EVERYONE IS WELCOMING THE WARMTH.
00.42.09 it could hurt us.
AT BOB JOHNSON'S U-PICK CITRUS FARM IN LEE COUNTY, THE WARM TEMPERATURES COULD LEAVE HIM CASH STRAPPED NEXT YEAR.
THE PROBLEM---HIS ORANGE TREES ARE BLOOMING TWO MONTHS AHEAD OF SCHEDULE.
00.46.17 These are even little oranges already and if we get a cold spell that's going to burn them things back, and they'll die.
MOTHER NATURE IS TRICKING THE TREES---MAKING THEM THINK IT'S THE START OF SPRING.
INSTEAD OF GETTING COLD AT NIGHT AND FORCING THE TREES TO GO DORMANT, THE WARM WEATHER IS MAKING THE TREES GROW NEW LEAVES AND BLOOM EARLY.
WHILE IT'S ENOUGH TO CAUSE FARMERS CONCERN FOR NEXT YEAR'S CROP---JOHNSON ISN'T HOLDING HIS BREATH JUST YET.
00.43.56 Who knows what's going to happen, we could get a nice cold spell and set everything back and start over again.
AN EXTENSION AGENT SAYS TREES CAN HAVE MULTIPLE BLOOMS, SO IF ONE OF THESE DIE, THERE'S STILL A CHANCE THESE TREES WILL PRODUCE FRUIT.
AND THAT'S WHAT FARMERS---AND CUSTOMERS--HOPE HAPPENS.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
RECORD HEAT IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA
We hit 88 degrees at Page Field in Fort Myers today … and that sets a new record high temperature for this date. The old record was set back in 1974 and was 85 degrees. It's also interesting to note that the warmest daytime high temperature in the month of January ever recorded at Page Field is 88 degrees. So, today's record ties the all-time January high temperature as well.
The forecast tonight is for quiet and mild weather. Skies will be partly cloudy and, unlike last night, there are no showers on the radar this evening. Temperatures tonight will dip below 70 and land in the upper 60's by tomorrow morning. As a side note: the average low for this time of year is 54 and the average high is 74. We are obviously predicting weather much warmer than that!
A large area of high pressure is anchored in the Atlantic and will continue to deliver warm southeasterly winds across the area. Under partly cloudy skies we will be back in the mid to upper 80's by tomorrow afternoon. In fact, we may tie or set another record high again tomorrow.
The long-range computer forecast guidance doesn't look very promising for rain. Only the errant shower could pop up in the afternoon as the humidity and heat continue through the rest of the week. The weekend outlook looks great for a trip to the beach with high temperatures still getting into the 80's each day.

THE PAP SMEAR HAS PROVEN TO BE A SIMPLE, EFFECTIVE TEST FOR CERVICAL CANCER -- AND THE DROP IN DEATHS FROM THE DISEASE HAS MADE IT THE GOLD STANDARD SCREENING TOOL.
NOW RESEARCHERS ARE TRYING TO APPLY THE TEST'S SUCCESS TO OVARIAN AND ENDOMETRIAL CANCER.
"One of the reasons we're so excited about this research is that there are no screening tests for ovarian cancer, and it's such a deadly disease because it is detected so late."
RESEARCHERS AT JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY ASSEMBLED A LIST OF GENETIC MUTATIONS COMMON IN OVARIAN AND ENDOMETRIAL CANCERS. THEY THEN EVELOPED A TEST THAT COULD SPOT THESE MUTATIONS IN FLUID TAKEN FROM A PAP SMEAR.
"In 100% of endometrial cancers we can find the exact same mutation in a tumor and a pap smear sample."
THEY WERE ALSO ABLE TO DETECT NEARLY HALF OF OVARIAN CANCERS.
THE RESEARCHERS COMPARED PAP SMEAR SAMPLES FROM HEALTHY WOMEN AND THOSE ALREADY DIAGNOSED WITH THE DISEASE. ONE OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT FINDINGS IS WHAT THEY DIDN'T FIND -- NO FALSE POSITIVE RESULTS.
"If you were told you have a diagnosis of cancer and you don't, not only is that anxiety provoking, but you have to undergo lots of unnecessary tests that can be invasive and dangerous."
SO FAR THE TEST HAS ONLY BEEN STUDIED IN THE LAB. RESEARCHERS HOPE TO HAVE A VERSION FOR THE DOCTOR'S OFFICE READY IN THREE TO FIVE YEARS.
