RECORD HIGH FOR JANUARY-WX CTR

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

RECORD HEAT IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

We hit 88 degrees at Page Field in Fort Myers today … and that sets a new record high temperature for this date. The old record was set back in 1974 and was 85 degrees. It's also interesting to note that the warmest daytime high temperature in the month of January ever recorded at Page Field is 88 degrees. So, today's record ties the all-time January high temperature as well.

The forecast tonight is for quiet and mild weather. Skies will be partly cloudy and, unlike last night, there are no showers on the radar this evening. Temperatures tonight will dip below 70 and land in the upper 60's by tomorrow morning. As a side note: the average low for this time of year is 54 and the average high is 74. We are obviously predicting weather much warmer than that!

A large area of high pressure is anchored in the Atlantic and will continue to deliver warm southeasterly winds across the area. Under partly cloudy skies we will be back in the mid to upper 80's by tomorrow afternoon. In fact, we may tie or set another record high again tomorrow.

The long-range computer forecast guidance doesn't look very promising for rain. Only the errant shower could pop up in the afternoon as the humidity and heat continue through the rest of the week. The weekend outlook looks great for a trip to the beach with high temperatures still getting into the 80's each day. Return to index of stories...

NEW AT SIX--

A COLLIER COUNTY COMMUNITY IS DEMANDING HELP.

A TEMPORARY BRIDGE IN GOLDEN GATE ESTATES IS A LIVING NIGHTMARE FOR PEOPLE WHO LIVE NEARBY.

THE BRIDGE IS ON 23RD STREET SOUTHWEST.

IT'S A DETOUR WHILE CREWS WORK TO REBUILD THE WHITE BOULEVARD BRIDGE.

FAMILIES ARE CONCERNED ABOUT THE THEIR SAFETY. WITH ALL THE ADDED TRAFFIC.

SO WE SENT NBC 2'S RICK RITTER TO INVESTIGATION. AND HE FOUND TRASH DAY TOOK ON A WHOLE NEW MEANING. Return to index of stories...

GGE BRIDGE DEBACLE-BNR-PKG

Rick Ritter/News at 6:00/9:36:45 " It's a recipe for disaster here on this Golden Gate Estates street. Today was trash day - something residents were dreading since the temporary bridge opened. They say the road is too narrow for trash trucks and cars to pass one another when passing by. Sure enough, that's the case. Take a look - one owners mailbox was ripped out of the ground this morning along with their trash can split and garbage thrown everywhere. The same problem for most residents on the street."

ONE TRASHCAN AFTER ANOTHER DESTROYED.

Tony Jacobson/GGE/9:25:08 "This is going to be a disaster."

TRAFFIC BACKED UP WITH CARS THAT BARELY FIT ON THE ROAD.

Tony Jacobson/9:23:43 "You have to pretty much stop almost, just to let people by."

THESE ARE SOME OF THE LATEST ISSUES AT WHAT USED TO BE A DEAD END NEIGHBORHOOD ON 23RD STREET SOUTHWEST.

TRAFFIC IS BEING RE-ROUTED THERE---WHILE CREWS WORK ON A 1.9 MILLION DOLLAR PROJECT TO REBUILD WHITE BOULEVARD BRIDGE.

Dr. Fritz Lemoine/GGE/9:30:29 "Its going to be a continued problem from here on out."

WHAT WAS A NARROW ROAD TO BEGIN WITH--IS NOW ONE OF THE MOST HEAVILY TRAVELED AREAS IN THE ESTATES---ONE THAT'S COSTING HOMEOWNERS A CHUNK OF THEIR PROPERTY.

Tony Jacobson/9:23:30 "You can hear the thump, thump, thump with their tires constantly off the road because the streets aren't wide enough."

DR. FRITZ LEMOINE'S PROPERTY GOT HIT THE WORST.

Dr. Fritz Lemoine/9:27:41 "Good morning, eh?"

HE AND HIS FAMILY WOKE UP TO FIND THEIR MAILBOX TAKEN OFF BY A TRUCK - AND THEIR TRASHCAN SPLIT INTO PIECES.

Dr. Fritz Lemoine/GGE/9:32:36 "Someone had to be dodging another car or another truck coming in the opposite direction to be able to kiss my mailbox and garbage can goodbye."

WE REACHED OUT TO COUNTY OFFICIALS BUT THEY DECLINED TO COMMENT---ACKNOWLEDGING THAT THEY'RE AWARE OF THE SITUATION.

THE COUNTY INSTALLED SIGNS AND SPEED BUMPS TO SLOW TRAFFIC DOWN--AND EVEN ADDED EXTRA PATROL.

WHILE THE TEMPORARY BRIDGE IS EXPECTED TO BE UP UNTIL SUMMER--RESIDENTS SAY THE STREET ISN'T GETTING ANY WIDER---AND THAT THE WORST IS YET TO COME.

Dr. Fritz Lemoine/9:31:29 "If this is property damage during the day, what about personal lives that could easily be in danger?"

FORT MYERS POLICE OFFICER TONY BROWN HAS A WAY OF TALKING TO PEOPLE.

hey hows it goin

IT'S ONE OF THE REASONS PEOPLE TRUST HIM.

1:00:28 I build up a rapport with a lot of the people in the community, so I usually get out of my car, go talk to them and a lot of times I've even arrested them but when I arrest them, it's not like I treat them like dirt 44

THAT TRUST- HELPS SOLVE CRIMES.

1:02:20 they're more willing to tell you hey this person did it or this person right here did it. 24

THIS TYPE OF COMMUNITY POLICING IS THE KEY TO A SAFER CITY ACCORDING TO CHIEF DOUG BAKER.

1:34:25 obviously the officers can't be everywhere at once so it's important that we receive that informational info from the tips from the community 32

THE CHIEF IS EVEN SEEKING SOLUTIONS FROM OTHER POLICE DEPARTMENTS ALL OVER THE COUNTRY.

ONE IDEA - AN ORDINANCE THAT FORCES CONVICTED FELONS WHO USE GUNS IN THEIR CRIMES TO REGISTER WITH POLICE ONCE THEY'RE OUT OF JAIL.

1:36:05 what I want to do, as a matter of fact I was just talking to washington dc police this morning as it relates to crime stoppers, as it relates to looking at offering possible rewards for tips and information 19

WHILE MORE IDEAS ARE GENERATED,

THE REST IS UP TO OFFICERS.

1:34:39 you're really looking at quality of life issues within a neighborhood or within a community 44

IT'S NOT ALWAYS EASY-

1:6:10 it's very hurtful a lot of times, because you never want to see anybody get killed 15

WHEN IT DOES HAPPEN-

THIS OFFICERS MISSION IS RENEWED.
