HE WAS MURDERED IN BROAD DAYLIGHT IN THE PARKING LOT OF A CHRISTIAN SCHOOL, WHILE TAKING HIS 5-YEAR-OLD SON LUNCH.
NOW, ONLY DAYS AFTER 27-YEAR-OLD KRISTOPHER SMITH WAS SHOT TO DEATH.
THE FORT MYERS POLICE DEPARTMENT IS UPPING THE ANTE.
SOT: Chief Baker, "I think it's the right time for us to say, you know, we're willing to sweeten the pot so to speak to attract individuals to come forward who may not have in the past."
STU: WORKING WITH CRIMESTOPPERS, FMPD IS OFFERING 25-THOUSAND DOLLARS FOR INFORMATION LEADING TO THE ARREST AND CONVICTION OF ANYONE INVOLVED IN A MURDER.
AND 5-THOUSAND DOLLARS FOR THE ARREST OF ANYONE INVOLVED IN A ROBBERY, VOILENT CRIME OR CARRYING AN ILLEGAL GUN,
SOT: "When you think about it, is a possible relocation money for that individual if they don't want to be here anymore or want to go do something else, there's a lot of things that could be turned around with that kind of money."
AND IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT THE CASE FROM LAST WEEK.
2012 WAS A DEADLY YEAR IN FORT MYERS WITH 24 TOTAL MURDERS.
AND WITHOUT PEOPLE COMING FORWARD, CHIEF BAKER SAYS IT'S TOUGH TO PUT THESE CRIMINALS BEHIND BARS.
AND HE'S HOPEFUL THIS NEW PUSH WITH CASH WILL WORK.
SOT: "If I didn't think it would work, I wouldn't have done it."

CHIEF BAKER GOT THE IDEA ABOUT THIS FROM A SIMILAR PROGRAM BEING DONE IN WASHINGTON DC, THAT HAS SEEN SOME SUCCESS.
THE CHIEF ALSO WANTS TO CHANGE THE OPEN PUBLIC RECORD LAWS TO KEEP THE IDENTITIES OF VIOLENT CRIME WITNESSES AND VICTIMS HIDDEN TO HELP PROTECT THOSE WHO COME FORWARD.
AS FOR WHERE THIS MONEY IS COMING FROM, I WAS TOLD THEY WILL BE USING FEDERAL FORFEITURE DOLLARS, ANONYMOUS DONATIONS AND, IF NEED BE, THEY'LL ASK FOR MORE MONEY FROM THE CITY.

Our spring like weather pattern will continue as the work week comes to a close with unseasonably warm weather heading into the weekend.
The air conditioners will most likely be on this morning as lows have settled into the middle and upper 60s. A few patches of fog will be possible across our inland communities with mainly clear skies as we start the day.
A strong area of high pressure that has anchored itself across the Bahamas and the western Atlantic will keep mostly to partly sunny skies in the forecast this afternoon. Daytime highs will climb into the middle 80s, which is close to 10° above the norm for this time of year.
Heading into this evening, our weather will remain dry with overnight lows slipping into the middle 60s under mostly clear conditions.
High pressure that's in control of our weather will block any weather systems or cold fronts from entering our part of the state. This will lead us to a nice, but warm weekend.
Southeasterly winds will set up across the peninsula through early next week, which will keep a warm and more humid airmass over the area. The next cold front on the map looks to arrive by this time next week.

Return to index of stories...
We're starting out our list with a Collier County man accused of the heinous crime of molesting two young girls. Jose Soto Hernandez has gone into hiding since the two charges of lewd and lascivious molestation were levied against him. According to detectives, Hernandez was an authority figure to the young girls, however imploded that trust when he allegedly molested them. This 300 pound, 27 year old fugitive has a history of drug use, burglary and grand theft, but these latest charges definitely trump any crimes he's committed in the past. Hernandez, who also uses the alias of Angel Soto and the street name of "Toro," was last known to be living in Immokalee, and could be moving around amongst various homeless shelters in the area.
Also dodging the guys in green this week is Rosa Rodriguez, on the run after violating terms of her probation following multiple counts of battery on a law enforcement officer. Year after year, Rodriguez has openly displayed her distaste for deputies in a less than ladylike fashion. After being involved in a minor car crash, Rodriguez was treated by firefighters for her injuries. She immediately became combative with the men who were trying to help her, and ended up ripping off the restraints on the backboard and kicking two emergency workers in the groin and face. On another occasion, while incarcerated for a different crime, she hid a cup in her jail cell, then filled it up with toilet water and threw it at corrections officers three times - spraying them both in the face. Altogether, Rodriguez has been arrested eight times in Lee County, and with your help, this violent offender will be headed back for booking number nine. Rodriguez was last known to be living in Cape Coral, and upon her arrest, she will be held without bond.
And in Collier County, the search is on for Michael Allen Schwenke - wanted for failing to show up in court following an arrest for dealing in stolen property and providing false information to a pawn broker. 39 year-old Schwenke is a repeat offender, with previous arrests for fraud and other related charges. Records show he had been working as a convenience store manager before his troubles with the law escalated. Now, he's trying to stay off the radar, and out of jail. Schwenke is 6'3", 205 pounds, and has a tattoo of a wizard on his upper left arm.
Rounding out our list of law breakers is Lynell Scott, who recently violated his probation after an arrest for aggravated assault, armed robbery and kidnapping. According to deputies, Scott chucked a park bench-type chair through the victim's front window in order to get inside. He found the female victim in her bedroom, and pulled a knife on her, demanding cash - which she did not have on her. Still wielding the weapon, he forced her to drive to an ATM to withdraw as much money as possible, then directing her to a nearby gas station where he picked up some water and a pack of cigars. The victim said Scott told her to drop him off at his grandmothers house, after which she immediately called 9-1-1. Scott spent just over two months in jail for the crime before being released on bond - and placed on the probation which he has now violated. Scott was last known to be living in Lehigh Acres and has tattoos of dice and a rosary on his left arm and the word "pain" on his right arm.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
