FIRST ALERT FORECAST-CLIP

FORECAST OPEN Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

The warm air is still solidly entrenched across Southwest Florida with afternoon temperatures on track to return to the lows to mid 80s during the heat of the day.

Over the weekend we managed to tie and even break some records highs, but since today's record is 86°, that will be more challenging with highs projected to reach 83° in most spots. Coastal communities will stay slightly cooler, though, under the influence of the gulf breeze, keeping highs there in the upper 70s and low 80s.

Some puffy, fair-weather clouds will form and float through our sky this afternoon, but sunshine will still be the major weather player.

Tonight our sky will stay mostly clear, but there's also a chance that a little fog could form around sunrise. Meanwhile, our temperatures will stay above average with lows only reaching the low 60s.

Tuesday will ultimately be a carbon copy of today with lots of sunshine and afternoon temperatures back in the low to mid 80s.

As we head through the remainder of the week, look for the unusually warm January weather to continue. With lots of sunshine around, temperatures will have to trouble reaching the low to mid 80s each afternoon through Thursday.

By Friday, we'll be tracking a band of moisture in association with a cold front that will slowly push down the Florida peninsula. At first, the main side effect for us will be an increase in cloud cover along with the possibility of a few hit-or-miss more showers. Eventually, however, long-range forecast models hint at some cold air making a push toward Southwest Florida by this time next week.

Until then, our weather will stay warm, sunny and mainly dry. Return to index of stories...

RESEARCHERS FOUND ONE IN THREE TEEN GIRLS HAVE SET UP IN-PERSON MEETINGS WITH PEOPLE THEY MET ONLINE.

GIRLS IN THEIR STUDY WHO HAD BEEN ABUSED WERE MORE LIKELY TO CREATE PROVOCATIVE ONLINE PROFILES, AND RECEIVE ONLINE SEXUAL SOLICITATIONS.

HIGH QUALITY PARENTING -- THOSE WHO CHECKED WHAT THEIR CHILDREN WERE POSTING AND WHO THEY COMMUNICATED WITH -- REDUCED THE RISKY ONLINE BEHAVIOR.

DIABETIC PAT SCHULKINS KNEW THE IMPORTANCE OF TAKING CARE OF HER FEET. BUT A TINY AN UCLER, ALMOST SLIPPED BY HER.

PAT SCHULKINS/DIABETIC FOOT PATIENT

RUNS:

1:43 I didn't notice it was there until I was putting cream on my foot. I felt something and looked at it in the mirror.

PEOPLE WITH DIABETES ARE PRONE TO FOOT PROBLEMS. THE DISEASE REDUCES BLOOD FLOW TO THE EXTREMITIES MAKING IT HARD TO HEAL INJURIES. IT ALSO CAUSES NERVE DAMAGE, SO PATIENTS MAY NOT FEEL THEIR FEET.

DR. ANDREW BELIS/PODIATRIST AND FOOT & ANKLE SURGEON

RUNS:

9:24 When you have diabetes and it goes uncontrolled and you developed neuropathy, the structure of your foot can slowly degrade and collapse.

THAT'S WHAT HAPPENED TO PAT. SHE HAD DEVELOPED CHARCOT OR ROCKER FOOT. THE BONES IN HER FOOT COLLAPSED PUTTING CONSTANT PRESSURE ON HER INSTEP.

2-SHOT DR. BELIS & AMY

RUNS:

:03 So that when you're walking the mid-foot is actually striking the group with more pressure then the front or the back and that can cause a sore spot to develop.

THE RESULT WAS AN ULCER THAT WOULDN'T HEAL.

DR. ANDREW BELIS/PODIATRIST AND FOOT & ANKLE SURGEON

RUNS:

3:11 We basically reconstructed her foot making it more of a natural shaped foot so there's not these high pressure spots where the ulcer or the bone would break through the skin and develop another ulcer again.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

Pat's story had a happy ending but not everyone is as fortunate. Each year more than half the amputations in this country result from diabetes.

DR. ANDREW BELIS/PODIATRIST AND FOOT & ANKLE SURGEON

RUNS:

1:33 Our goal is to avoid amputations, because people with amputations end up having a very poor 5-10 year of rate of living unfortunately.

FIXING THE BONE ISSUE, THROUGH A RECONSTRUCTIVE PROCEDURE, PUT PAT BACK ON SOLID GROUND.

PAT SCHULKINS/DIABETIC FOOT PATIENT

RUNS:

2:10: They re-built my whole foot, otherwise I don't think I'd have a foot today.

KATE DUE IN JULY-OC

THERE WILL BE A ROYAL BABY THIS SUMMER!

THE PALACE TODAY SAID THAT KATE MIDDLETON IS EXPECTED TO GIVE BIRTH IN JULY.

AND RUMORS ARE SWIRLING THAT SHE MAY BE HAVING TWINS.

HERE'S NBC'S ANNABEL ROBERTS WITH THE ROYAL SCOOP. Return to index of stories...

KATE DUE IN JULY-PKG

The statement from St. James Palace is short - but makes a few things clear.

First - there is only one baby.

There had been some speculation, given Kate has had such bad morning sickness, that maybe she's carrying twins.

Well that is not the case.

Only one royal baby is on the way and that baby will be born in July.

That's a little bit vague - no hint if it will be towards the beginning or end of the month - but for sure it will be a summer baby.

No word either on how many weeks pregnant Kate is - but she has clearly passed the all-important three month mark.

Had she not been hospitalized in December for acute morning sickness we would probably only be finding out now that she's pregnant.

The statement does make clear that the worst of the morning sickness is over, saying Kate is continuing to improve following her brief stay in hospital.

She certainly looked well when she and Prince William went to inspect her portrait at a London gallery last week.

REPORTER CLOSE:

IN THE STATEMENT THERE WAS NO MENTION - AND IT'S NOT REALLY SURPRISING - OF WHETHER THE BABY IS A BOY OR A GIRL.

SO THAT WILL KEEP US ALL GUESSING. AND THE BOOKMAKERS ARE BUSY TAKING BETS ON NAMES - WITH GEORGE, VICTORIA AND DIANA UP THERE WITH THE FAVORITES.

ALL WILL BE REVEALED IN JULY.

BACK TO YOU. Return to index of stories...

CANDICE COLEMAN THOUGHT HER RESUME HAD IT ALL.

BUT SINCE GRADUATING MORE THAN A YEAR AGO, SHE HASN'T BEEN ABLE TO FIND A JOB IN HER FIELD OF HEALTH SCIENCES.

"You spent four years, with a major and two minors, and it hasn't helped you at all."

SHE'S SENT OUT MORE THAN 30 RESUMES, BUT HASN'T LANDED ONE INTERVIEW. WITHOUT STEADY INCOME, CANDICE WAS FORCED TO MOVE BACK WITH HER PARENTS.

"Almost feeling like a failure because you have to come back and rely on them."

RECRUITING SPECIALIST YOLANDA OWENS WORKS WITH GRADS LIKE CANDICE EVERY DAY. HER FIRST TIP:

"Hang out with people who already have jobs."

MANY COMPANIES HAVE EMPLOYEE REFERRAL PROGRAMS, SO THERE'S A MONETARY INCENTIVE FOR RECOMMENDING YOU. NETWORKING IS VITAL, BUT YOLANDA SAYS DON'T GIVE SOMEONE YOUR RESUME UNTIL YOU HAVE THREE MEANINGFUL CONTACTS WITH THEM.

"Someone who doesn't know you from a can of paint is not going to trust you enough to be able to recommend you for a position."

YOLANDA ALSO SAYS MAKE YOUR RESUME AS SPECIFIC AS POSSIBLE AND QUANTIFY IT. DON'T JUST SAY YOU RAISED MONEY, SAY HOW MUCH YOU RAISED. ALSO, MAKE IT SIMPLE - BULLET POINTS, NOT PARAGRAPHS. GIVE THE EMPLOYER THREE WEEKS TO PROCESS, AND ONCE YOU GET AN INTERVIEW…

"Make sure you prepare a couple of stories about yourself that really display your leadership, your confidence and what you've done to improve your role."

CANDICE HOPES HER BIG BREAK WILL COME SOON, BUT SHE'S CONSIDERING GRAD SCHOOL.

"It's almost like college is the new high school diploma, and you have to have your masters to be considered."

A TOUGH ENVIRONMENT THAT A NEW GENERATION OF WORKERS WILL HAVE TO OUTSMART TO SUCCEED. I'M VANESSA WELCH REPORTING. Return to index of stories...
