DOZENS OF POLICE CARS AND A NEARLY FIVE HOUR STANDOFF.

THIS GEORGIA CRIME SCENE TRICKLES DOWN ALL THE WAY DOWN TO SOUTHWEST FLORIDA.

David Ehsanipoor/Effinghamn County Sheriffs Office/3:46 "It was probably one of the more, or most gruesome crime scenes I've ever seen."

IT HAPPENED ON FRIDAY IN EFFINGHAM COUNTY, GEORGIA. DEPUTIES SHOWED UP TO 34-YEAR OLD CHAD MORETZ'S HOUSE. HE USED TO LIVE 500-PLUS MILES AWAY IN GOLDEN GATE ESTATES.

AUTHORITIES WANTED TO QUESTION HIM ABOUT CHARLES RAY---A 35-YEAR OLD SAVANNAH MAN WHO DISAPPEARED NEW YEARS EVE.

THEY SAY WHEN THEY GOT THERE, MORETZ WAS INSIDE, ARMED WITH A GUN--TAKING HIS OWN WIFE HOSTAGE.

David Ehsanipoor/9:24 "Obviously Chad Moretz was a sick and disturbed individual."

AFTER HOURS OF WAITING---MORET'ZS WIFE WAS FINALLY ABLE TO GET AWAY.

David Ehsanipoor/5:58 "At that time, Chad Moretz walked out on his front doorstep and he was pointing at rifle at officers and that's when he was shot and killed."

EVEN MORE DISTURBING, DEPUTIES SAY THEY FOUND BODY PARTS BELONGING TO CHARLES RAY INSIDE THE HOME.

David Ehsanipoor/9:18 "Once you put all of the pieces together, it keeps unraveling."

Rick Ritter/News at 6:00 "Moretz's father Jeffrey is no stranger to Collier County either. You may remember back in 2011 when he allegedly walked through the doors here at Physicians Regional on Pine Ridge - and shot and killed his wife."

David Ehsanipoor/9:07 "Obviously he and his family are known to law enforcement down there."

WHILE JEFFREY MORETZ FACES SECOND DEGREE MURDER CHARGES AND AWAITS A PRE TRIAL CONFERENCE---A POSSIBLE MOTIVE BEHIND THE CRIME HIS SON IS ACCUSED OF REMAINS A MYSTERY, FOR NOW.

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

The warm air is still solidly entrenched across Southwest Florida with afternoon temperatures on track to return to the lows to mid 80s during the heat of the day.

Over the weekend we managed to tie and even break some records highs, but since today's record is 86°, that will be more challenging with highs projected to reach 83° in most spots. Coastal communities will stay slightly cooler, though, under the influence of the gulf breeze, keeping highs there in the upper 70s and low 80s.

Some puffy, fair-weather clouds will form and float through our sky this afternoon, but sunshine will still be the major weather player.

Tonight our sky will stay mostly clear, but there's also a chance that a little fog could form around sunrise. Meanwhile, our temperatures will stay above average with lows only reaching the low 60s.

Tuesday will ultimately be a carbon copy of today with lots of sunshine and afternoon temperatures back in the low to mid 80s.

As we head through the remainder of the week, look for the unusually warm January weather to continue. With lots of sunshine around, temperatures will have to trouble reaching the low to mid 80s each afternoon through Thursday.

By Friday, we'll be tracking a band of moisture in association with a cold front that will slowly push down the Florida peninsula. At first, the main side effect for us will be an increase in cloud cover along with the possibility of a few hit-or-miss more showers. Eventually, however, long-range forecast models hint at some cold air making a push toward Southwest Florida by this time next week.

Until then, our weather will stay warm, sunny and mainly dry. Return to index of stories...

TONIGHT A COLLIER COUNTY TODDLER IS SAFE, BACK HOME WITH HER FAMILY.

HER LATE-NIGHT DISAPPEARANCE SPARKED A STATE-WIDE AMBER ALERT.

SOME OF YOU RECEIVED THE ALERT ON YOUR SMART-PHONE.

MANY OF YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THE SEARCH FOR LITTLE DENISE UNTIL MUCH LATER.

Chad: "Did you, Rachel, receive an Amber Alert?"

Rachel: "I saw it on TV at 1:45. It came on my television but not on my phone."

That's why I'm curious to find out. Is it something you actually have to download and ask for.

NO DOWNLOAD NEEDED. WIRELESS EMERGENCY ALERTS GO OUT AUTOMATICALLY, IF YOUR PHONE IS CAPABLE. THAT'S A BIG *IF. IT ALL DEPENDS ON YOUR CARRIER.

AT & T

Verizon Wireless

ALMOST ALL MAJOR CARRIERS OFFER WIRELESS ALERTS. BUT ONLY ON CERTAIN NEWER PHONES. MANY OLDER DEVICES CAN'T SEND MOBILE ALERTS. EVEN SOME I-PHONES.

I have an iphone and I've never been given the option.

LAW ENFORCEMENT ISSUES AMBER ALERTS FOR A CERTAIN *REGION.

THEY GO OUT THROUGH LOCAL CELL TOWERS,

THAT MEANS YOU CAN GET THE MESSAGE EVEN IF YOU'RE JUST PASSING THROUGH WITH A DIFFERENT AREA CODE.

"an Amber alert has been issued in your area, please check local media."

SOME CALL THE AUTOMATIC ALERTS ANNOYING.

YOU CAN OPT OUT BY CHANGING YOUR PHONE'S SETTINGS.

THOUGH IT'S NOT SOMETHING THIS FATHER WILL BE DOING ANYTIME SOON.

I would never turn it off no, I'd turn off all the spam mail before I'd turn off a kid that's in trouble."
