The marked off swimming area, the bathrooms and storage building, and

larger signs dot along the waterfront. It's these improvements, the

university claims, were already planned before the tragic incident

happened. But the lawsuit claims some of these measures should have

been in place beforehand, and perhaps saved Joel Johnson's life. While

the school did have signs stating no swimming in the lake after the

posted hours, the lawsuit claims the school could have done more. It

alleges the university knew students swam in the lake at night, and

should have had more security or even roped off the lake to prevent

students from going in.

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

COOLER WEATHER ON THE HORIZON

One more day of 80 degree weather is in the forecast tomorrow, and some weather changes are on the way starting Thursday. I expect partly cloudy skies tonight with a low of 62 degrees by tomorrow morning. There will probably be another round of fog forming in the morning - mainly inland. The daytime forecast for Wednesday looks partly cloudy with a high of 82 degrees once again. This will make for 14 days of 80 degree weather this month!

On Thursday the forecast weather maps show a cold front moving toward Florida. This time, the front is expected to move through the state and by Friday we will see noticeably cooler air move down the peninsula. A few rain showers are possible on Thursday as the front arrives and high temperatures top out in the 70's. Skies will be cloudy on Thursday and some lingering clouds will be around on Friday. As you make your plans for the weekend, expect daytime highs in the 70's and overnight lows dropping back into the mid and lower 50's. The cooler weather that returns this weekend is actually more in line with typical January weather; however, indications point to even cooler weather possible by the middle of next week. FGCU MONEY NEEDED OR ONLINE COURSE INCREASE-2SH

F-G-C-U WANTS MONEY FROM THE STATE --

OR IT SAYS ITS PREPARED TO PASS ON COSTS TO A GROWING NUMBER OF STUDENTS.

RIGHT NOW THE SCHOOL IS THE ONLY ONE IN THE STATE THAT DOES NOT CHARGE A FEE FOR TAKING CLASSES ONLINE.

BUT AS N-B-C TWO'S KIM BROWN FOUND OUT --

THAT IS LIKELY TO CHANGE. Return to index of stories...

FGCU MONEY NEEDED OR ONLINE COURSE INCREASE-PKG

ONLINE CLASSES ARE POPULAR AT F-G-C-U.

It's easier to have an online class because then you can do it on your schedule.

ACCORDING TO DATA FROM LAST YEAR,

70 PERCENT OF STUDENTS TOOK AT LEAST ONE ONLINE COURSE.

nats

THAT'S NEARLY DOUBLE COMPARED TO NATIONAL AND STATEWIDE FIGURES.

I just took it to balance out my schedule so I can have a couple days off.

BUT TO OFFER THESE COURSES.

UNIVERSITY LEADERS NEED MORE MONEY.

For us to be able to do more to continuously improve and add new degrees, new programs, and courses we need additional resources.

THEY'RE ASKING STATE LEADERS FOR 13 MILLION IN STATE FUNDING.

THOSE DOLLARS WOULD MAKE UP FOR THE PAST FEW YEARS F-G-C-U HAS GROWN AND NOT RECEIVED ADDITIONAL MONEY TO COVER THE COST PER STUDENT.

IT WOULD MAKE THEM EQUAL TO OTHER SCHOOLS.

Each year were being comparatively under-funded by approximately 13 million dollars.

IF THEY DON'T GET IT.

ADMINISTRATORS ARE CONSIDERING A 'PAJAMA TAX.'

THAT'S A FEE CHARGED ON TOP OF TUITION FOR ONLINE COURSES.

IT WOULD BE ABOUT 30 TO 50 DOLLARS EXTRA PER CREDIT HOUR.

That's just an extra expense on what you're already paying for the classes.

FGCU IS THE ONLY STATE UNIVERSITY NOT CHARGING THIS FEE.

AND SOME STUDENTS SAY IF THAT CHANGES.

THEY LIKELY WON'T BE SIGNING UP IN THE FUTURE.

It's not something I just want to throw money out for to take a class online when I could go to class in the first place.
