GRIZZLY BEAR SEARCH-VOTOPS

Deputies are searching for a grizzly bear cub that ran away from a private residence in Golden Gate Estates on Tuesday morning.

The Collier County Sheriff's Office is assisting the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission in the search.

The 100-pound cub ran away from a residence in the 4000 block of DeSoto Boulevard around 11 a.m.

Deputies are cautioning residents in the area to be on alert for the cub and not approach it.

Wildlife officers advise anyone who may encounter the cub not to run. Rather, clap your hands and say, "Bear go home." The cub, which was raised in captivity, will likely run away.

Residents are advised to secure trash cans in their garage or enclosed area

Anyone who sees the cub is asked to contact the Collier County Sheriff's Office at 252-9300, or call the FWCC Wildlife Alert hotline at 888-404-FWCC.

ACCORDING TO CARLI SEGELSON WITH FWC

IT IS LEGAL FOR A PRIVATE PERSON TO OWN AND KEEP THE BEAR

THEY HAVE TO APPLY FOR A 'CAPTIVE WILDLIFE LICENSE' WITH THE STATE

ONCE YOU APPLY, LAW ENFORCEMENT COMES OUT AND INSPECTS WHERE THE ANIMAL WILL BE KEPT AND SIGN OFF OR NOT SIGN OFF ON THE LICENSE

THIS INFO IS PUBLIC RECORD

LEE COUNTY OFFICIALS ARE LOOKING TO DO THE SAME TO ITS AMBULANCE SERVICE.

we've got to look at some examples and now that we are in this hiatus - it's time to do that.

THE COUNTY'S TOP TWO E-M-S OFFICIALS LEFT AFTER THE MEDSTAR HELICOPTER PROGRAM WAS GROUNDED.

BEFORE THEY'RE REPLACED - THE COUNTY WANTS TO LOOK AT LETTING A PRIVATE COMPANY TAKE OVER THEIR POSITIONS.

Two companies have come forward to express interest in taking over the county's ambulance management - Grady EMS and Rural metro. The county will meet with them one on one in the next month.

IT'S NOT AN UNPRECEDENTED MOVE -

LARGER CITIES LIKE ORLANDO AND ATLANTA HAVE PRIVATIZED AMBULANCE SERVICES.

COMMISSIONER FRANK MANN SAYS NO JOBS ARE AT STAKE -

AND IT WOULD SAVE THE COUNTY UPWARDS OF 15 MILLION DOLLARS A YEAR.

"when you have that extra planning time sometime during the day, you can get ready here and then maybe, if you're switching to a different subject, you can get some of that stuff ready throughout the day" Jeff Harvey, Peace River Elementary Principal

PRINCIPAL JEFF HARVEY SAYS HIS TEACHERS HAVE STEPPED UP, DOING MORE WITH LESS - AND THAT'S NOT CHANGING

Nats

SUPERINTENDENT DOUG WHITTAKER TOLD LOCAL LEADERS HE'S EXPECTING MORE BUDGET CUTS NEXT SCHOOL YEAR.

"Yes, I'm convinced there will be positions which will have to go." Dr. Doug Whittaker, Superintendent

BECAUSE ENROLLMENT IN THE DISTRICT IS GOING DOWN, DOCTOR WHITTAKER SAYS THE DISTRICT WILL GET LESS STATE FUNDING.

EVEN WITH FEWER STUDENTS, THE BUDGET WILL BE TIGHT.

THE DISTRICT HAS ELIMINATED MORE THAN 300 JOBS OVER FOUR YEARS AND WANTS TO AVOID ANYMORE LAYOFFS.

WHITTAKER SAYS EVERYTHING WILL BE ON THE TABLE FROM CHANGING BUS ROUTES TO REDUCING ART AND MUSIC PROGRAMS IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS.

"We've really struggled and tried to keep them, I don't know whether we'll be able to do that next year or not." Dr. Doug Whittaker, Superintendent

HARVEY HOPES IT DOESN'T COME TO THAT.

"it's nice to see them when they're heading to the busses with their art projects or our chorus goes and sings at an event." Jeff Harvey, Peace River Elementary Principal

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

COOLER WEATHER ON THE HORIZON

One more day of 80 degree weather is in the forecast tomorrow, and some weather changes are on the way starting Thursday. I expect partly cloudy skies tonight with a low of 62 degrees by tomorrow morning. There will probably be another round of fog forming in the morning - mainly inland. The daytime forecast for Wednesday looks partly cloudy with a high of 82 degrees once again. This will make for 14 days of 80 degree weather this month!

On Thursday the forecast weather maps show a cold front moving toward Florida. This time, the front is expected to move through the state and by Friday we will see noticeably cooler air move down the peninsula. A few rain showers are possible on Thursday as the front arrives and high temperatures top out in the 70's. Skies will be cloudy on Thursday and some lingering clouds will be around on Friday. As you make your plans for the weekend, expect daytime highs in the 70's and overnight lows dropping back into the mid and lower 50's. The cooler weather that returns this weekend is actually more in line with typical January weather; however, indications point to even cooler weather possible by the middle of next week. The drug to treat the debilitating eye disease- is now available for the public.

Sot dr Alexander Eaton, retina health center

" This drug is really a significant step forward, it's the first drug in its class so it's really unique."

Naples resident Diane keen knows the importance of this breakthrough.

Sot Diane

"I can't do most things, I can't read, can't drive , sometimes it's hard to communicate if you can't see who youre talking to, so it's pretty important."

Diane has vitreomacular adhesion or VMA.

Nat dr.

"Ok let's see can your take our glasses off."

she'll will be one of the first in the United States-

Nat

"Blink"

to receive the jetrea treatment for VMA.

Sot dr

"It's an adhesion between the gel in the eye and the retina, why some people get it and others don't I don't think we really know."

The adhesion causes pulling in the eye, which can be painful and lead to vision loss.

This drug- is the only option besides surgery to separate the gel and your retina.

Jetera can also be used on patients with holes in their retina.

After numbing agents, it's injected directly into the eye.

Nat

"Dr- that's it.

Diane- that's it?

Dr- can you believe it was that easy?"

Jetrea either works- or it doesn't.

Nat dr

"It may be that you're better within a few days, that's certainly very possible."

The possibilities- go beyond this room.

Sot Diane
